Temporary space maintainers retained with composite resin. Part II: Fracture load in vitro.

The average fracture load during occlusal loading of pontics which were bonded to natural abutment teeth in vitro was found to be 56.1, 57.5 and 74.2 kg for natural, acrylic resin, and Restodent pontics, respectively. Coating the roots of the abutment teeth with a thin layer of silicone rubber before embedding them in stone slightly reduced the strength of the fixed partial dentures. Thermocycling the specimens with coated roots caused a considerable decrease in strength to fracture loads of 33.0, 17.9, and 37.3 kg for natural, acrylic resin, and Restodent pontics, respectively. Fracture of the enamel of natural tooth pontics was observed in a few specimens. The superior strength of the fixed partial dentures with natural tooth and Restodent pontics would indicate that these pontics are superior for clinical trials rather than acrylic resin pontics.

The modified Hawley occlusal splint.

The use of occlusal prostheses is reviewed from the beginning of the twentieth century. The modified Hawley occlusal splint is described as it is used in integrated treatment in oral rehabilitation. The aims of treatment with the modified Hawley occlusal splint are listed and explained in detail. Contraindications and abuse of the Hawley occlusal splint are discussed also.

Copperplating copper band-compound impressions at constant voltage.

According to the experimental results, the electrodeposition of copper on impressions should be carried out with a voltage-stabilized power supply at 0.3 V. This method permits the copperplating of tube impressions of various sizes without the need for further adjustments of controls on the plating apparatus.

Repairing a crown and sleeve-coping prosthesis.

A crown and sleeve-coping prosthesis retainer has been defined. Some causes for the loss of the coping and subsequential clinical manifestations have been discussed. A step-by-step procedure for remaking the coping was presented.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (SQ 20881) in the diagnosis of renovascular hypertension.

SQ 20881, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, was given to 12 patients with renovascular hypertension and to 1 patient with unilateral parenchymatous renal disease in order to evaluate the role of renin-angiotensin systems in their hypertension. Plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone were assayed in systemic blood before and after the injection of SQ 20881. In 5 patients PRA was also measured separately in each renal vein. Blood pressure decreased, PRA increased, and aldosterone level decreased in the 12 renin-dependent patients. When PRA was sampled separately from each renal vein, the increase was larger on the side of the affected kidney. Four patients with a positive test underwent corrective surgery, and in all blood pressure became normal. SQ 20881 is a useful agent in evaluating the contribution of renin in patients with hypertension.

Blood kinin system in renal hypertensive patients administered with SQ 20881.

The i.v. administration of 0.25 mg/kg SQ 20881 to eight renal hypertensive patients caused blood pressure fall and in five of them also reduced heart rate. The latter was attributed to increase in vagal tone. Peripheral and renal blood samples taken at the nadir of the hypotensive response showed considerable inhibition of plasma kininase activity, rise in free kinin level and reduced kininogen content. This reduction was not due to increased consumption as shown by in vitro experiments. PGE2 and PGF2 alpha levels in kidney blood of three patients remained practically unchanged. Plasma renin activity was augmented to a larger extent in blood of kidney with stenotic artery than in the one with patent vessel. It is concluded that the action of SQ 20881 on human blood kinin system, besides inhibition of kininase, involves also reduction of kininogen, the mechanism of which remains to be clarified.

Glycolipids of a halotolerant, moderately halophilic bacterium.

A 247 000 x g particulate fraction from a moderately halophilic halotolerant bacterium incorporated [14C] glucose added as UDP[14C]glucose and 32P-labeled phosphatidylglycerol into glucosylphosphatidylglycerol. Exogenously added phosphatidylglycerol was available to the enzyme only when dispersed in a detergent, preferably Triton X-405, by sonication. The 14C- or 32P-labeled glucosylphosphatidylglycerol was degraded with phospholipase C. The water soluble product formed was isolated and identified by paper chromatography as glucosylglycerolphosphate. The system required Mg2+ or Ca2+ for activity. KCl and NaCl were inhibitory even when added at low concentrations.

Finish lines in fixed prosthodontics.

Ideally, all finish lines should be placed supragingivally. Due to esthetic and carious considerations, however, subgingival placement of the finish line is preferred. No one type of finish line can be used for all crown preparations. In lower anterior teeth or periodontically-treated teeth, the knife-edge finish line appears to be the treatment of choice. In short teeth and preparations for porcelain and porcelain-gold crowns, the full shoulder bevelled preparation is the treatment of choice. In full gold and acrylic veneered gold crowns, as in endodontically-treated teeth, the chamfer preparation is the treatment of choice.

A temporary space maintainer using acrylic resin teeth and a composite resin.

A one-session technique for preparing a temporary space maintainer has been described. The technique consists of attaching an acrylic resin pontic to etched surfaces of natural adjacent teeth by means of a composite resin. The main advantages of this technique are elimination of premature tooth preparation, good esthetics, fair strength, low cost, and rapid completion of the restoration without the need of a dental laboratory.

A method of refacing cemented veneered crowns.

A simple and efficient method has been described for refacing restorations without removing them from the mouth. The impression technique, fabrication of the facing, and its attachment to the crown were described.

Thumb- and pacifier-sucking habits.

The prevalence of thumb- and pacifier-sucking children was studied in two "kibbutz" settlements and city nurseries. The variables considered were age, sex, duration of breast feeding, and family size. Data on 333 children were collected by interviewing the parents, and nurses (in kindegartens and nurseries). Differences in prevalence were found between the three groups. Among the city children, 95 per cent sucked and 89 per cent and 69 per cent of the kibbutz children had sucking habits. In Group A, from whom pacifiers were withheld, most children sucked their fingers. With the increase in age, the prevalence was lower in all groups. No difference was found between the sexes. A reverse association was found between finger and pacifier sucking. No association was found between the habit and the duration of breast feeding. The prevalence was highest in single children. It is suggested that the pacifier may be a substitute of choice for thumb sucking.
