Salicylazosulphapyridine-induced Heinz body anemia.

A 58-year-old patient suffered from severe malabsorption due to agammaglobulinemia. Treated empirically with salicylazosulfapyridine 2--6 g/day, the subjective and objective features of malabsorption regressed. About a year after this treatment she developed a generalized weakness without renewal of the diarrhea; the diagnosis of Heinz body hemolytic anemia was established. In our patient, hemolysis began many months after the commencement of treatment and no deficiency of G6PD or other erythrocyte enzyme or pathological hemoglobin were found.

Aseptic necrosis of head of femur: presenting manifestation in Cushing's disease.

Aseptic necrosis of bone is a known complication of corticosteroid therapy. We report a case of aseptic necrosis of the femoral head as a presenting symptom of Cushing's disease. The case demonstrates that endogenous steroids, like exogenous steroids, may bear the same relationship to the pathogenesis of aseptic necrosis of bone. It also indicates that Cushing's disease must be considered in every case of so-called idiopathic aseptic necrosis of bone.

Prosthetic valve endocarditis due to Mycobacterium chelonei.

Postoperative prosthetic valve endocarditis due to Mycobacterium chelonei occurred in a man after replacement of the aortic valve. The organism was isolated from blood cultures and from vegetations taken postmortem from the edge of the inserted valve. This is believed to be the first documented report of a mycobacterial endocarditis.

Differential patterns of drug involvement among Israeli youth.

The present study tries to link some demographic, social, psycholoogical and attitudinal variables of drug abuse. The findings were centred around the readiness of secondary school youth in Israel to be involved in drugs and their active searching for drug involvement. A dependent variable based on five indices of drug involvement was constructed. It was then related to parental control, peer involvement in drugs, sex differentiation and membership in youth movements. A bi-modal high involvement curve was found, the first mode consisting of youth of low socio-economic strata who are drop-outs, who associate with outside peer groups as an alternative to their shaky and diffused families and lack of involvement in school life. The other mode consists of youth with a higher socio-economic background who are involved with drugs due to their desire for new hedonistic and emotional experiences. Their openness to experiment with drugs is a corollary to their involvement within a peer group which condones and legitimizes narcotics as well as any experiences which irrespective of their source, provide "a good high". There is a sub-group within this group which would be involved with drugs as a partial escape from personal problems.
