A randomized sample of 1392 girls and boys, 16 to 20 years old and living in the canton of Geneva have been studied through their own history, clinically and radiologically in 1970-72 during an epidemiological and socio-economical study. The rate of alveolar bone resorption (radiographic method of Marshall-Day and Shourie, with Schei grid), the degree of gingival inflammation (PM index), the oral health (OHI-S index) and the carious frequency (DMFS index) have been determined. For the same sample, an indication of the duration of caries prevention through fluoride tablets, the frequency of daily toothbrushing and the dento-facial anomalies (Angle classes) were known. Through statistical analysis, it was shown that the mean rate of alveolar resorption was 0.85 (standard deviation 1,99) for the whole sample, that 24,16% of the subjects had a zero rate, 90% of the children having a rate of no more than 3,74 and that the maximum observed rate was 20. On the other hand, this bone resorption rate was statistically significantly correlated with the PM index and the OHI-S index. However no significant correlation has been shown between alveolar resorption and the other oral characteristics such as carious attack, toothbrushing, duration of caries prevention, dento-facial anomalies.

InterRett, International Rett Syndrome Association (IRSA) Rett Phenotype Database, is a unique international project funded by the IRSA, which brings together child neurologists, geneticists, paediatricians, epidemiologists, researchers and families of affected children. The principal aim of InterRett is to increase the clinical understanding of Rett syndrome throughout the world and with the statistical power of large case numbers, determine any correlations between genotype and the phenotypic characteristics. Since establishment of the database in January 2003, InterRett has registered 286 cases from 24 countries, with family questionnaire data submitted on 242 cases and clinician data on 116 cases. Collated de-identified data gathered from families and clinicians have been incorporated into a searchable online database allowing simple and complex interrogation of the clinical phenotype information. InterRett will also serve as a clearing house for data to encourage inter-country collaboration between researchers and negotiations are in place with several countries for data contributions in excess of 1000 cases. The resulting online database will be an invaluable resource for understanding the nature and management of Rett syndrome, as well as providing a model for other rare childhood disorders.
To identify retinoic acid (RA) signalling pathways involved in growth and differentiation in cells of the glial lineage, two human glioma ceh lines were studied. The three RA receptors (RARs) mRNAs were constitutively expressed, and of the three RXRs, RXR beta appeared predominant. Western blotting analysis confirmed the constitutive expression of RAR alpha and RAR beta. Treatment with all-trans-RA induced morphological changes in the two cell lines, which progressed from their normal pattern of randomly oriented spindle-shaped cells to fibroblast-like glial cells. RA up-regulated RAR alpha and RAR beta mRNAs in both cell lines. Interestingly, RA treatment up-regulated RAR beta proteins but not RAR alpha proteins, suggesting post-transcriptional regulations of RAR transcripts in glioma cells.
The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of Salmonella serotypes at two different sites on pig carcasses from herds classified as high-risk or low-risk and to elucidate the relationship between carcass contamination levels and serological status. Caecal samples and carcass surface swabs were cultured for Salmonella from a total of 210 pigs from low risk herds (< 19% of pigs in herd Salmonella seropositive) and 209 pigs from high risk herds (> 32% of pigs in herd Salmonella seropositive) in three abattoirs. Meat juice samples were collected for analysis by ELISA. The prevalence of Salmonella in the caecal contents of "low-risk" pigs was 10%, which was significantly lower than the 19% prevalence in "high-risk" pigs (p < 0.01). The corresponding figures for skin samples collected immediately post-evisceration were 2% and 12%. The predominant Salmonella serotype in the caecal contents of both the low-risk and high-risk pigs was Salmonella Typhimurium. Salmonella Kentucky and Salmonella Derby were the most frequent isolates from the carcass surface swabs of low- and high-risk pigs respectively. There was a positive association between seropositivity of pigs from high-risk herds and caecal carriage (p < 0.05). Results showed that herd categorisation based on serological results was useful in predicting Salmonella isolation rates from caecal samples and surface swabs of slaughtered pigs.
The association between primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and cutaneous vasculitides is well recognized. Pustular skin lesions though, have been described in association with hepatobiliary diseases other than PBC. Once the more common infective pustular rashes have been excluded, the differential diagnoses for a pustular skin rash are acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), Sweet's Syndrome (SS), pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) and pustular vasculitis(PV). We present a case of pustular vasculitis associated with PBC.
