In order to evaluate the usefulness of sialyl SSEA-1 (SLX) as a tumor marker of digestive cancers, serum levels of the antigen were determined in 334 patients with malignancies and 196 patients with benign diseases. The results indicated that positivity of the antigen in sera from malignant patients was highest in pancreatic cancer (58%) and biliary tract cancer (56%). False positive incidence of SLX in sera from benign diseases was as low as 6%, revealing low false positivity. Comparison with other tumor markers such as CA19-9, CA-50, CEA and ST-439 showed that positivity of SLX was as high as that of CEA, whereas it was lower than that of CA19-9 or CA-50. On the other hand, false positivity of SLX as well as ST-439 was lowest, and accuracy of SLX was no less high than that of CA19-9 or CA-50. In sera of pancreatic and biliary tract cancer, positive incidences of CA19-9, CEA and ST-439 were 80%, 64% and 53%, respectively, and the diagnostic efficiency increased by combined assay of SLX with CA19-9 (88%), CEA (81%) and ST-439 (71%). SLX appears to be no less useful than the other recently developed carbohydrate antigens or CEA as serum tumor marker for pancreatico-biliary cancer.
Endotoxin shock was made in guinea pigs to understand the initial pathogenesis in connection with the oxygen radicals from leukocytes. The intraperitoneal injection of LD50 E. coli endotoxin induced rapid leukopenia, and leukocytosis appeared at 24 hours of injection. The cell differential counts of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid revealed a significant increase in eosinophil at 10 and 30 minutes. There was also a significant increase in neutrophil at 24 hours. The activity of superoxide dismutase in the lung tissue decreased at 10 minutes of injection and remained low for 24 hours. Malonaldehyde, a lipid peroxidation metabolite by oxidants, gradually increased and reached a maximal value at 60 minutes of injection. The lung damage was histologically characterized by a rapid appearance of the alveolar edema and scattered infiltration of granulocytes. These suggested the endotoxin injection induced activation of granulocytes recruited from peripheral blood to cause oxidant reaction in lung tissues, which finally produced acute lung injury.

The aim of this paper is to report a very rare case of bronchobronchiolitis obliterans accompanied by mesenteric Castleman's lymphoma. A 45-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with progressive exertional dyspnea. Chest radiography showed overinflated lungs suggesting emphysema and pulmonary function tests revealed severely restrictive as well as obstructive impairments. Selective alveolobronchogram and endoscopy using a thin fiberoptic bronchoscope (3 mm in diameter) demonstrated multiple obstructions of small bronchi. Using a biopsy forceps, a small piece of tissue of bronchial wall was obtained from the focus of obstructive change, which showed histologically nonspecific inflammatory change including granulation. Therefore, we diagnosed her disease as bronchobronchiolitis obliterans (BBO). In addition, she had a large abdominal mass. On operation, it was found to be located in the mesenterium. It was then removed and the histological examination revealed Castleman's lymphoma, hyaline-vascular type. After operation, the blood IgM level, which was high on admission decreased rapidly and her dyspnea was reduced, suggesting that Castleman's lymphoma was related to the pathogenesis of her respiratory disease.

The effect of synthetic omega-conotoxin (omega-CgTX) on the contractile responses of segments of rat ileum, stomach fundus and uterus and guinea pig taenia coli were investigated. Omega-CgTX (10(-9)-5 x 10(-6) M) did not inhibit the contractile responses of all smooth muscle segments to high KCl and/or ACh. However, unexpectedly, omega-CgTX (3 x 10(-7)-10(-5) M) alone caused dose-dependent contraction of segments of the stomach fundus and uterus. These contractile responses to omega-CgTX alone depended upon the presence and/or the influx of extracellular Ca2+; and they were inhibited by calcium antagonists such as diltiazem, nitrendipine and verapamil, with the exception that the segments of stomach fundus was not inhibited by verapamil. With the segments of uterus, but not those of other tissues, omega-CgTX (10(-7)-5 x 10(-6) M) significantly enhanced the contractile responses to various concentrations of ACh and high KCl. With rat ileum and guinea pig taenia coli segments, omega-CgTX (10(-9)-5 x 10(-6) M) did not induce a contractile response or have an enhancing effect. These findings suggest that omega-CgTX may have a calcium agonist-like effect on smooth muscles such as the stomach fundus and uterus of rats.

Two antifungal antibiotics octacosamicins A and B were isolated from the culture broth of a strain of actinomycetes, which was identified as a strain of Amycolatopsis. These antibiotics were isolated by resin adsorption and purified by column chromatography and preparative HPLC. Both antibiotics were found to be new substances from their physico-chemical properties. They showed broad antifungal spectra.

Actinonin and amastatin are low-molecular-weight inhibitors of aminopeptidases associated with cell surfaces. The purpose of this study was to determine their effects on human neutrophil functions such as chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Both actinonin and amastatin enhanced chemotaxis to the chemotactic peptide N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine. On the other hand, the effects of both agents on neutrophil phagocytosis were varied. Bacterial attachment to neutrophils was slightly affected by these agents. However, actinonin enhanced the internalization of bacteria by neutrophils. Neutrophil leucine aminopeptidase activity was also determined and was found to be weakly inhibited by these agents.

"Multidimensional scaling technique was applied to the Brazilian migration matrix in order to identify the functional regions of the nation, using the 1970 census data for males. The results obtained from three types of proximity matrices confirmed the key roles of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso as the core states in addition to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Substantial circulation of migrants among the core states runs counter to the popular notion about the Northeastern states as the major source of labor in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The Northeast [was] found to consist of three groups of states: Maranhao, Piaui and Ceara showed a stable clustering, but peripherally located, in all configurations; and, the other two groups failed to form persistent regions across configurations. Though limited in scope, the observed attraction of Espirito Santo and Goias violated the widely held negative effect of distance and deserves further investigation."
