In a man aged 29 following thyroidectomy complicated by myxoedema an onychomycotic infection of long duration spread suddenly and fast onto the skin. A serious traffic accident coincided with the insidious onset of myxoedema. The patient was very irregular in taking medicines and continuously on sick pay. Myxoedema worsened and the ringworm progressed into a generalized ichthyosiform--universal mycotic--condition.
This paper presents a case with massive pulmonary embolism which has been successfully treated at the V.M.A. Belgrade. The diagnosis of massive pulmonary thromboembolism by right heart catheterization was confirmed and urgent surgery was performed. The pulmonary embolus was surgically removed under extra corporeal circulation, given successful reanimation and anesthesia. Postoperatively was treated by mechanical ventilation, inotropic drugs and anticoagulant therapy. The presentation of this case is justified because in well organized cardiosurgical units, the urgent surgery gives most satisfactory results.

We reviewed the results in eight patients followed from 10 months to 22 years after one-stage surgery for removal of primary and secondary myocardial and pericardial hydatid cysts. The results were satisfactory in eight patients who survived the operation. One patient, however, with recurrent myocardial echinococcosis, pulmonary embolization, and sepsis died at reoperation. The series was analyzed with reference to the surgical treatment and world-wide experience of complicated cardiac echinococcosis.
From 1965 to 1980, the authors accumulated vast experience by operating on 2500 diseased heart valves. Some of these patients had one, two, or three valves replaced. Among the two/three patients, there was a monovalvular problem in III, and more than half the patients with multivalvular problems in IV functional group NYHA. In group II there were only one/three patients with stenosis of the aortic valve. Because of the advanced stage of the disease among the group II patients, the following conditions were often present: heart insufficiency, manifest lung hypertension, cardiomegaly, and pronounced arrhythmia with damage to the kidneys. The risk in such cases is significantly greater. In total, 2941 valves were built. 74% had a normal postoperative recovery, 9,2% died; and 14,2% suffered complications that were remedied. Among the complications were insufficiency of the heart, arrhythmia, hemorrhage, transitory cerebral damage, and tracheobronchial infections. Thus, it can be seen that valve replacement as a treatment for significant hemodynamic disturbances is an effective method of surgical treatment. Improved results, reduction of complications, and few fatalities signal the advancement in such treatment.

Five patients with Hodgkin's disease (IV stage) were implanted with fetal human thymus. Implantation were performed under the fascia of rectus abdominis muscle. Thymuses were obtained from fetuses 4-5 month old in aseptic condition and stored in tissue culture medium 199, before implantation. Immunological studies carried out during 4-6 months, revealed the elevation of the number of the lymphocyte in the peripheral blood, normalization of the number of rosete forming cells (RFC) as well as the response of peripheral blood lymphocytes to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) stimulation. Two patients had long improvement of immunological responsiveness, but the other 3 only a transitient one during the first month after implantation. The possibility of the immunologic treatment in the early stages of Hodgkin's disease is discussed.
