Accumulation of 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate was observed in liver metastasis resulting from stomach carcinoma. This accumulation was located around the lesion on an emission-computed tomogram. This has not been previously reported.
It has been reported that the tentorial confluence sign and/or hockey stick pattern on static imaging are useful in evaluating posterior cerebral artery (PCA) infarctions. In 16 cases with PCA infarction, the tentorial confluence sign was found in all cases, but a hockey stick pattern was seen in only half of these patients. The abnormal accumulations may be classified into three types. These three types seem to be consistent with the territory of the blood supply from the cortical, temporal, and/or occipital branches of the posterior cerebral artery. Emission computed tomography images may also demonstrate this consistency.
Patients with diffusely increased uptake in both kidneys (often referred to as "host kidneys") on Tc-99m-MDP bone imaging were evaluated. Among 2056 patients reviewed, this finding was seen in 13 patients (0.63%): four with liver cirrhosis, two with lung cancer, one each with primary hepatoma, Hodgkin's disease, malignant lymphoma, thyroid cancer, leukemia, sideroblastic anemia and diabetes mellitus. Renal vascular disease and iron overload are considered to be the major causes of this finding.
Twenty patients with ischemic heart disease were studied with biplane contrast left ventriculography and gated bloob pool scans. An ejection fraction (EF) image was calculated from each gated blood pool scan. The EF image and contrast ventriculograms were divided into three regions and seven segments respectively. The sites of asynergy observed in each study were compared. Segments two, three and six of the contrast ventriculogram corresponded to the anteroseptal and inferoapical regions of the EF image, but it was difficult to differentiate between these segments on the EF image. Segments three and four corresponded to the inferoapical region and segments five and seven corresponded to the posterolateral region. Diffuse asynergy with a low EF (less than 30%) causes a large defect on the EF image. The mean regional EF obtained from the EF image correlated well with the EF calculated from the left ventricular volume curve (n = 50, r = 0.94).
A sixty-year old man with acute myocardial infarction was incidentally found to have a hypertrophied anterolateral papillary muscle (ALPPM) of the left ventricle on gated blood pool (GBP) and T1-201 myocardial perfusion images. Hypertrophy of the ALPPM was visualized as a movable defect in the lateral basal area on GBP imaging throughout the cardiac cycle and on the TI-201 study as a radionuclide accumulating structure, consistent with the defect in the GBP. A combination of these findings may suggest the presence of a hypertrophied papillary muscle of the left ventricle.
Twenty-seven patients were studied for cerebral blood perfusion abnormalities using krypton 81m. A solution of 81mKr was continuously infused into an internal carotid artery, and single-photon emission computed tomograms were recorded. The transverse section images using 81mKr represented the three-dimensional regional cerebral blood perfusion, and this technique seemed to be useful for evaluating the regional cerebral blood perfusion in the deep brain.

The combined tests of serum alpha 1-fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were routinely performed in 210 patients with focal hepatic lesions on a 99mTc-colloid liver scan in order to determine whether these could provide more useful information that AFP test alone in the qualitative evaluation of focal hepatic lesions. The predictive value of hepatoma with positive AFP alone remained 80%. However, when the negative CEA was combined with positive AFP, the predictive value of hepatoma (91%) with both was greatly increased. On the other hand, the predictive value of metastatic liver cancer with positive CEA showed 92%. The combined test of AFP and CEA may be useful for preserving high predictive values of hepatoma and metastatic liver disease.

201TI scintigraphy was performed to visualize malignant lesions postoperatively in 28 patients with thyroid cancer. The results were compared with those of 131 I and/or 99mTc pertechnetate scintigraphy. Of eight patients who had malignant lesions and no normal thyroid tissue, 201TI concentration was observed in seven, while 131I concentration was observed in only three. All of four patients who had malignant lesions and did have remaining normal thyroid tissue showed concentrations of 201TI. 201TI scintigraphy can be performed without any preparation and may be useful in depicting residual and recurrent lesions regardless of the presence of normal thyroid tissue.
