Intracranial metastases from adenocarcinoma of cervix: a case report.

Carcinoma of cervix usually spreads contiguously to the adjacent organs, by lymphatics to the pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes and by hematogenous route to distant organs. The common sites of distant metastasis are lung, supraclavicular lymph nodes, liver, and bones. The brain is a rare site of metastasis. We report here a rare case of a 72-year-old woman with carcinoma of cervix, FIGO stage IIA, who developed metastases to the brain.

What's involved in a program transfer between hospitals?

More hospitals are being forced to restructure in a bid to cope with financial constraints. One effective option is the transfer of clinical programs between facilities. The procedure is complicated and commands good leadership, negotiating skills, trust and a comprehensive understanding of the program being transferred. This article deals with the knowledge gained from the recent successful transfer of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program and its associated operating funds from one Toronto hospital to another.

Juxtacortical osteogenic sarcoma of mandible. A case report.

Juxtacortical osteogenic sarcoma of bone is a relatively uncommon form of osteogenic sarcoma. In the jaw bones, it is extremely rare. Here, we present a case of Juxtacortical Osteogenic Sarcoma of mandible in a 45 year old man which presented as an epulis in the mandibular incisor region.

Evaluation of panoramic radiography and axial computed tomography in cases of ameloblastoma and central giant cell granuloma of mandible.

Evaluation of mandibular mass lesions is a perplexing clinical problem. Some of these lesions have very similar clinical presentation and even similar or overlapping imaging features. Plain radiographs and orthopantomograms are frequently requisitioned for the diagnosis and are helpful in localization and characterization of these lesions. However, the specificity of diagnosis remains low. A study was undertaken to further characterize these lesions using Computed Tomography (CT) and analysis of cross sectional images of various mandibular mass lesions. Of these, imaging features of ameloblastoma and central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) were studied and compared, which is reported in this paper.

Midline lethal granuloma--a clinical enigma.

Midline Lethal granuloma is characterized by progressive destruction of nose, paranasal sinuses and palate. Till date, the diagnosis of this mutilating process remains as enigma due to the non specific histological and systemic findings. However, over the years the clinicians have been able to divide the "Lethal midline granuoloma syndrome" into clinical entities: Idiopathic midline destructive disease, Wegener's granulomatosis, polymorphic retiaculosis and Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. This article attempts to distinguish between these disease entities in the light of 2 case reports of Idiopathic midline destructive disease.

Impact of socio-demographic variables, oral hygiene practices and oral habits on periodontal health status of Indian elderly: a community-based study.

Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss. It is has insidious onset, chronic course, and commonly result due to cumulative effect of dietary habits, oral hygiene methods and oral habits practiced over the years. This study was planned to evaluate the periodontal health status of elderly population (above 60 years) in the community, using CPITN index, gingival recession, mobility of teeth and halitosis, using modified WHO Oral Health Survey Proforma. In addition, impact of several socio-demographic variables, oral hygiene practices, oral habits, chronic systemic diseases, dietary preferences and body mass index (BMI) on periodontal health status was also studied. It was found that prevalence of periodontal diseases in the elderly was high. Step-wise multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that periodontal diseases were directly correlated with age, oral hygiene practices and presence of cardiac diseases.

Comparative study of cutting efficiency of hand, gyromatic and path-finder root canal instruments. A scanning electron microscope study.

The cutting efficiency of path finder system was evaluated and compared with gyromatic and hand instrumentation. Mesio-buccal root-canal of maxillary first permanent molar was chosen for the study. Each experimental group comprised of eight teeth each and a control group, where no instrumentation of root-canal was done, comprised of 2 teeth. After preparation, the roots were split vertically, and prepared for SEM study. Debris and smear layer on canal walls were given a score of O to 3 where O denoted nil and 3 denoted heavy coatings. Statistical analysis of the result showed that there was no significant difference between the various experimental groups. The new path finder system compared favourably with gyromatic and hand instruments in cleaning the canal walls.

Modeling of oxygen uptake in perfluorocarbon emulsions. Some comparisons with uptake by blood.

The use of perfluorocarbons emulsified in water as blood substitutes (artificial blood), is well known. Although considerable research has been devoted to the study of stability, toxicity, and gas solubility properties of these emulsions, there is no quantitative guide to the oxygen transport behavior in such emulsions, especially with reference to this transport process in actual blood. This paper describes a mathematical model from which the oxygen flux into a straight, cylindrical tube carrying a perfluorocarbon emulsion may be computed. The solutions to the proposed model can be adapted to that for a capillary or for a single tube in a blood oxygenator. The rates of oxygen transfer, so obtained, have been compared with analogous transfer rates that can be achieved in natural blood flowing under identical conditions. Therefore, the minimal solubilization capacity for oxygen required of a perfluorocarbon emulsion can be estimated on a quantitative basis. The modeling approach used in this study is based on the well tested theory of mass transfer in microheterogeneous media reported in the chemical engineering literature.

Immunological studies in oral submucous fibrosis.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a high risk precancerous condition. The possible role of immunological factors in the pathogenesis of this condition was evaluated in 113 cases and 25 controls. The male/female ratio was 1.5/1. The mean age of males was significantly lower than that of females. The mean ESR levels were within normal limits, but for a higher than 20 mm fall per hr. in 40% of the cases. The serum IgA, IgG, and IgM levels were elevated significantly as compared to the controls. Circulating auto-antibodies and tissue-deposited antibodies were also found in 33% and 40% of the cases, respectively. From the analysis of the results, it is difficult to ascribe an auto-immune basis for the causation of OSMF. The female bias and elder age group, the factors generally considered in favour of an immune disorder, was not found in our study. However, raised ESR in 40% and serum globulin levels in 47% of the patients, distinctly higher levels of serum immunoglobulins, and positivity for circulating and tissue deposited antibodies in 33% and 34% of the cases respectively, do indicate an immunological basis. Therefore, further studies are required to ascertain the role of cellular immune mechanism and genetic parameters to explain the etiopathogenesis of this complex clinical entity.
