Measurements of n-p correlations in the reaction of relativistic neon with uranium.

We report a preliminary measurement of coincident neutron-proton pairs emitted at 45 degrees in the interaction of 400, 530, and 650 MeV/A neon beams incident on uranium. Charged particles were identified by time of flight and momentum, as determined in a magnetic spectrometer. Neutral particles were detected using a thick plastic scintillator, and their time of flight was measured between an entrance scintillator, triggered by a charged particle, and the neutron detector. The scatter plots and contour plots of neutron momentum vs. proton momentum appear to show a slight correlation ridge above an uncorrelated background. The projections of this plane on the n-p momentum difference axis are essentially flat, showing a one standard deviation enhancement for each of the three beams energies. At each beam energy, the calculated momentum correlation function for the neutron-proton pairs is enhanced near zero neutron-proton momentum difference by approximately one standard deviation over the expected value for no correlation. This enhancement is expected to occur as a consequence of the attractive final state interaction between the neutron and proton (i.e., virtual or "singlet" deuterons). The implications of these measurements are discussed.

[Concentration of cefotiam in the human prostatic tissue and bladder wall].

Cefotiam (CTM) was administered in 31 patients before surgery and the concentration of CTM in serum, extirpated prostatic tissue and bladder wall was measured. Additional studies on pharmacokinetic parameters were carried out. The maximum level of serum concentration, following 1 hour intravenous infusion of 1 g, was 54.0 micrograms/ml after 1 hour and T1/2 was 1.16 hours. The maximum level of prostatic tissue was 19.5 micrograms/g and of bladder wall was 29.9 micrograms/g after 1.2 hours and T1/2 was 1.14 hours for both. An appropriate administration method for single use of CTM in the patient of UTI was discussed and 1 hour infusion of 1 g CTM was suggested.

Effects of the removal of the primary tumor and immunotherapy with Corynebacterium parvum on metastatic tumor proliferation.

The effects of surgical intervention by removal of the primary focus, and the effectiveness of an immunomodulator, Corynebacterium parvum (Cp), on the proliferation of metastatic tumor tissue were investigated by following the postoperative changes in the 3H-thymidine labelling rate of metastatic tissue in an experimental model of metastasis in mice. In addition, the delayed type hypersensitivity reaction (DTH) was studied to investigate the immune capacity of the host. The labelling rate of mice that had the primary focus removed remained high with little variation, while that of the mice not operated on decreased gradually. On the other hand, in mice undergoing a sham operation, the rate was the same as that of the mice with the primary focus removed for a short while, but then gradually decreased. When Cp was administered, especially before removal of the primary focus, the rate was lower than that of the tumor bearing control group and decreased steadily. The number of pulmonary metastatic nodules was increased by removal of the primary focus, but this increase was inhibited by the administration of Cp which prolonged life. The depression in the DTH was less in the group given Cp preoperativeLy than in either the group of mice having the primary focus removed or those not having it removed.

[The effects of surgical intervention and removal of the primary tumor, and the effectiveness of Corynebacterium parvum on metastatic tumor proliferation].

The effects of surgical intervention and removal of the primary tumor, and the effectiveness of Corynebacterium parvum (Cp) on the proliferation of metastatic tumor tissue were investigated by using autoradiography to follow post-operative changes in the 3H-thymidine labelling rate of metastatic tissue in an experimental model of metastasis in mice. In addition, the delayed hypersensitivity reaction and the cytotoxicity (ADCC, NK) of lung cells were studied, to investigate the immune capacity of the host. The effect of surgical intervention on the proliferation of metastatic tumor tissue was only transitory, while removal of the primary tumor caused the continuous proliferation of remnant foci. This indicated that the primary tumor controlled the metastatic proliferation. C. parvum is an effective immunomodulator ; hence, when given before removal of the primary focus, it inhibited the formation and the continuing proliferation of remnant metastatic foci, and maintained the immune capacity of the host.

[Antitumor effect of Corynebacterium parvum on C3H mouse bearing MH-134 tumor].

The antitumor effect of Corynebacterium parvum (C. parvum) was examined by using C3H/He mouse bearing MH-134 ascites hepatoma. The optimal dose of C. parvum was 0.4mg/day intraperitoneally for 5 consecutive days from the 5th day after tumor inoculation. The cell-mediated immunity in this treatment was also investigated by delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) and macrophage migration inhibition activity (MI). According to the results of both DTH and MI, it was assumed that C. parvum yielded an antitumor effect by restoring the cell-mediated immunity of the tumor bearing host.

Clinical observations of juvenile nonprogressive muscular atrophy localized in hand and forearm.

Twenty-seven patients with juvenile nonprogressive muscular atrophy localized in the hand and forearm were analyzed. The clinical characteristics were juvenile male occurrence, insidious onset, specific distribution of localized muscular atrophy and a stationary course. On electromyography, denervation voltage (or giant NMU) is found in the atrophied muscles and sometimes in contralateral nonatrophied ones. Sensory disturbance was not remarkable. Although the etiological factor was not known, strenuous exercise of arms in sports was noted frequently in the history.

Clinical significance of urinary enzymes in diabetic nephropathy.

Urinary enzyme activities (N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase [NAG], alkaline phosphatase [ALP], leucine aminopeptidase [LAP], gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase [gamma-GTP]) were investigated to determine their clinical significance in diabetic nephropathy. There were correlations among ALP, LAP, and gamma-GTP, though no correlation existed between NAG and the other three enzymes. Activities of NAG isozymes (both A and B) were higher than in normal controls. It has been reported that NAG isozyme A might be associated with glomerular diseases, and isozyme B might be associated with proximal tubular damage. The results of our study suggest that NAG reflects lysosomal dysfunction of both glomerular and proximal tubular epithelial cells, which may be caused by poor glycemic control, and that ALP, LAP, and gamma-GTP reflect brush border damage of proximal tubules, which may be caused by diabetic nephropathy.

The characteristics of renal hemodynamics in diabetic spontaneously hypertensive rats in comparison with diabetic Wistar-Kyoto rats.

Diabetic Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats are known to exhibit renal hyperfiltration and hyperperfusion accompanied by renal hypertrophy. We examined whether such characteristics of renal hemodynamics in diabetic SD rats are also observed in diabetic spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. SHR and WKY rats were divided into four groups: D-S, diabetic SHR; N-S, nondiabetic SHR; D-W, diabetic WKY rats; and N-W, nondiabetic WKY rats. Streptozotocin (STZ), 90 mg, was intraperitoneally injected to induce diabetes. Renal blood flow (RBF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were measured by a clearance method with paraaminohypurate and insulin, respectively, 7-12 days after diabetes induction. In D-S and D-W, there was no increase in the kidney weight and RBF, in spite of significant increases in GFR and fasting blood sugar levels. These results indicate that, in both WKY and SHR, diabetes does not always produce renal hypertrophy and does not result in an increase in RBF.

Long-term follow-up of interferon-treated chronic hepatitis C and serum hepatic fibrosis markers.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We investigated the clinical application of serum fibrosis markers in a long-term follow-up of patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with interferon-alpha. METHODOLOGY: This study included 52 patients treated with interferon-alpha (total: 480 MU) for 6 months. They each underwent liver biopsy before and after treatment. Twenty-eight patients who underwent liver biopsy less than 2 years after treatment were classified as group 1, and 24 patients as group 2. The two groups were subdivided into HCV RNA-negative responders and HCV RNA-positive nonresponders. Liver specimens were estimated using grading and staging scores. Serum hyaluronan, PIIIP, and type IV collagen levels were measured before and after treatment. RESULTS: In the responders of groups 1 and 2, grading score after treatment was significantly decreased compared with that before treatment. Staging score after treatment was significantly improved only in the responders of group 2. In the responders of group 2, serum hyaluronan level was significantly decreased compared with that before treatment. In group 2, the grading score was significantly correlated with serum PIIIP and type IV collagen levels, and the staging score was significantly correlated with only serum hyaluronan level. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that the serum PIIIP and type IV collagen levels reflect the activity, and serum hyaluronan reflects the degree of fibrosis in liver specimens of HCV RNA-negative patients in a long-term follow-up of patients after interferon-alpha treatment.
