[Selection and procurement of the bones for transplantation].

In 1971-1990 the laboratory of preservation of tissues procured 2970 bone segments of different localization (diaphysis of long bones--2535, vertebrae--222, ribs--53, articulation ends of the bones--53 ets.). Problems of selection and procurement of the bones under nonsterile conditions with the following treatment in the performic acid and cryopreservation are elucidated. Results of allotransplantation of bones were studied in 1517 patients: 412 patients with fractures and false joints, 50 patients with osteochondrosis of intervertebral disks, 68--with scoliosis, 602--with osseous tumors and tumor-like alterations, 35 patients with congenital dysplasia of the hip joint. Postoperative complications such as hematomas, suppurations of the wound, osteomyelitis, rejection of transplants took place in 1.7% of the cases which completely justifies bone alloplasty.

[Polymorphism of neurologic manifestations of lumbar osteochondrosis and their dynamics after surgical treatment].

In the article is analyzed the spectrum of neurologic disturbances in 107 patients with lumbar intervertebral osteochondrosis that were subjected to the subtotal diskectomy and anterior spondylodesis. The authors describe the dynamics of pre-- and post-operative neurologic status. The significance and value of separate signs, pain syndrome, disturbances of sensitivity and changes of reflexes have been established. The results of the operative treatment of the degenerative spine instability have been evaluated in the clinical conditions.

[Cryopreservation and allogeneic transplantation of tendon tissue].

The authors describe their methods of sterilization, cryopreservation and lyophilization of the tendinous tissue which provide sterility and preservation of the structure and the plastic properties. They present a technique of saturation of the plastic material with biologically active preparations selected with regard to the aims the character of the surgical intervention and new methods of alloplastic reconstruction of the tendons of the wrist. The long-term results of the treatment of 303 patients with inveterate injuries of the tendons and of the bursal and ligamentous apparatus who were given 432 cryopreserved allografts have been analysed. In 89.6% of the cases the results were good and satisfactory.

[Alloplasty in injuries of the Achilles tendon].

Methods of alloplastic restoration of tendo calcaneus (Achilles) after different injuries with the application of tendinous transplants are described. An analysis of clinical observations for 25 years in 112 patients is presented. The methods used for operative interventions and preparation of plastic materials gave good and satisfactory results in most of the patients (97.3%).

[Cryo-ultrasonic surgery of bone tumors].

Results of treatment of 38 patients with bone tumors and tumor-like injuries of bones were studied. All the patients were subjected to surgical operations associated with a single cryoultrasonic procedure. The period of observations was from 1 to 5 years. The author has made a conclusion that cryoultrasonic surgery of bone tumors gives good results: recovery was achieved in 37 patients. No recurrences were noted. One patient with osteosarcoma died 5 months after operation (metastases to the lungs).

[Spinal osteochondrosis in geriatric practice].

The author generalizes his experiences with the treatment of 73 patients older than 60 with vertebral osteochondrosis. In the system of treatment of such patients a special place is given to electric sleep and electroanalgesia in combination with other physical procedures. The operative treatment is indicated in single cases.

[Notes on the hemostatic effect of the cryodestruction of bone tumors].

Cryodestruction is a comparatively new method in orthopedic oncology used for the treatment of bone tumors and not practised on a large scale in the clinic. The work elucidates peculiarities of the postoperative period observed in 112 patients with bone tumors after exposure to cryogenic procedures. The "hemostatic effect" following cryodestruction of tumors and tumoral injuries of bones is critically analyzed.

[Traumatic suppurative intervertebral osteochondritis].

The author observed purulent intervertebral osteochondritis in 2 of 107 patients operated upon for osteochondrosis of the vertebral column and in 1 of 98 patients after discography. Special attention is given to difficult diagnosis during the first days due to the absence of the clinical signs pathognomonic of this complication. After a repeated operation with drainage of the focus two patients have recovered within 3-5 months with an outcome in a complete ankylosis.

[Technical advantages and limitations of using ultrasonics in surgery of the spine].

The authors used ultrasonic devices in operations on the vertebral column in experiments in 92 animals in order to study the effect of ultrasound on osteogenesis. In the clinic the ultrasonic devices were used in operations on the vertebral column of 30 patients with lumbar osteochondrosis. Positive results were obtained in 29 patients.
