67Ga accumulation in inflammatory lesion and its mechanism: comparison with malignant tumor.

The accumulation of 67Ga in inflammatory lesions increased with time after injection of turpentine oil and reached a plateau 5 days later. At that time the uptake in the lesions was larger than any other tissue, after ten days the lesion uptake decreased. In experiments using rats which had been kept for 5 days after subcutaneous injection of turpentine oil, the accumulation of 67Ga in inflammatory lesions increased with time until six days after administration of 67Ga-citrate. It is clear from this study that 67Ga is avidly accumulated in areas where the subcutaneous tissue is infiltrated with neutrophils and macrophages, that it is not accumulated at the sites in which neutrophils are crowded, that nuclear material, mitochondria, lysosomes and microsomes do not play a major role in 67Ga accumulation in the lesion and that the main binding acid mucopolysaccharide in the lesion is a acid mucopolysaccharide which is none of the following: keratan sulfate, heparan sulfate, heparin, or chondroitin sulfate A, B or C. It is presumed that the main 67Ga binding acid mucopolysaccharide is keratan polysulfate (or other oversulfated acid mucopolysaccharides).

Biodistributions of 201Tl in tumor bearing animals and inflammatory lesion induced animals.

The accumulation of 201Tl in tumor and inflammatory tissues were small. However, this nuclide showed a high concentration in viable tumor tissue, less in connective tissue (containing inflammatory tissue), and was not seen in necrotic tumor tissue regardless of the time after administration of 201Tl(I)-chloride. In inflammatory lesions, 201Tl accumulated in subcutaneous tissue infiltrated with neutrophils and macrophages, and quite large amounts of this nuclide were accumulated in subcutaneous tissue and sites where neutrophils were crowded. Most 201Tl existed in a free form in the fluid of tumor and inflammatory tissues regardless of the time after administration. A small amount of this nuclide was localized in the nuclear, mitochondrial and microsomal fractions in these tissues, and the nuclide was bound to protein in these fractions. The distribution of 201Tl(III)-chloride in tumor bearing animals was essentially the same as that of 201Tl(I)-chloride.

[Scintigraphy with 111In-labeled leukocytes: simplified procedure for labeling].

To utilize 111In leukocytes in a routine work, simplified procedure for sterile leukocytes preparation and labeling with water soluble oxine sulfate was performed. Viability and chemotaxis of leukocytes were maintained during separation and labeling. Chelated rate of 111In with oxine sulfate was 93.5%. Labeling efficiency of 111In leukocytes was 93.8%. Obvious blood pool images due to remained erythrocytes were not observed. 111In labeled leukocytes showed good migration into inflammatory focci.

A new noninvasive quantitative assessment of cerebral blood flow using N-isopropyl-(iodine 123)p-iodoamphetamine.

The use of a nomogram is described as a new noninvasive quantitative assessment of cerebral blood flow using N-isopropyl-(123I)p-iodoamphetamine (IMP) and single-photon emission computed tomography. The nomogram was constructed from a computer analysis of the flow value relative to varying washout rate of brain activities between early and late tomographic images, and partition coefficient between brain tissue and blood. The validity of this method was evaluated in normal volunteers and in patients with cerebrovascular disorders by comparing the cortical flow values (Y) estimated from the IMP-nomogram with initial slope indices (X) by the 133Xe inhalation method. A significant correlation (N = 42, r = 0.88, P less than .001) was demonstrated between them, and the regression line was Y = 1.6X-7. A development and confirmation of this method made it possible to measure flow values noninvasively with the use of IMP.

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries associated with the pre-excitation syndrome.

A case with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries associated with the pre-excitation syndrome is presented. A gated-blood-pool study and Tl-201 myocardial imaging were performed using SPECT. The tomographic gated-blood-pool images showed the shapes of the right ventricle (RV) and left ventricle (LV), i.e., anatomically LV and RV respectively, to be reversed from that of normal patients. The relationships of the great vessels and ventricles also were easily visualized. RV hypertrophy (anatomical LV) was visualized on the Tl-201 images. Phase analysis showed the earliest excitation was in the anteroseptal region near the base of the LV, which was consistent with the site of the accessory conduction pathway. The gated-blood-pool and Tl-201 tomographic studies were helpful for demonstrating the corrected transposition of the great arteries and the pre-excitation syndrome.

Functional mapping of ventricular contraction and phase using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).

A method for functional mapping of ventricular contraction and phase was developed using gated blood-pool SPECT. Parameters of contraction and phase were calculated using length-based and count-based Fourier analyses. In length-based Fourier analysis (LFA), percentage-shortening and length-based phase were calculated based on the changes of lengths from a ventricular centre to edges. In count-based Fourier analysis (CFA), phase and amplitude were also calculated using serial tomographic phase images. Two-dimensional polar display format was employed to summarize the SPECT data of whole cardiac surface. This program was applied to evaluate coronary artery disease and conduction anomalies. The polar functional map using gated blood-pool SPECT can be an effective method to integrate three-dimensional cardiac information in conjunction with myocardial SPECT studies.

Thallium-201 radioactive implant induced X-ray emission scanning of stable iodine distribution in thyroid--phantom experiment.

A new method has been developed for imaging the thyroid gland by the use of 201Tl radioactive implant induced X-ray emission (RIXE). The thyroid phantom was made from two cylindrical tubes embedded in plastic neck phantom. Each tube consisted of stable iodine and 201Tl radioactive source in 10 ml water solution. Some photopeaks in the energy range from 20 to 200 ke V were scanned along a horizontal axis by the collimated Ge detector with high energy resolution. The distribution on the horizontal axis was obtained for the generated I K alpha-ray and some primary 201Tl radiations. The 201Tl RIXE scanning can provide information about the distribution of iodine with 201Tl as well as 201Tl distribution in the thyroid gland. The effectiveness of the 201Tl RIXE technique as a thyroid scanning method is discussed.
