A modified approach for obtaining cephalograms in the natural head position.

Cephalograms taken in the Natural Head Position (NHP), and related to the true vertical and the true horizontal reference planes should logically replace the planes used in conventional cephalometry. This has not happened because of the difficulties in radiographically recording the NHP. This paper presents a modified approach to capture the true vertical reference line on the patients' face itself in NHP, which is then transferred to the conventional lateral cephalogram.

Assessing differential functioning in a satisfaction scale.

In this study, an item response theory-based differential functioning of items and tests (DFIT) framework (N. S. Raju, W. J. van der Linden, & P. F. Fleer, 1995) was applied to a Likert-type scale. Several differential item functioning (DIF) analyses compared the item characteristics of a 10-item satisfaction scale for Black and White examinees and for female and male examinees. F. M. Lord's (1980) chi-square and the extended signed area (SA) measures were also used. The results showed that the DFIT indices consistently performed in the expected manner. The results from Lord's chi-square and the SA procedures were somewhat varied across comparisons. A discussion of these results along with an illustration of an item with significant DIF and suggestions for future DIF research are presented.

Anterior chamber intra ocular lens implantation.

The role of A.C. IOL in modern implant surgery has become somewhat debatable, since, the choice procedure to day is undoubtedly an ECCE with a PC lens implant preferably in the capsular bag. Even so, anterior chamber lens implantation has its definite indications. As such it is necessary for the implant surgeon to be familiar with the latest technique in this modality of surgery as well. Many of the complications of earlier rigid model AC IOLs were mainly due to defective lens design. With the advent of new generation flexible one-piece PMMA AC lenses, many of these complications have been eliminated. A.C. IOL implantation, although less frequently done now, has its own legitimate place in modern IOL surgery.
