Rapid cystic involvement of a lower third molar.
Cystic change can occur in association with partially and unerupted lower third molars. This case report describes an inflammatory paradental cyst which developed over a relatively short period of time and presented with acute symptoms.

Transient uniocular blindness after dental extraction under general anaesthetic.
A 14-year-old boy suffered transient uniocular blindness after extraction of four permanent first molar teeth under general anaesthetic. We discuss the theoretical basis for ocular vasospasm secondary to the minor trauma of dental extraction being relayed to the orbit.

An interesting case of adult facial gangrene (from Papua, New Guinea).
A case of a nomalike lesion occurring in an elderly woman is described. The patient was admitted to the hospital in a debilitated state and was undergoing supportive management when the facial condition developed. Because of the rapidly progressing nature of the lesion, apparently emanating from the alveolar soft tissues, a diagnosis of cancrum oris was made. Although progression of the lesion was halted following institution of an appropriate therapeutic regimen, the patient's general condition deteriorated and she finally died 12 days after admission. The exact nature of the underlying systemic condition was never diagnosed.

Surgical forceps techniques.
This paper considers two new elevator and dental forceps techniques for the atraumatic removal of teeth to avoid a surgical procedure where possible. The techniques described should be applicable in relatively well defined but commonly occurring situations. The two techniques involve the unconventional use of conventional dental extraction forceps, with the aim of facilitating removal of the retained roots of certain teeth: the first for incisors, canines and premolars and the second for lower first molars. The term 'surgical forceps technique's is tentatively put forward as a description of these hybrid procedures.
