Contact application of Nd:YAG laser through a fiberoptic and a sapphire tip.

We evaluated the effects of Nd:YAG laser energy directly applied to ocular tissue through a fiberoptic and a sapphire tip. All ocular tissue could be easily cut with the maximum 4 watts of energy. The coagulated borders extended 20 to 200 mu into the healthy tissue depending on the speed with which the cutting was performed.

Immunohistochemical demonstration of peptide YY in gastrointestinal endocrine tumors.

Fourteen cases of gastrointestinal endocrine tumors were examined immunohistochemically for peptide YY, pancreatic polypeptide, glucagon, and somatostatin. Peptide YY cells were present in seven tumors, pancreatic polypeptide cells in eight tumors, glucagon cells in six tumors, and somatostatin cells in nine tumors. All 7 rectal endocrine tumors examined were found to contain peptide YY, while in the tumors of the other sites peptide YY cells were not detected. Peptide YY cell population in the rectal tumors was small to moderate in comparison with pancreatic polypeptide and glucagon cell population. This study suggests that peptide YY cells may be a common constituent of rectal endocrine tumors together with pancreatic polypeptide and glucagon cells, and that the peptide YY spectrum of gastrointestinal endocrine tumors may be closely related to the location of the tumors. Moreover, it can also be said that peptide YY may be used as one of the markers of rectal endocrine tumors.

Dye orange and argon green laser photocoagulation effects on the retina and vitreoretinal interface.

We evaluated the effects of dye orange (595 nm) and argon green (514.5 nm) laser energy on the retina and the retinal internal limiting membrane. Moderate retinal coagulation was produced with each wavelength on the macular area of the monkey retina. Acute lesions demonstrated coagulative necrosis of the outer sensory retina, retinal pigment epithelium and choroid. The chronic lesions showed no morphologic evidence of alteration on the retinal surface by scanning electron microscopy. Our study indicated that moderate laser coagulation with these laser energies does not damage the vitreoretinal interface.

[Transrectal longitudinal ultrasonography of the prostate by electronic linear scanning (1)].

Transrectal longitudinal ultrasonography of the prostate was done for 20 patients with prostatic diseases, 12 with benign prostatic hypertrophy, 6 with bladder neck contracture, and 2 with chronic prostatitis. The intravesical protrusion of the prostate and the opening of the bladder neck, which can be easily recognized by this method, were discussed in relation to dysuria, using subjective symptoms, residual urine, and uroflowmetry (peak flow rate) as parameters. The former was slightly correlated to dysuria, and the latter was definitely correlated to dysuria.

Transscleral and intravitreal contact Nd:YAG laser application. An experimental study.

A contact Nd:YAG laser with a sapphire tip (convex surface 2 mm in diameter) was used to coagulate the retina and ciliary body through the sclera. The laser energy was successfully transmitted through the sclera, producing retinal coagulation and destruction of the ciliary body. A 0.2-mm diameter sapphire tip and Nd:YAG laser were used to perform transvitreal retinal coagulation, retinotomy, and retinochoroidal incision. Minimal hemorrhage occurred when retinochoroidotomy was done. Probe-tissue adhesion occurred but could easily be separated.

[Clinical studies on doxycycline in the treatment of nongonococcal urethritis by Chlamydia trachomatis].

Twenty-one nongonococcal urethritis patients by Chlamydia trachomatis infection were treated with doxycycline (DOXY, Vibramycin) 200 mg/day orally for 2 weeks. The age of these patients were ranged from 17 to 52. C. trachomatis was eradicated 8(89%) of 9 cases on 3rd day and never reisolated on 7th day after treatment. Ten (83%) of 12 patients on 7th day and any patients on 14th day were not suffered from symptoms after treatment. Urethral discharge was not seen macroscopically, 11 (92%) of 12 patients on 7th day and any patients on 14th day. According to the criteria for urethritis requiring at least 4 WBC per high power field in urethral smear and/or first voided urine, the overall clinical efficacy rate was 44% (4/9) on 3rd day, 83% (10/12) on 7th day and 100% (9/9) on 14th day. No side effects were recognized in any cases. In conclusion, DOXY was thought to be useful and safe drug in the treatment of nongonococcal urethritis by C. trachomatis.

[A study of cases of early gastric cancer with hematemesis and/or melena].

In this hospital, gastric cancers showed a slightly lower incidence (9.3%) of hematemesis and/or melena than gastric ulcers (13.9%), and no distinct difference in such incidence between early gastric cancers and advanced gastric cancers was observed. A study of the literature on early gastric cancers presenting such symptoms revealed that male patients showed an extremely high incidence of these symptoms, as did those with depressed lesions, including types II c + III, and lesions occurring in the MC-C regions dominated by the left gastric artery.
