Identification of expressed genes characterizing long-term survival in malignant glioma patients.

Better understanding of the underlying biology of malignant gliomas is critical for the development of early detection strategies and new therapeutics. This study aimed to define genes associated with survival. We investigated whether genes coupled with a class prediction model could be used to define subgroups of high-grade gliomas in a more objective manner than standard pathology. RNAs from 29 malignant gliomas were analysed using Agilent microarrays. We identified 21 genes whose expression was most strongly and consistently related to patient survival based on univariate proportional hazards models. In six out of 10 genes, changes in gene expression were validated by quantitative real-time PCR. After adjusting for clinical covariates based on a multivariate analysis, we finally obtained a statistical significance level for DDR1 (discoidin domain receptor family, member 1), DYRK3 (dual-specificity tyrosine-(Y)-phosphorylation-regulated kinase 3) and KSP37 (Ksp37 protein). In independent samples, it was confirmed that DDR1 protein expression was also correlated to the prognosis of glioma patients detected by immunohistochemical staining. Furthermore, we analysed the efficacy of the short interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated inhibition of DDR1 mRNA synthesis in glioma cell lines. Cell proliferation and invasion were significantly suppressed by siRNA against DDR1. Thus, DDR1 can be a novel molecular target of therapy as well as an important predictive marker for survival in patients with glioma. Our method was effective at classifying high-grade gliomas objectively, and provided a more accurate predictor of prognosis than histological grading.

Diagnosis of bone metastasis in men with prostate cancer by measurement of serum ICTP in combination with alkali phosphatase and prostate-specific antigen.

AIMS: Carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) is a parameter of bone absorption, and has recently been introduced to monitor bone metastases. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the potential of ICTP as a candidate serum marker of bone metastasis in prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum markers in 155 men pathologically diagnosed with prostate cancer were measured. The serum levels of ICTP, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and alkali phosphatase (ALP) were compared to assess the extent of disease (EOD) scores from bone scans and then analysed statistically. RESULTS: The serum ICTP levels were not well correlated with the EOD scores in the total group of men, men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, or men previously diagnosed with prostate cancer who were followed up. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of ICTP (cut-off value, 5.0 ng/ ml) of the men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer were 78.6%, 88.0%, 78.6%, and 88.0%, respectively. In these men, the specificity and PPV of ALP (cut-off value, 335 IU/l) were 100%, whereas the sensitivity and NPV of PSA (cut-off value, 40 ng/ml) were 100% in this study. The serum levels of ICTP in the men with low ALP (< 335 IU/l) and high PSA (> or = 40 ng/ ml) clearly separated the men with or without bone metastasis, as judged by bone scans. CONCLUSION: We found that the ICTP is not a superior serum marker for bone metastases compared with ALP or PSA. Our study suggests, however, that the ICTP measurement is useful in a certain subset of men with the combination of PSA and ALP in distinguishing men with bone metastasis from those without.

Association of HLA-DRB1*0901-DQB1*0303 haplotype with microscopic polyangiitis in Japanese.

Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is a rare and severe form of systemic necrotizing vasculitis associated with myeloperoxidase (MPO)-specific antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA). We previously reported significant association of HLA-DRB1*0901 with MPA. To define the susceptibility loci within the HLA region, we determined the genotypes of HLA-DQB1, DPB1, B and C in 50 patients with MPA and 77 unrelated Japanese controls. In addition to HLA-DRB1*0901, significant association of DQB1*0303 (allele carrier frequencies 50% in MPA, 29.9% in controls, odds ratio 2.35, P = 0.017) was detected. These alleles were in strong linkage disequilibrium (D' = 0.95, r2 = 0.82). Increased frequency was also observed for DPB1*0201, B*15111 and Cw*0303, which was at least partly accounted for by linkage disequilibrium with DRB1*0901 and DQB1*0303. These results indicate that DRB1*0901-DQB1*0303 haplotype represents the primary genetic risk for MPA within the HLA region in Japanese, and provides the basis that future functional studies on the role of HLA in MPA should target DR9, DQ9 and DR53 proteins encoded by this haplotype.

Impact of CYP3A5 and MDR1(ABCB1) C3435T polymorphisms on the pharmacokinetics of tacrolimus in renal transplant recipients.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of CYP3A5 and MDR1 genetic polymorphisms on tacrolimus pharmacokinetics in Japanese renal transplant recipients. METHOD: The pharmacokinetic parameters of tacrolimus were calculated in steady-state on day 28 after transplantation. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and direct sequence methods were used for CYP3A5 and MDR1 polymorphisms, respectively. RESULTS: The dose-adjusted area under the concentration-time curve (AUC0-12) was significantly lower among CYP3A5*1 carriers than those bearing CYP3A5*3/*3. (0.570 +/- 0.105 vs 0.865 +/- 0.343 ng.h/mL per mg/kg, P = .00322). The daily tacrolimus dose per body weight was significantly higher in CYP3A5*1 carriers than those of CYP3A5*3/*3 carriers (0.271 +/- 0.110 vs 0.150 +/- 0.056 mg/kg, P = .00016). In this study, a distinction was made between carriers of CYP3A5*1/*1+*1/*3 and CYP3A5*3/*3 to investigate the influence of the MDR1 C3435T mutation on tacrolimus pharmacokinetics. The MDR1 C3435T polymorphisms did not affect any tacrolimus pharmacokinetic parameter in either group. CONCLUSIONS: Renal transplant recipients who were CYP3A5*1 carriers required a higher dose of tacrolimus than CYP3A5*3/*3, indicating a significantly lower dose-adjusted AUC0-12 of tacrolimus. In contrast, MDR1 C3435T polymorphism was not an important factor in tacrolimus pharmacokinetics.

Incidence and risk factors of clinical characteristics, tacrolimus pharmacokinetics, and related genomic polymorphisms for posttransplant diabetes mellitus in the early stage of renal transplant recipients.

PURPOSE: Posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is an important complication in a tacrolimus (TAC)-based immunosuppressive regimen. The present study investigated the incidence, clinical risk factors, TAC pharmacokinetics (PK), and genomic polymorphisms related to TAC-PK or diabetes mellitus (DM) under the TAC-based immunosuppressive protocol. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-one nondiabetic renal allograft recipients transplanted from February 1998 to March 2004 were studied. Patients with over 6.5 mg/dL of hemoglobin A1c on sequential blood samples or requiring insulin or oral antidiabetic agents around 6 months after transplantation were diagnosed as having PTDM. RESULTS: Six months after transplantation, 10 recipients (14.1%) developed PTDM. The positive risk factors were age (P = .003) and body mass index (P = .035). There were no significant differences in gender distribution, pretransplant dialysis period, dialysis modality, acute rejection rate, total steroid doses, TAC-PK, or its related genomic polymorphisms between the two groups. In the DM-related polymorphisms, the frequency of PTDM was significant higher in patients with the VDR TaqI tt or Tt genotype than in those with the TT genotype (P = .013). After a multivariate analysis, age over 50 years (P = .007, odds ratio 8.92) and the presence of VDR TaqI t allele (P = .043, odds ratio 6.71) were correlated with the development of PTDM. CONCLUSION: The incidence of PTDM in our series was 14.1%. Age over 50 years was a risk factor. The presence of VDR TaqI t allele might be a risk for PTDM. An association between TAC-PK and development of PTDM was not observed.

The influence of mycophenolate mofetil versus azathioprine and mycophenolic acid pharmacokinetics on the incidence of acute rejection and infectious complications after renal transplantation.

PURPOSE: The present retrospective study investigated the influence of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) instead of azathioprine (AZA) as part of tacrolimus-based immunosuppression. Mycophenolic acid (MPA) pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters were used for associations with the incidence of acute rejection (AR) episodes and infectious complications after renal transplantation. METHODS: The 66 consecutive renal transplant recipients reported herein excluded ABO-incompatible transplants or cytomegalovirus (CMV)-seronegative recipients. The immunosuppressive regimen consisted of tacrolimus, steroids, and AZA 1-2 mg/kg/d in 22 patients (between February 1998 and December 2000) or MMF 2 g/d in 44 patients (since January 2001). CMV infection was defined as positive CMV-antigenemia. MPA PK was studied on day 28 after transplantation in 21 recipients. RESULTS: AR occurred in 13.6% of patients in the MMF group compared with 18.2% in the AZA group. The viral infection (CMV, varicella zoster virus, adenovirus hemorrhagic cystitis, and malignancy related to Epstein-Barr [EB] virus) rate was 22.7% in the MMF group and 0% in the AZA group (P = .015). There were no bacterial or fungal infections observed in the 2 groups. MMF dose per body weight was significantly lower among patients with AR than those without AR (25.1 vs 35.6 mg/kg; P = .026). There were no differences in MPA PK parameters between patients with and without viral infections. CONCLUSIONS: Patients treated with MMF required less treatment for AR, however, there were no significant differences. MMF dose per body weight may play an important role in the occurrence of AR. Although virus infections occurred in recipients treated with MMF, MPA PK did not influence the infectious complications after renal transplantation.

Effect of hypercapnia on arterial hypotension after induction of anaesthesia.

We evaluated the effectiveness of intentional hypercapnia against hypotension after induction of anaesthesia with thiopental and isoflurane (TI) or propofol (P). For each group, 24 patients were anaesthetized with thiopental 4 mg kg(-1) (TI) or propofol 2 mg kg(-1) (P) for tracheal intubation and then lightly anaesthetized with isoflurane at 0.6% end-expiratory concentration (TI) or by 6 mg kg(-1) h(-1) infusion of propofol (P). In both anaesthesia groups, patients were randomly assigned to either normocapnia (end-tidal CO(2) = 35 mmHg) or hypercapnia (end-tidal CO(2) = 45 mmHg), which were achieved through adjusting the tidal volume. Systolic arterial pressure (SAP) 15 min after intubation was compared with the preanaesthetic baseline value. Under normocapnia, both TI and P induced a comparable, statistically significant suppression of SAP by approximately 20 mmHg from baseline. Hypercapnia prevented the decrease in SAP in TI but not in P. No patient in the TI-hypercapnia group experienced SAP below 100 mmHg, unlike those in the other groups. In conclusion, mild hypercapnia was effective in the prevention of hypotension in patients receiving thiopental followed by 0.6% end-expiratory isoflurane, but not in patients receiving 6 mg kg(-1) h(-1) propofol.

Serum sex steroid hormone levels and polymorphisms of CYP17 and SRD5A2: implication for prostate cancer risk.

Polymorphism of the steroid hormone-related genes might affect life-long androgen exposure, thus altering a risk of prostate cancer incidence. To evaluate the effect of the polymorphisms of CYP17 and SRD5A2 on serum steroid hormone levels, the 164 male Japanese cohort were tested for serum hormone levels and the genotype of the polymorphisms of CYP17 (T-C base substitution in the promoter region) and SRD5A2 (V89L). The linear trends across the CYP17 genotypes in serum-free testosterone and androstenedione levels were found, suggesting the importance of the polymorphism of CYP17 in determining the circulating androgen levels.

Association of Fcgamma receptor IIb polymorphism with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus in Chinese: a common susceptibility gene in the Asian populations.

The association of Fcgamma receptor (FcgammaR) polymorphisms with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been demonstrated in various populations; however, the results have been inconsistent. We recently identified a single-nucleotide polymorphism encoding a non-synonymous substitution, Ile232Thr (I232T), of FCGR2B and its association with SLE in Japanese and in Thais. Multiple functional FcgammaR genes with polymorphisms (FCGR2A, FCGR2B, FCGR3A, and FCGR3B) cluster in 1q23, and some of them are in linkage disequilibrium (LD). To differentiate contributions from multiple-linked loci, comparison of different populations may provide useful information. In this study, we analyzed the above four FCGR polymorphisms of the Chinese patients and controls for the association with SLE. FCGR2A-H131R, FCGR2B-I232T, FCGR3A-F176V, and FCGR3B genotypes were determined in 167 Chinese patients with SLE and 129 healthy controls. Association was examined using case-control analysis. Allele frequencies of FCGR2B-232T and FCGR3A-176F were significantly increased in SLE [odds ratio (OR) = 1.67 and OR = 1.41, respectively]. Interestingly, while these alleles had a tendency of positive LD in the controls, FCGR2B-232T was in positive association with FCGR3A-176V in SLE, suggesting that these two alleles were associated with SLE in an independent manner. Comparison between SLE with and without nephritis indicated significant association of FCGR2B-232T with nephritis (OR = 2.65). When the present results were combined with our previous data on the Japanese and the Thais using meta-analytic methods, highly significant and independent association was observed for FCGR2B and FCGR3A genotypes. These results strongly suggested that FCGR2B is a common susceptibility factor to SLE in the Asians.

Changes in plasma ghrelin and growth hormone concentrations in mature Holstein cows and three-month-old calves.

We measured changes in plasma ghrelin and GH concentrations in mature Holstein cows and 3-mo-old female Holstein calves fed at scheduled times. Our objective was to determine the characteristics of ghrelin secretion in dairy cattle and its influence on GH. Animals were fed at 0800 and 1600 for 2 wk before and during experiments. Plasma was sampled for 24 h at 2-h intervals in Exp. 1. In mature cows, plasma ghrelin concentrations decreased (P < 0.01) just after 0800 but not at the 1600 feeding. Ghrelin concentrations were lower (P < 0.01) in calves than in mature cows and they did not decrease after feeding in calves. The temporal relationship between ghrelin and GH remained unclear. In Exp. 2, plasma was sampled 2 h before and after both morning and evening feedings at 20-min intervals. Plasma ghrelin concentrations decreased (P < 0.05) 40 min after 0800 feeding and 60 min after 1600 feeding in mature cows. These results indicate that in mature cows, plasma ghrelin concentration decreased after feeding, but this decrease was not evident in 3-mo-old calves. Further studies are required to define the relationship between plasma ghrelin and GH concentrations.

Vaccination of recurrent glioma patients with tumour lysate-pulsed dendritic cells elicits immune responses: results of a clinical phase I/II trial.

In this Phase I/II trial, the patient's peripheral blood dendritic cells were pulsed with an autologous tumour lysate of the glioma. Seven patients with glioblastoma and three patients with anaplastic glioma, ranging in age from 20 to 69 years, participated in this study. The mean numbers of vaccinations of tumour lysate-pulsed dendritic cells were 3.7 times intradermally close to a cervical lymph node, and 3.2 times intratumorally via an Ommaya reservoir. The percentage of CD56-positive cells in the peripheral blood lymphocytes increased after immunisation. There were two minor responses and four no-change cases evaluated by radiological findings. Dendritic cell vaccination elicited T-cell-mediated antitumour activity, as evaluated by the ELISPOT assay after vaccination in two of five tested patients. Three patients showed delayed-type hypersensitivity reactivity to the autologous tumour lysate, two of these had a minor clinical response, and two had an increased ELISPOT result. Intratumoral CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell infiltration was detected in two patients who underwent reoperation after vaccination. This study demonstrated the safety and antitumour effects of autologous tumour lysate-pulsed dendritic cell therapy for patients with malignant glioma.

Association of Fcgamma receptor IIb and IIIb polymorphisms with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus in Thais.

We recently reported association of a newly identified polymorphism of Fcgamma receptor (FcgammaR) IIb, I232T, with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Japanese. To date, information on FcgammaR genotypes and their association with SLE is limited in South-east Asian populations. To gain further insight into the role of FcgammaR polymorphisms in the genetic predisposition of SLE, association of FcgammaRIIa-H131R, IIb-I232T, IIIa-F176V and IIIb-NA1/NA2 (HNA-1a/1b) polymorphisms with SLE was analyzed in the Thai population, using case-control association analysis. FcgammaRIIb-232T/T and IIIb-NA2/NA2 genotypes were associated with SLE with the odds ratio of 2.55. Genotype relative risk analysis revealed significant association of IIb-232T/T and IIIb-NA2/NA2, and a tendency of association of the IIIa-176F/F genotype. Moreover, carriers of FcgammaRIIa-131R were significantly increased in patients with lupus nephritis. Significant linkage disequilibrium was present among FcgammaRIIb, IIIa and IIIb, and two-locus analyses suggested that the tendency of association of FcgammaRIIIa could derive from linkage disequilibrium with IIb and IIIb. These results provided evidence that FcgammaR polymorphisms may be an important predisposing factor also in Thais in a complex manner.

Variations of human killer cell lectin-like receptors: common occurrence of NKG2-C deletion in the general population.

CD94 and NKG2 are members of the NK cell receptor families, and are encoded in the natural killer gene complex (NKC) on human chromosome 12p12-13, one of the candidate chromosomal regions for rheumatic diseases. To examine a possible association between variations in CD94 and NKG2 genes and genetic susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), we carried out a systematic polymorphism screening of NKG2-A (KLRC1), NKG2-C (KLRC2) and CD94 (KLRD1) genes on a population basis. In NKG2-A, previously considered to be highly conserved, 10 polymorphisms in the noncoding region and introns, as well as one rare variation leading to an amino acid substitution within the transmembrane region, c.238T>A (Cys80Ser), were detected. In NKG2-C, in addition to the previously described two nonsynonymous substitutions, c.5G>A (Ser2Asn) and c.305C>T (Ser102Phe), two polymorphisms were newly detected in the noncoding region. In CD94, only one single nucleotide substitution was identified in the 5' untranslated region. When the patients and healthy individuals were genotyped for these variations, no significant association was observed. However, although statistically not significant, NKG2-A c.238T>A (Cys80Ser) was observed in three patients with RA, but in none of the healthy individuals and the patients with SLE. Unexpectedly, in the process of polymorphism screening, we identified homozygous deletion of NKG2-C in approximately 4.3% of healthy donors; under the assumption of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, the allele frequency of NKG2-C deletion was estimated to be 20.7%. These results demonstrated that, although human NKG2-A, -C and CD94 are generally conserved with respect to amino acid sequences, NKG2-A is polymorphic in the noncoding region, and that the number of genes encoded in the human NKC is variable among individuals, as previously shown for the leukocyte receptor complex (LRC), HLA and Fcgamma receptor (FCGR) regions.

Rectosigmoidal bladder utilizing an intussuscepted ileal segment: a surgical technique for urinary diversion.

A novel technique of urinary diversion was designed by interposition of an intussuscepted ileal segment between the ureters and the rectosigmoidal pouch, thus preventing ureteral reflux as well as stenosis at the uretero-enteric anastomosis, possible occurrence of urocolonic carcinoma, and frequent evacuation or incontinence. Since all the procedures were limited to the lower abdominal cavity, the surgical invasiveness was compatible with that of an ileal conduit. Our early experience in 15 patients showed that this technique can be considered for those in whom the urethra is not available.

Total cystoprostatectomy in the treatment of locally advanced prostate carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Locally advanced prostate carcinoma frequently causes lower urinary tract symptoms and is a clinical challenge when radiation and/or hormone therapy fail. We investigated whether cystoprostatectomy with urinary diversion benefits patients with locally advanced prostate carcinoma in terms of quality of life and prognostic outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1989 and 2001, we performed 15 cystoprostatectomies for stage C-D1 prostate carcinoma with bladder neck involvement. Of these patients, 5 underwent ileal conduit, 8 rectal bladder, 1 Koch pouch, and 1 ureterocutaneostomy. All the patients received neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant hormonal therapy. In the same period, 28 patients underwent retropubic prostatectomies and 15 patients received hormone therapy alone for stage C-Dl disease. These patients were included as references. RESULTS: Lower urinary tract symptoms caused by bladder involvement were controlled well until the end of follow-up for all the patients in the cystoprostatectomy group. There was no statistically significant difference in QOL score assessed with the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire between the prostatectomy group and the cystoprostatectomy group, while that in the hormone therapy group was lower than those in the surgery groups. There was no statistically significant difference in 5-year PSA-relapse-free survival among cystoprostatectomy, prostatectomy, and hormone therapy groups. Patients in the hormone therapy group died earlier than those in the prostatectomy group (p = 0.02), while those in the cystoprostatectomy group did not. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that total cystoprostatectomy with urinary diversion is a valid option, in terms of disease control and QOL, for prostate cancer patients whose tumor is infiltrating into the bladder.

Association of HLA-DRB1*1502-DQB1*0501 haplotype with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus in Thais.

In this study, we investigated the association of HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 with Thai patients with SLE. A highly significant increase in the frequency of DRB1*1502 and DQB1*0501 was found in SLE patients compared with normal controls. DRB1*1501 and DRB1*1602 were also slightly increased. In contrast, DRB1*1202 and DQB1*0301 were decreased, and DRB1*0406 and DRB1*1401 were not found in the patients' group. The haplotype analysis revealed that DRB1*1502 - DQB1*0501 was most strongly associated with SLE, and also suggested a primary role for DRB1 rather than DQB1. Taken together with the previous report which demonstrated the association of the same haplotype in Taiwan, our present observations strongly suggested that DRB1*1502 - DQB1*0501 is the major HLA haplotype that confers susceptibility to SLE in the South-east Asian populations.

Association of HLA-A*3303-B*4403-DRB1*1302 haplotype, but not of TNFA promoter and NKp30 polymorphism, with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) in the Japanese population.

Herpes zoster is a common disease caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV). In a small number of herpes zoster patients, pain persists beyond 4 weeks or more after healing of vesicular eruptions; this condition is termed postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Positive associations of human histocompatibility leukocyte antigens (HLA) class I antigens, A33 and B44, with PHN in the Japanese population have been reported. Our hypothesis is that susceptibility genes to PHN might exist in the HLA region and the study objective is to further examine possible associations of genes in HLA class I, II and III regions, HLA-A, -B, -DRB1, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFA) promoter, and a natural killer cell activating receptor, NKp30 polymorphisms with PHN. Although TNFA or NKp30 in the class III region had been considered as a candidate locus, we found no associations of TNFA promoter or NKp30 polymorphisms with PHN in this study. We demonstrated that HLA-A*3303, -B*4403 and -DRB1*1302 alleles were significantly associated with PHN (P = 0.0007 for A*3303, P = 0.001 for B*4403 and P = 0.001 for DRB1*1302). The frequency of the HLA-A*3303-B*4403-DRB1*1302 haplotype was also significantly higher in the PHN patients than in the healthy controls (P = 0.0039). Our results suggest that this haplotype might be related to the pathogenesis of PHN.

Polymorphisms of human CD19 gene: possible association with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus in Japanese.

CD19 regulates the signaling for B lymphocyte development, activation and proliferation. In mice, CD19 deficiency and overexpression were shown to result in hypogammaglobulinemia and autoantibody production, respectively. In the present study, we screened for the polymorphisms of CD19, and examined the detected polymorphisms for the association with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Crohn's disease and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Two SNPs, c.705G>T (P235P and IVS14-30C>T, were decreased (P = 0.0096 and P = 0.028, respectively), in SLE. A GT repeat polymorphism, c.*132(GT)(12-18), was detected within the 3'-untranslated region, and individuals with > or =15 times repeat was significantly increased in the independent two groups of Japanese SLE patients (P = 0.011 and P = 0.035, respectively); the overall difference between total SLE and controls was striking (P = 0.0061). No association was observed for RA and Crohn's disease. In addition, no variations other than the common polymorphisms were detected in four patients with common variable immunodeficiency, the phenotype of which resembles CD19 deficient mice. In Caucasian SLE families, this GT repeat polymorphism was rare. CD19 mRNA level in the isolated peripheral blood B lymphocytes was lower in individuals possessing (GT)(15-18) alleles compared with those without these alleles, both in controls and in SLE patients; however, the difference did not reach statistical significance. These results suggested that either the slight reduction in the CD19 mRNA level associated with the elongation of GT repeat, or an allele of another locus in linkage disequilibrium with CD19 (GT)(15-18), may be associated with susceptibility to SLE in Japanese.
