[Efficacy of radiotherapy of cancer of the mouth mucosa].

An analysis of 10-year experience of a radiological department (962 patients) indicated late admission of oral mucosa cancer patients for specialized treatment: 75-85% of the patients were admitted with Stage II-IV disease. The assessment of the efficacy of radiotherapy according to the 3 and 5-year survival rates showed that better results were obtained for buccal mucosa cancer and the worst for mouth fundus cancer. Three-year survival rates could be considered sufficient for the assessment of buccal cancer therapy whereas a 5-year period was necessary for the rest of the cancer sites. Therapeutic results and stage were well correlated; in all the sites the results were worse in patients with Stage III-IV disease. Regional metastases are a poor prognostic sign, particularly fixed metastases in patients with tongue and mouth fundus cancer. Combined therapy turned out to be the most effective in tongue cancer. In different variants of dose delivery in time the most favorable results were obtained with small fractionation (a conventional course). However it should be noted that a split course was usually applied to weak elderly patients with advanced stages of disease.

[Computerized planning of radiotherapy].

The hypophysis was studied by MR tomography in 148 patients with the most prevalent diseases of the hypothalamohypophyseal system and in 13 ones with primary hypothyrosis. The findings evidence a great variety of changes in the MRT picture in the examinees. The method permits a reliable diagnosis of hypophyseal macroadenoma and of an 'empty' sella turcica. Qualitative and quantitative criteria for MRT diagnosis of these conditions are suggested. The diagnostic value of MRT for the detection of macroadenomas is still to be researched. The method was effectively used for a dynamic follow-up of the hypophyseal status in the course of pathogenetic therapy; the formation of an 'empty' sella turcica is possible against the background of dopamine agonist therapy and substitution therapy of primary hypothyrosis.

[Advocating radiotherapy of non-neoplastic diseases].

The authors a sum of the principal proofs, phenomena and facts that confirm the high efficacy of radiotherapy in acute and chronic inflammatory processes, degenerative dystrophic and hyperplastic diseases. The authors analyze the causes responsible for the unjustified rejection of the method in practical medicine and prove its efficacy in therapy of nontumorous diseases.

[Outcomes of radiation therapy for malignant nasal mucosal tumors].

Of 40 patients with malignant nasal mucosal tumors, the number of males and females was the same. Seventy per cent were aged over 60 years. End-stage tumor growth was noted in 80%. Varying differentiation carcinomas were prevalent in 28 of the 40 patients. By and large, radical radiation therapy leads to 3-year recovery in 46% of cases. Taking into account high levels of regional metastases, patients with end-stage tumors (35.7%) were given elective radiation of the areas of regional lymph discharge on ipsilateral side of damage.
