Oro-pharyngeal sensitivity and elicitation of swallowing in man.

In dry swallowings repeated at maximum frequency, manometric recording on healthy volunteers showed that the swallowing intervals successively increased. After surface anaesthesia of the oro-pharynx the difficulties in dry swallowing increased. A corresponding increase did not occur in sham tests. The results show that the elicitation of swallowing is dependent upon oro-pharyngeal sensitivity and further that the reflexive elicitation of swallowing cannot instantly be fully replaced by other mechanisms.

Salivary stimulus and swallowing reflex in man.

The importance of receptor stimulation by saliva for the elicitation of the swallowing reflex in man was investigated by testing the capacity for repeated dry swallowing at maximum frequency in two controlled series: one with stimulated and one with inhibited secretion of saliva. The swallowing response was recorded manometrically. A positive correlation was found between the secretion of saliva and the capacity was found between the secretion of saliva and the capacity for repeated dry swallowing. It was concluded that the swallowing reflex in man is dependent on an adequate stimulus. The importance of an intact saliva secretion specially in cases with swallowing dysfunction is pointed out.

Laryngeal obstruction assessed by computed tomography.

The aim of this study was to find out if laryngeal obstruction could be assessed by measuring the glottic area using computed tomography (CT). Results from model studies were compared with those from twelve patients with laryngeal diseases. Determination of the orolaryngeal airway resistance (Rol) was used as a reference method. The correlation between airway resistance and area in both the model and among the patients was consistent, with a curvilinear relationship. The results indicate that it is possible to measure the area of a short obstruction by CT and that this area determines the degree of obstruction.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma: a third type of human salivary gland neoplasms characterized cytogenetically by reciprocal translocations.

Using G-banding technique, the chromosomes were studied in four consecutive preparations from cultured material from a human adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland. The results indicated that the carcinoma had originated with a normal diploid stemline, and that reciprocal translocations played a predominant role in development of an abnormal stemline. The propensity of developing variant cells, as well as an abnormal stemline, characterized by various types of reciprocal translocations, was found to be a property shared by two other types of salivary gland neoplasms studied by banding techniques, namely the pleomorphic adenoma and the acinic cell tumour. The tissue of origin is suggested to be the crucial determinant responsible for this important cytogenetical similarity between different types of salivary gland tumours.
