Small sharp foreign bodies are common in dominant hand. A case of an unusual, large, blunt, metallic foreign body in the non-dominant hand, with treatment and result, is reported.
The management of fractures of the radial head is still a controversial subject. Fifty cases of radial head fractures have been treated by conservative means. These cases were immobilized in a plaster Paris cylinder cast for 3 weeks to restrict the movement of flexion and extension at the elbow, while encouraging supination and pronation movements from the very beginning. The cases have been evaluated and 43/50 have shown excellent results.
An epidemiological survey of 1239 normal subjects without respiratory symptoms was undertaken in an urban locality of New Delhi in 1974. The subjects were divided into males aged under or over 22 and females under or over 17. Various statistical models were calculated to relate peak expiratory flow rate to the age, height, and weight of the subjects in each group. The linear model was simple, convenient, and adequately explained the variation in peak expiratory flow rate.

The concentration of lead and cadmium in the seminal plasma of men in the general population, including fertile and infertile subjects, was measured. Semen samples were categorised as demonstrating oligospermia (sperm concentration < 20 x 10(6)/ml), asthenospermia (<50% motilesperm), oligoasthenospermia (a combination of the two criteria), and azoospermia (no sperm). An increase in lead and cadmium levels was observed in infertile men and there was a significant negative correlation of cadmium and lead semen concentration with sperm motility and sperm concentration in oligoasthenospermic men.
A preliminary investigation was carried out in a hospital in the city of Lucknow, India, to provide information on the possible range of lead (Pb) exposure in pregnant women and fetuses, to correlate high Pb levels with various socioenvironmental factors, and to examine any possible association between reproductive outcome and Pb levels in this population. The results indicate that maternal blood lead levels were higher in those who experienced abnormal deliveries and in those who ate nonvegetarian diets or drank groundwater compared with the respective control groups. Placenta, cord blood, and fetal membranes from both normal and abnormal delivery cases showed no significant differences in their Pb content. Other socioenvironmental factors did not influence these Pb levels. However, incidence of higher Pb levels in maternal blood (17% and 38% with Pb > 25 micrograms/dl in normal and abnormal deliveries, respectively) and cord blood (> 10 micrograms/dl) reflect a need for regular monitoring and lowering of environmental Pb exposure.
BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of metastatic poorly differentiated rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in lymph node specimens by fine needle aspiration presents a difficult problem since it is virtually indistinguishable from other small round cell neoplasms. CASE: Fine needle aspiration was performed under radiologic guidance on an extradural, space-occupying lesion of unknown etiology in the region of the C-6 and C-7 vertebrae in a 20-year-old male who was hospitalized with quadriparesis. Cytologic examination suggested a metastatic tumor consistent with the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. A subsequent search for the primary tumor site revealed a soft tissue swelling in the right calf muscle. Light microscopic, ultrastructural and immunocytochemical examination of multiple Tru-cut biopsy specimens from the swelling in the right calf muscle confirmed the diagnosis of poorly differentiated embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. CONCLUSION: Immunostaining is useful for muscle proteins in the detection of poorly differentiated forms of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Electron microscopy is of limited use in such cases.
Postoperative muscle pains occurred in 16% of 25 patients given 10 mg diazepam IV 5 minutes prior to succinylcholine. Postoperative muscle pains occurred in 60% of 25 patients not given diazepam before succinylcholine. The difference is statistically significant. Diazepam reduced the severity and duration of postoperative muscle pains, as well as their frequency.
6MFA is a growth product of the fungus Aspergillus ochraceus (ATCC 28706) obtained by fermentation in stationary culture. It has both interferon inducing and antiviral properties, in vivo and in vitro, with a relatively high margin of safety (9, 17, 18). Ehrlich's ascites tumor bearing Swiss albino male mice were treated with 0.5 ml of acqueous preparation of 6MFA (0.75 mg total solids) i.p. in a therapeutic regimen schedule; the sham treated mice received only PBS. 6MFA treatment produced an increase in mean survival time over the untreated controls, restricted the body weight increase due to ascites and decreased the rate of mortality. As much as 100% of survival response was obtained in the group treated with 0.5 ml of 6MFA at the rate of one inoculation per week for 5 weeks. In general a dose-dependent response was seen in the antitumor effect of 6MFA against Ehrlich's ascites tumor in Swiss mice. Delay in administration of 6MFA to tumor bearing mice affected the survival rate.
A multivariate logistic model for measuring and comparing pneumoconiosis risk is described. In the first stage variables are screened on the basis of contributed variability via Pearson Chi Square statistic. Age, dust years and pack years so chosen as explanatory variables are fitted in the above model. The coefficients are estimated as linear discriminant function co-efficient. The model gives quite a good fit between observed and expected frequencies. Dust years discriminate maximum between the normal and pneumoconiosis group. Nearly sixty per cent of the variation is explained by these variables.

Adult male rabbits were subjected to vasectomy, tantalum clip occlusion and sham operations. Caput and cauda regions of epididymis were studied with electron microscope at intervals of 15 days and 15 months after operation. Vasectomized and clip occluded subjects revealed similar changes when compared with sham operated animals. The epithelium remained functionally active even after vasectomy and clip occlusion as indicated by the presence of all characteristic complements of cellular organelles. Increased number of vacuoles and electron dense bodies indicated enhanced absorptive and digestive mechanisms at 15 months of vasectomy and clip occlusion. Disposal of continuously producing spermatozoa following vas occlusion may take place by intraluminal disintegration of sperm and subsequent phagocytosis by epididymal epithelium as evidenced by presence of identifiable parts of spermatozoa and flocculent material in caput and cauda regions.
The Ultrastructural changes in testis and epididymis were studied in rabbits following 18 months of bilateral vasectomy. No fine structural changes were observed in seminiferous tubules and all stages of spermatogenesis appeared normal in most of the sample studied. Intracellular spaces in the spermatogonia cytoplasm may denote ionic deficiency. Digestion of sperms to some extent in the lumen of seminiferous tubules was denoted by the presence of round membrane bound bodies which may be remnants of digested cytoplasmic organelles and sperm parts. Cells of the epididymal epithelium showed normal characteristics. Electron dense bodies (lysosomes) were more prevalent in the supranuclear region of principal cells suggesting increased resorption capacity of caput epididymis after vasectomy. Presence of large oval bodies in the lumen needs further investigation.
The present study was carried out to determine the detailed histological and cytological features of the excurrent ducts of the male reproductive system in the rabbit. The rete testis is comprised of flattened epithelium surrounding a wide lumen which is devoid of spermatozoa. Vasaefferentia epithelium is comprised mainly of ciliated and non-ciliated cells and the lumen is devoid of sperms. On the basis of the characteristics of the epithelium, and luminal contents and histometric observations such as luminal diameter, epithelial cell height and stereocilia height, seven regions of epididymis were identified. Similarly, the vas deferens was identified into 3 regions; proximal, distal and terminal. Results were discussed bearing in mind the functional significance of different regions.

Multiple logistic regression model was used considering byssinosis as an independent variable, and dustiness, smoking, exposure years and age as explanatory variables. Dustiness and length of exposure to the dust were found to be the most important contributory factors to byssinosis prevalence. The risk of byssinosis among workers in card room, blow room and waste plant sections and those who had exposure of more than 5 years was nearly three times than that among workers of other sections of the mill and/or with less than 5 years of exposure.
