Breast cancer induced by radiation. Relation to mammography and treatment of acne.

This communication reports cases of 16 women in who cancer of the breast developed after radiation therapy for acne or hirsutism, suggesting another group at higher risk than is generally expected for cancer of the breast. It is prudent to regard the carcinogenic effect of radiation on the breast as proportional to dose without a threshold. Mammography in young women should be ordered only selectively, not for screening.

Autoimmune anti-T cell antibodies in the sera of patients with mycosis fungoides.

The serum of persons with mycosis fungoides contains IgG antibody believed to be specific for T cells, similar to the auto-antibodies reported in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, Hodgkin's disease and sarcoidosis. The antibody is present during the active, and disappears during the inactive, phase of the disease.

Proportions of mouse erythrocyte rosette-forming lymphocytes, immunoglobulin-bearing cells and E rosettes in patients with lymphoproliferative diseases.

The proportions of mouse erythrocyte rosette-forming (MERF) lymphocytes, immunoglobulin (Ig)-bearing cells and E rosettes were examined in the peripheral blood of patients with lymphoproliferative diseases. The proportion of MERF lymphocytes was considerably increased in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. The correlation between the proportions of MERF and Ig-bearing cells, characteristic of healthy individuals, is not observed in the lymphoproliferative diseases. It is suggested that in a part of the patients with these diseases, the study of the proportion of MERF cells provides more accurate information on the proportion of lymphocytes of bursal origin than does counting of the Ig-bearing cells.

B and T cell markers of bone marrow and peripheral blood lymphoid cells in patients with paraproteinaemia.

Studies have been carried out on B and T cells in bone marrow and peripheral blood from patients with paraproteinaemia. The peripheral blood of patients with multiple myeloma showed a significant increase of B cells, mainly lymphoid cells bearing immunoglobulins corresponding to the paraproteins, while in patients with benign monoclonal gammopathy only a slight increase of B cells and a moderate decrease of T cells have been found. As to the bone marrow, the B cell population was significantly raised in patients with multiple myeloma, but it remained unchanged in patients with benign monoclonal gammopathy. Our findings may offer a new possibility to distinguish between these two diseases and provide further data to their pathogenesis.

Cancer of the breast--induction by radiation and role of mammography.

Conflict in the management of cancer of the breast exists. Diagnosis by x-ray mammography provides early effective treatment, but x-ray exposure to the breast is cancerogenic. Prudence requires the use of low dose x-rays in mammography, and limits the use of x-ray mammography in the young. Guide lines for the indications for mammography are changing, and large scale population exposure to radiation should await results of demonstration projects in the United States.

[Cryomacroglobulinemic purpura with liver cirrhosis and hepatic porphyria].

Hepatic porphoria and histologically verified cirrhosis, teleangiectasia, purpose, papular skin lesions existing for eight years, as well as cryomacroglobulin were found in a 49 year old man. Pathogenetically the liver disease is considered to be the primary event, which was accompanied by secondary cryoglobulinemia. IgG and IgM type of thrombus in the vessels and of small granular deposits corresponding to the type of cryoprotein in the blood, were detected in the vessel walls of the upper part in the dermis and along these vessels of both purpuri and papular skin lesions. Immunoprecipitates could be revealed by FTC-labelled antihuman complement. In the skin lesions porphyrin could not be demonstrated. The investigation of cryoglobulin and of porphyrin disorders is reasonable in every patient with purpura accompanying pathological liver processes.

Effect of immunization on the RNA polymerase activity of guinea-pig macrophage nuclei.

Macrophages from peritoneal exudate contain three types of DNA dependent RNA polymerase. The activity of RNA polymerases in macrophages derived from normal animals is very low. Guinea-pigs were immunized by sheep red blood cells. The immunization enhanced the activity of the RNA polymerase of macrophages derived from peritoneal exudate. The RNA polymerase activity was tested after the solubilization and chromatographic resolution of the three types of polymerases with exogenous template. The results obtained indicated that the immunization enhances the levels of polymerase I and III 10 fold while the level of polymerase II increased 5 fold.

[Investigations of the T and B cells and the hemopexin-carrying lymphocytes in cases of porphyria cutanea tarda (author's transl)].

The immunoglobulins and hemopexin carrying cells have been determined in 14 patients having Porphyria cutanea tarda and in 15 healthy volunteers. At the same time, the stimulating effect of phytohemaglutinine and the leucocytesmigration inhibition by purified tuberculine proteins, were measured. In the 14 cases of Porphyria cutanea tarda, the IgG content and the number of hemopexin carrying lymphocytes was significantly increased, while the amounts of the other immunoglobuline carrying cells, and of T lymphocytes, was unchanged. Phytohemaglutinine stimulation and inhibition of leukocytes migration by purified tuberculine proteins were found to be identical in both patients and control groups.

Effect of hydrocortisone 17-butyrate on the percutaneous absorption of antibiotics.

Abrption of antibiotics from combined preparations containing oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, doxycycline or gentamicin and hydrocortisone 17-butyrate into the skin of rats was examined. The penetration of antibiotics from the ointment into the skin was inhibited by 0.2% hydrocortisone 17-butyrate to a significant degree. It is suggested that this effect of hydrocortisone 17-butyrate is the consequence of its vasoconstrictor action.

Echolalic speech in childhood autism. Consideration of possible underlying loci of brain damage.

The speech of echolalic autistic children is (1) specifically lacking in appropriate use of expressive-intonational features, but (2) the echolalic child's clear articulation of words and phrases indicates that discrimination of phonemic features is intact. The impairment in aphasic disorders is just the reverse. Failure to attend to auditory stimuli and the characteristic language disorder are among the most consistent findings in autistic children; they could be related. Discrimination of differential stress emphasis is the way the normal young child extracts major morphemic word stems and syntactic features from environmental speech; this may be a primitive perceptual function of brain stem auditory centers. The brain stem auditory system is especially vulnerable to perinatal injury. Damage to this system is an example of the kind of lesion that might lead to behavioral handicaps without neurological signs.

[Is the lupus miliaris disseminatus of tuberculous origin?].

Lupus miliaris disseminatus is differentiated from tuberculosis and from the group of tuberculids on the basis of clinical observations, laboratory data and therapeutical results of the past 20 years. Histopathology, frequent recurrences and dissemination provide evidences for the allergic etiology of lupus miliaris disseminatus. Treatment with tetracyclines is effective.
