Benign diseases of the anus, rectum, and colon are common and in most instances simple to treat. However, there may be complications that are considered serious. The authors present examples of these diseases and emphasize pathological anatomy and practical surgical therapy.
A ten-year experience with 12 cases of spontaneously occurring, preoperatively diagnosed coloenteric fistulas is described. Accurate diagnosis can be achieved most often by barium-enema examination. One-stage resection with primary anastomosis, to restore gastronintestinal continuity, is highly successful, and should be the procedure of choice.
