Marital stress, strain, and coping strategies were investigated in chronic pain patients by administering the Problems of Everyday Life Interview (PEL) to 55 married chronic pain patients. Subjects were assigned to either limited, moderate, or heightened mastery groups based upon PEL mastery scores. The heightened mastery group reported less marital strain, less marital stress, more use of negotiation, less use of selective ignoring, and less use of manage-stress coping strategies than either limited mastery or moderate mastery groups. There were no significant differences between limited mastery and moderate mastery groups on any variables measured. There were no differences between mastery groups on advice seeking. The effects of mastery as a mediator of coping and stress are discussed, as well as the advisability of incorporating treatments that specifically address feelings of lack of control over stressful events into chronic pain programs, especially when marital problems are identified.

The relation between aspects of depression and the wish to be held was studied in 72 male and 57 female college students. Females reported higher levels of depressive experiences associated with issues of dependency as well as more intense wishes to be held. In both sexes the intensity of the wish to be held was related to dependency; however, it was the correlations of these variables with level of depression that revealed differences between males and females. In males, the wish to be held covaried positively with the overall level of depression, Whereas in females it remained invariant across levels of depression. Thus, males who describe themselves as more depressed, relative to other males, expressed more feelings associated with dependency and more intense wishes to be held.

This paper presents techniques for computer-aided analysis of medical ultrasonic images. Methods of image processing, feature extraction and a classification algorithm for tissue characterization are described. Based on these techniques a pattern recognition system for semi-automatic analysis of ultrasonic images has been developed and proved within three clinical studies, which aimed to improve the ultrasound diagnosis of the prostate, the thyroid and the female breast. The results show that computer analysis of ultrasonic images is capable of providing a quantitative diagnosis as well as of differentiating tumor lesions by sonography.
The effects of pending litigation for compensation on treatment outcomes of patients with chronic low back pain, were assessed. The 81 patients with chronic low back pain who participated in a six-week behavioral treatment program organized around the theme of self-control, were differentiated according to whether there were unsettled legal claims for compensation. Scales from the MMPI and Health Index were administered before and after treatment. Three behavioral measures of physical mobility were obtained from representative subsamples in each group before and after treatment and at one and three months follow-up. Results indicated that after treatment, patients without litigation pending obtained significantly greater reductions on the Hypochondriasis and Hysteria scales of the MMPI and achieved relatively greater improvements on two behavior measures. Because patients with litigation pending also evidenced significant behavioral gains, the belief that these patients are at risk for treatment appears to be true only in relation to the patients without current litigation rather than in an absolute sense.
Studied the relationships between depth of depression, anaclitic and introjective depressive experiences, and dimensions of illness behavior in 37 chronic pain patients. Depth of depression and degree of introjective depressive experiences showed similar positive covariation with a broad range of illness behavior: Namely, hypochondriasis, disease conviction, affective inhibition, affective disturbance, and irritability. The findings suggest that depression characterized by feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and self-doubt, rather than themes of abandonment, is associated differentially with disturbances in the illness behavior of chronic pain patients.

Monoclonal antibodies were raised against normal human bone marrow cells. One of the antibodies obtained, monoclonal antibody 3C4 (MA 3C4), the subject of this paper, was characterised by immunofluorescence studies with viable normal peripheral blood and bone marrow cells and by immunoperoxidase studies using paraffin sections. In bone marrow and peripheral blood MA 3C4 reacts selectively with cells of late neutrophilic granulopoiesis (myelocytes, metamyelocytes, and neutrophilic granulocytes). Cells of erythropoiesis, thrombopoiesis and lymphopoiesis are negative. In lymph node and spleen only neutrophils react with MA 3C4. In non-haemic tissue reactivity was seen with epithelial cells of a variety of different gland ducts. Thus the antigen detected by MA 3C4 can serve as a marker for neutrophil differentiation in normal haemopoiesis and as a marker for ductal epithelial cells of a variety of organs within non-haemic tissue. The antigen is formalin-resistant and can be detected in paraffin sections. The antibody thus appears to be a valuable reagent for both haematological research and for routine pathology.

Two cell lines derived from primary human renal-cell cancers (RCC) have been established and characterized. Cell line 786-O has been in culture for longer than 1 year and has been subcultured more than 50 times. It has a doubling time of 45 hr and a hypertriploid karyotype and possesses a Y chromosome. Cell line 769-P also has been in culture for longer than 1 year. It has been subcultured 50 times and has a doubling time of 35 hr and a hypodiploid karyotype. Cells from both lines are epithelial, and they produce tumors in the cheek pouches of immunosuppressed hamsters. Neither cell line is contaminated with Mycoplasma. Cells of the two lines can be distinguished from HeLa cells both by their karyotypes and by the mobility patterns of their isoenzymes of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
Characterization studies have been carried out on eight cell lines (253J, 192B, 639V, 647V, 486P, 575A,743E, and 751G) established from transitional cell cancers of the human urinary tract. Although subtle morphological differences exist among individual lines, each has an epithelial morphology and exhibits multilayering. The doubling times for the cells range from 20 to 56 hr, and at least a 1-to-3 split can be achieved when they are subcultured every 4th day. Karyotypic analysis revealed a hyperdiploid stemline for each cell line, and presence of a Y chromosome was confirmed by Q banding in five of the lines. The tumorigenic nature of the cell lines was demonstrated by their production of tumors in hamsters and confirmed by colony formation in agar. The transitional cell cancer lines were shown to be free of Mycoplasma, and their glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase mobility patterns and their Karyotypes prove that they are not HeLa cells.
A technique for initiating and propagating epithelial cell cultures of human renal cell cancer and adjacent nontumor kidney is described. Seventy-five percent of the tumors and 79% of the adjacent kidney specimens cultured with this method have shown initial outgrowth and have been subcultured at least once. Two renal cell cancer cultures initiated by this method have now been in continuous culture more than 6 months, have been subcultured 27 and 18 times, and now appear to be stable lines. The ability to establish long-term in vitro cultures of human renal cell cancers will facilitate studies concerning the immunoreactivity, cholesterol metabolism, the isolation of renal-cell-cancer-specific antigens, and in vitro chemotherapy testing and will further our understanding of the basic biology of human renal cell cancer.

Finely minced explants from 54 TCC2 of the human urinary tract were cultured in vitro in an attempt to establish cell lines. Cells with epithelial morphology grew out from 48 tumor explants, and long-term cell cultures were established from 10. Six of the cell cultures have been maintained for over 18 months with 50 to 70 transfers and, therefore, are considered permanent cell lines. The epithelial cells in the established cultures are small, exhibit rapid doubling time, and show multilayering. The cells were examined both microscopically and by cultivation techniques, and they were found to be free from contaminating microorganisms, including Mycoplasma. The established cultures grow rapidly in roller bottles and, therefore, can be produced in large quantities. These cells also remain viable after being stored for 3 years in liquid nitrogen.
