[Liver tumors induced in mice by prenatal and postnatal administration of ortho-aminoazotoluene].

The authors studied the prenatal and postnatal blastomogenic action of orthoaminoazotoluol (OAAT) on the liver of CBA mice. OAAT was administered to mice intragastrically in oil solution, thrice, 4 mg each time (a total of 12 mg). Twelve months after the OAAT administration tumours of the liver during the postnatal period were revealed in 89.3% of female mice (11.5% in control), and in 78.7% of male mice (68.5% in control). In the experimental progeny subjected to OAA action during last 4--5 days of the prenatal period the liver tumours appeared in females at the age of 12 months in 54.8% of cases (5.3% in control), and in males--in 81.1% (35.2% in control). In this progeny, particularly in the male animals malignant neoplasms occurred more frequently than in the intact animals and those subjected to the action of OAAT during the postnatal period.

[Transplancental effect of ortho-aminoazotoluene on organ cultures of embryonal liver from mouse lines C57BL and CBA].

Transplacental influence of ortho-aminoazotoluol (OAAT) on the organ cultures of embryonal liver of highly-hepatomous mice CBA, and low-cancerous mice C57BL was the subject of this research. Transplacental influence of 12 mg OAAT caused an increase of embryonal liver organ cultures viability. Under the transplacental influence of 24 mg OAAT on CBA mice the toxic effect noted at the early cultivation period was replaced by the 20-25th cultivation days by the growth-stimulating effect. The results of in vivo experiments corresponded to the results of in vitro observations.

[Transplacental and immediate effect of ortho-aminoazotoluol on organ cultures of embryonal mouse liver].

A study was made of the transplacental and direct action of orthoaminoazotoluol (OAAT) in the organ cultures of the embryonic liver of mice of a highly hepatomic CBA line. In direct action in vitro OAAT caused a marked reduction of survival of the organ cultures of the embryonic liver in comparison with control. In the transplacental action of OAAT the toxic effect was replaced at the last periods of cultivation by the growth stimulating one; the percentage of live experimental cultures increased by 30 in comparison with control.

[Interstrain differences in the the behavior of mice selected for greater and lesser brain mass].

The capability for extrapolation of movement direction of stimuli and learning ability in T-maze were studied in F15-F18 mice generations, selected for large (LB) and small (SB) brain weight. There were no significant or stable differences between strains in capacity for extrapolation. Learning ability was higher in mice of the LB strain. In these mice, the behavioral asymmetry (the tendency to move to the right) was observed during performance of both extrapolation and T-maze tasks. Since such an asymmetry was absent in mice of initial heterogeneous population, we think that the observed phenomenon may be a concomitant result of brain weight selection. The described strains present a model for studying the functional relationships between brain weight and behavior.

[The comparison of levels of anxiety and stress response in mice selected for low and high brain weight].

Emotionality, anxiety and stress reactivity were studied in mice selected for large (LW) and small (SW) brain weight. The open-field test, startle reaction, cross-maze, tail suspension and slippery funnel tests were used. It was shown that the SW mice are more active in the open field, more anxious and predisposed to the stereotyped behavior and passive reactions in stress situations. The relationship between the studied traits and brain weight and their influence on cognitive behavior are discussed.

[Disordered differentiation of mouse embryonic lungs in organ cultures under the action of nitrosomethylurea].

We have studied the effect of nitrosomethylurea (NMU) on differentiation of early rudiments of mouse embryonic lungs (12th day of embryogenesis) explanted into an organ culture. We have demonstrated that nontoxic doses of NMU are capable of accelerating normal lung differentiation both at the early (increase in the number of epithelial buds) and at the late (increase in the number of explants with regions of well-developed alveoli) stages of cultivation. However, NMU induces disturbances of differentiation, which appear as polycystic structures and hyperplastic nodules generally absent in the control.

[The rehabilitative treatment of patients following stomach resection for peptic ulcer].

The paper presents the results of the examination and treatment of 59 and 44 patients subjected to gastric resection for gastroduodenal ulcer early and late after the surgery, respectively. Special courses of aftertreatment are suggested. Electrophoresis of Karachi [correction of Karachinskaya] mud-water solution was explored as a component of the treatment.

[Variability in the morphofunctional differentiation of the CNS in a heterogeneous population of laboratory mice].

The psychomotor maturation rate was studied in a heterogeneous stock of laboratory mice. Mean ages of several innate reflexes formation were compared for two groups of animals which represented extreme variants of brain weight phenotypes when adult. Mice with measured brain weights, by least 0.67 standard deviation higher (H) or lower (L) than the average for the whole population, reveal substantially different psychomotor development, the H-group appearing to be more advanced. This observation is at variance with those obtained using the lines of laboratory mice selectively bred for high and low brain weight. The apparent inconsistency of the two experiments may reflect the relative dominance of environmental (heterogeneous stock) or genetic (selected lines) factors, as well as occasional fixing of certain alleles in process of selection.

[Development of certain innate reflex reactions in mice selected for brain weight].

The rates of functional differentiation of the CNS were studied in mice, selected for high (H-line), and low (L-line) brain weight. Four tests were used, based on most distinct reflex responses. Comparison of ages of responses accomplishment in all the tests indicates that mice from L-line meet the test criteria on average 0.5 day earlier than those from H-line. The obtained data suggest that the low adult brain weight in L-line originates from genetically controlled early CNS maturation.
