[The comparative evaluation of the efficacy of tocopherol acetate in the combined treatment of patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus].
Time course was studied of indices for lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total lipids count in erythrocytic membranes (EM) and blood plasma (BP) of patients with essential hypertension (EH) associated with diabetes mellitus (DM), under the effect of alpha-tocopherol. EH patients demonstrated intensification of LPO in cellular membranes and BP. Association of EH with DM is responsible for a more significant increase of the levels of accumulation of LPO products in EM and rise in total lipids content both in cellular membranes and BP. The use of alpha-tocopheroli acetas in combination therapy of both EH- and EH+ DM patients promoted normalization of LPO processes in EM and reduction of BP content of the LPO products.
[Comprehensive ultrasound study in surgical diseases of the adrenals].
Combined staged ultrasonic examination of 53 patients with surgical diseases of the adrenals (Icenko--Cushing's disease and hormonally active tumors) included preoperative transcutaneous ultrasonic examination, ultrasound-monitored spot fine needle aspiration biopsy, intraoperative and postoperative ultrasonic examinations. Transcutaneous ultrasonic examination was found to be little informative in Icenko--Cushing's disease, whereas in adrenal tumors it was virtually as sensitive as computer-aided tomography. Ultrasound-monitored spot fine needle aspiration biopsy proved to be a highly informative safe method, which helps morphologically diagnose the disease before surgery. Intraoperative ultrasonic examination helped reduce the surgical trauma in all the cases, and in patients with Icenko--Cushing's disease it gave an idea of the type of morphologic changes in the removed adrenal. Ultrasonic monitoring of tissue status at the site of intervention helped timely detect the postoperative complications.
[The use of antioxidants (alpha-tocopherol acetate) in the treatment of diabetes mellitus].
The authors have examined the time course of lipid peroxidation processes and the levels of total lipids in red cell membranes and blood plasma of diabetics administered alpha-tocopherol acetate. Patients with medium-severe diabetes of the first and second types were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 patients were administered only traditional sugar-reducing treatment, in Group 2 alpha-tocopherol acetate in a daily dose 300 mg was added to such therapy. Similar examinations were carried out in both the groups before and after the treatment. Lipid peroxidation levels and the content of total lipids were found significantly increased in the cellular membranes and blood plasma of Group 2 patients, whereas in Group 1 no changes of this kind were detected. Therapy with alpha-tocopherol acetate normalized lipid peroxidation processes in the red cell membranes and the total lipid content in the blood plasma, reduced the blood plasma level of lipid peroxidation products and the content of total lipids in red cell membranes. These results permit a conclusion on the favorable effect of alpha-tocopherol acetate on blood plasma lipid peroxidation and total lipid levels in diabetics.
[Lipid peroxidation in patients with hypertension and renal hypertension against a background of diabetes mellitus].
Time course of changes was studied in parameters characterizing lipid peroxidation (LPO) and the total lipids counts in red cell membranes (RCM) and blood plasma (BP) of patients with hypertensive disease (HD) and arterial hypertension in chronic pyelonephritis against the background of diabetes mellitus (DM). The study groups were DM patients (group I), those with coexistent HDDM (group II), and those with arterial hypertension caused by chronic pyelonephritis in the presence of DM (group III). All three groups of patients demonstrated intensification of the cellular membrane- and blood plasma LPO as well as increase in the total lipids counts. HDDM results in much higher levels of the RCM and BP LPO products. Relatively higher RCM and BP LPO in group II patients as compared with III one, permits differentiating the above pathologic mixes. The results obtained allow us to recommend that antioxidants be incorporated into a complex therapy to be adopted for treating the above conditions.
