A porous framework polymer based on a zinc(II) 4,4'-bipyridine-2,6,2',6'-tetracarboxylate: synthesis, structure, and "zeolite-like" behaviors.

The robust metal-organic framework compound {[Zn(2)(L)] x 4H(2)O}(infinity) I has been synthesized by hydrothermal reaction of ZnCl(2) and 4,4'-bipyridine-2,6,2',6'-tetracarboxylic acid (H(4)L). Compound I crystallizes in a chiral space group, P4(2)2(1)2, with the chirality generated by the helical chains of hydrogen-bonded guest water molecules rather than by the coordination framework. Removal of guest water molecules from the crystal affords the porous material, [Zn(2)(L)](infinity) (II), which has very high thermal stability and is chemically inert. The N(2) isotherm of II at 77 K suggests a uniform porous structure with a BET surface area of 312.7 m(2)/g and a remarkably strong interaction with N(2) molecules (betaE(0) = 29.6 kJ mol(-)(1)). II also exhibits significant gas storage capacities of 1.08 wt % for H(2) at 4 bar and 77 K and 3.14 wt % (44.0 cm(3)/g, 67 v/v) for methane at 9 Bar at 298 K. The adsorption behavior of II toward organic solvent vapors has also been studied, and isotherms reveal that for different solvent vapors adsorption is dominated by two types of processes, absorbate-absorbate or absorbate-absorbent interactions. The adsorption and desorption kinetic processes in II are determined mainly by the molecular size of the guest species and their interaction with the host.

Control of copper(I) iodide architectures by ligand design: angular versus linear bridging ligands.

A family of coordination polymers formed by the reaction of copper(I) iodide with a range of angular bidentate or tridentate N-donor ligands is reported. The framework polymers [CuI(dpt)](infinity) 1 [dpt = 2,4-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine], [CuI(dpb)](infinity) 2 [dpb = 1,4-bis-(4-pyridyl)-benzene], [(CuI)3(dpypy)2](infinity) 3, [CuI(dpypy)](infinity) 4 [dpypy = 3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-pyridine], and [Cu3I3(pypm)](infinity) 5 [pypm = 5-(4-pyridyl)pyrimidine] have been prepared and structurally characterized. It was found that the angular nature of the dpypy and dpt ligands favors the formation of discrete (CuI)2 dimeric subunits as observed in [CuI(dpt).MeCN](infinity) 1 and [(CuI)3(dpypy)2](infinity) 3. In contrast, reaction with the linear ligand dpb affords [CuI(dpb)](infinity) 2 which incorporates a one-dimensional (CuI)(infinity) chain structure. Moreover, the additional donor available on the central ring of the dpypy ligand generates a novel two-dimensional bilayer structure in 3, in contrast to the one-dimensional ribbon structure observed in the case of 1. Interestingly, the bilayer structure of 3 additionally exhibits 2-fold interpenetration. The reaction of CuI with dpypy produces not only 3 but a further product [CuI(dpypy)](infinity) 4 that has been characterized as a one-dimensional chain constructed from trigonal-planar Cu(I) centers bridged by bidentate dpypy ligands. Compound 5, [Cu3I3(pypm)](infinity), exhibits a highly unusual three-dimensional structure in which the pypm ligand bridges two-dimensional brick-wall (CuI)(infinity) sheets.

Surface self-assembly of the cyanuric acid-melamine hydrogen bonded network.

A hydrogen-bonded bimolecular network formed between cyanuric acid (CA) and melamine (M), CA x M, has been prepared by a surface-based self-assembly process; the monolayer CA x M network is prepared under ultra-high vacuum conditions either by sequential deposition of CA followed by M, or through simultaneous deposition of the component molecular species.

Structural diversity in two-dimensional coordination polymers constructed from simple building-blocks; a rare example of coordination polymer polymorphs structurally characterised from multiple crystals.

A family of two-dimensional coordination polymers formed from the reaction of Cd(NO(3))(2) with pyrazine or pyrimidine is reported, including rare examples of polymorphic coordination polymers which crystallise as multiple crystals. Six coordination polymers have been structurally characterised, four for pyrazine and two for pyrimidine-based systems, all of which form two-dimensional arrays utilising pyrazine/pyrimidine bridging, in some instances in combination with nitrate bridging. The compounds form either 4(4) grids (1,3,4,5), or in one instance, a 6(3) herringbone sheet structure (2). In the case of 3, two polymorphs have been identified, 3a and 3b, in which the three-dimensional arrangements of the coordination polymers differ only in the relative ordering of adjacent two-dimensional sheets. It was found that these two polymorphs crystallise in a simultaneous fashion such that each crystal studied was found to contain regions of both polymorphs and was believed to be a multiple crystal. Assessment of the phase purity of the product from the reaction of Cd(NO(3))(2) with either pyrazine or pyrimidine indicates that compounds 1and 5 are not formed when the products are formed by rapid precipitation but only when using slow-diffusion methods. It is also apparent that in almost all instances more than one product is formed from a given reaction thereby illustrating the complexity of coordination polymer formation even when using simple building-blocks. For the crystal engineer this complexity is perhaps best illustrated by the simultaneous formation of 3a and 3b where no chemical interactions differentiate the two polymorphs, presenting a seemingly insurmountable complexity in the engineering of these systems.

Water superstructures within organic arrays; hydrogen-bonded water sheets, chains and clusters.

A strategy for encouraging the formation of extended water arrays is presented, in which molecules that contain a 1,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2,3-dione core are used as supramolecular hosts for the accommodation of guest water molecules and arrays. These molecules were selected as they contain a hydrophilic oxalamide-based "terminus" that allows water molecules to hydrogen-bond to the host organic molecules as well as to each other. The host molecules also contain a hydrophobic "end" based upon an aromatic ring, which serves to encourage the formation of discrete water clusters in preference to three-dimensional networks, as the water molecules cannot form strong hydrogen bonds with this part of the molecule. A systematic study of several hydrated structures of four organic molecules based on 1,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (qd) is discussed. The organic molecules, qd, 6-methyl-1,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (mqd), 6,7-dimethyl-1,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (dmqd) and 1,4-dihydrobenzo[g]quinoxaline-2,3-dione (Phqd), act as supramolecular crystal hosts for the clusters of water, with zero-, one- and two-dimensional arrays of water being observed. The hydrogen bonding in the structures, both within the water clusters and between the clusters and organic molecules, is examined. In particular, the structure of dmqd6 H2O contains a two-dimensional water sheet composed of pentagonal and octagonal units. Phqd3 H2O forms a hydrophilic extended structure encouraging the formation of one-dimensional chains consisting entirely of water. Both qd2 H2O and dmqd2 H2O can be considered to form one-dimensional chains, but only by utilising bridging carbonyl groups of the oxalamide moieties to form the extended array; if only the water is considered, zero-dimensional water tetramers are observed. The remaining hydrated structures, [Na+dmqd-]dmqdH2O, dmqd1/3H2O and mqd1/2H2O, all contain discrete water molecules but do not form extended water structures.

Anion control over interpenetration and framework topology in coordination networks based on homoleptic six-connected scandium nodes.

Reaction of ScX3 (X=NO3-, CF3SO3-, ClO4-) with 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide (L) affords topologically distinct six-connected three-dimensional coordination frameworks, {[Sc(L)3](NO3)3}(infinity) (1), {[Sc(L)3](CF3)SO3)3(CH3OH)2.7(H2O)3}(infinity) (2), {[Sc(L)3](ClO4)3}(infinity) (3) and {[Sc(L)4(H2O)2](ClO4)3}(infinity) (4). Compounds 1, 2 and 3 are networks based on octahedrally co-ordinated ScO6 centres bound through six oxygen atoms from six separate N-oxide ligands L. Compounds 1 and 3 are doubly interpenetrated and have alpha-polonium-type structures of 4(12)6(3) topology based upon three intersecting (4,4) nets. The structure of 2 is unusual and shows parallel, co-planar layers of (4,4) nets connected in a criss-crossed fashion to afford a new 4(8)6(6)8 topology. In 4 only four ligands L bind to each Sc(III) centre with two additional water molecules bridging metal nodes. Significantly, the bridges formed by L do not sit in a plane and if connections through L are considered alone the resultant structure is a diamondoid array typically based upon a tetrahedral connecting node at Sc. Five interpenetrating diamondoid networks are observed that are cross-bridged by water molecules to form a single three-dimensional array of 4(8)6(7) topology. Compound 4 can also be viewed as incorporating two intersecting (4,4) grids based upon two ligands L and two bridging waters. Thus, variation of anion, solvent and conditions critically affects the structures of products formed, and the series of polymers reported herein illustrates how tectons based upon (4,4) grids can be combined and distorted to form non-NaCl topologies and even cross-bridged, multiply interpenetrated diamondoid materials. Both compounds 2 and 4 represent unusual examples of self-penetrated coordination frameworks.

New approaches to the analysis of high connectivity materials: design frameworks based upon 4(4)- and 6(3)-subnet tectons.

Coordination framework polymers derived from lanthanide metal ions with N,N'-dioxide ligands (4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide, pyrazine-N,N'-dioxide, 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)ethane-N,N'-dioxide, trans-1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)ethene-N,N'-dioxide) exhibit such intricate architectures that a new strategy is required to appreciate and understand their structures. Rather than analyzing the overall structure in terms of the connectivity of individual metal nodes, which can lead in some cases to extremely complex topological treatments, our new strategy is based on the visualization of the structures as combinations of interconnected layered 2-D sheets or subnet tectons. Despite the diversity and relative complexities of many of the structures discussed here, they can all be described by the interconnection of just two types of 2-D subnet tectons, 4(4) square grids or 6(3) hexagonal grids. The interconnection of these layered sheets with bridging N,N'-dioxide molecules gives rise to both 2-D bilayer and 3-D network extended structures depending upon the relative dispositions of the interconnecting N,N'-dioxide ligands. Thus, 2-D bilayers result when the N,N'-dioxide ligands that bridge two subnet tectons are located on the same side of the sheet, while 3-D networks are formed when the bridging N,N'-dioxide ligands are located on both sides of the sheet. This analysis allows ready identification and interpretation of some of the most highly connected and complex architectures yet observed in materials chemistry.

Controlling molecular deposition and layer structure with supramolecular surface assemblies.

Selective non-covalent interactions have been widely exploited in solution-based chemistry to direct the assembly of molecules into nanometre-sized functional structures such as capsules, switches and prototype machines. More recently, the concepts of supramolecular organization have also been applied to two-dimensional assemblies on surfaces stabilized by hydrogen bonding, dipolar coupling or metal co-ordination. Structures realized to date include isolated rows, clusters and extended networks, as well as more complex multi-component arrangements. Another approach to controlling surface structures uses adsorbed molecular monolayers to create preferential binding sites that accommodate individual target molecules. Here we combine these approaches, by using hydrogen bonding to guide the assembly of two types of molecules into a two-dimensional open honeycomb network that then controls and templates new surface phases formed by subsequently deposited fullerene molecules. We find that the open network acts as a two-dimensional array of large pores of sufficient capacity to accommodate several large guest molecules, with the network itself also serving as a template for the formation of a fullerene layer.

Stereoselective association of binuclear metallacycles in coordination polymers.

A series of structurally related binuclear metallacycles [Cd(NO(3))(2)L](2), where L is an angular exo-bidentate ligand, have been synthesized. Each metallacycle contains two coordinatively unsaturated, chiral metal centers within a single molecule, and the assembly of these metallacycles into polymeric framework structures has been studied systematically for the first time. Stereoselective homochiral association of [Cd(NO(3))(2)L](2) leads to the formation of helical coordination polymers, whereas meso type association results in nonhelical chain structures. The type of stereoselective aggregation depends on the conditions of self-assembly as well as on ligand functionality. Both helical and nonhelical polymeric complexes have been isolated for the metallacycle [Cd(NO(3))(2)(2,4'-pyacph)](2) (2,4'-pyacph = 2,4'-(4-ethynylphenyl)bipyridyl). Homochiral association results in the formation of helical [Cd(NO(3))]( infinity ) chains which link the binuclear [Cd(NO(3))(2)(2,4'-pyacph)](2) metallacycles into racemic two-dimensional sheets which contain both P and M [Cd(NO(3))]( infinity ) helices. In contrast, meso-association leads to the formation of nonhelical one-dimensional chains. It is shown that the product of homochiral association is predominately formed at room temperature and that of meso-association is generated at elevated temperatures. Thus, it may be concluded that the homochiral association appears to be energetically less favorable than the meso-association, a conclusion that has been confirmed by theoretical calculations of the crystal lattice energy. Several high-yield syntheses of bipyridyl-type ligands used for metallacyclic assembly are also reported.
