Left-arm dominance in active positioning.

The relative accuracy of the left and the right arms in active positioning was studied in a group of 24 male right-handed undergraduates. The task required active positioning of the left and right arms at each of the four angular positions (30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, and 75 degrees). The left arm was more accurate in active positioning than the right arm. There was a progressive increase in error for both arms as the arms flexed more in reducing the angle at the joint. Results are discussed in light of suggestions concerning the superiority of the right hemisphere in the processing of kinesthetic and proprioceptive information.

A report on six cases of histoid variety of lepromatous leprosy in children.

Six cases of histoid variety of lepromatous leprosy among children below 12 years of age were detected in over 3 years period. Bacteriological index was high (3 to 5+). None of the patients had received any anti-leprosy treatment. It is a public health problem because of infectious nature of the disease, therefore early detection and management of this entity among children is important.

A morphologic and autoradiographic study of cell death and regeneration in the retinal microvasculature of normal and diabetic rats.

Cell loss and regeneration were investigated and compared in the retinal microvasculature of age- and sex-matched normal and streptozotocin diabetic rats. Selective pericyte loss in the diabetic rat was characterized by changes in the pericyte to endothelial cell ratio in retinal capillaries isolated for microscopy by the trypsin digest technique. A comparison of 3- and 9-month-old normal rats showed no significant change in the pericyte to endothelial cell ratio (1:2.7). In diabetic animals the ratio was reduced to 1:4.03, which was statistically significant (P less than .001). Premitotic retinal vascular cells in normal and diabetic rats were labelled with tritiated thymidine and the labelling indices calculated from cell counts of trypsin digest preparations. Methyl H3 thymidine was infused continuously over an eight-day period using osmotic mini pumps. The labelling index of endothelial cells (0.33%) in normal rats increased to 0.91% in diabetic animals (P less than .05). The labelling index of pericyte cells in normal animals (0.16%) did not increase significantly (P greater than .05) in diabetic animals (0.19%). A special stain was used to exclude labelled polymorphonuclear leukocytes from the cell counts.

Acid mucopolysaccharides in leprosy lesions.

Uniform accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides in all types of leprosy lesions was seen, except late tuberculoid lesions which showed the accumulation only at the periphery. Absence of acid mucopolysaccharides was significant in well formed epithelioid granulomas and in giant cells of late tuberculoid cases. Generally a progressive decrease with advancing chronicity of the disease was noted. The dermal zone without any cellular infiltrate showed abundant acid mucopolysaccharides in comparison to those areas having inflammatory cell infiltrate in 70.83% of LL, 42.86% of BL, 33.3% of BB, 40.0% of BT, and 13.51% of TT cases. In Indeterminate cases the distribution was same to that of control cases. Testicular hyaluronidase digestion established that hyaluronic acid constituted the main bulk of acid mucopolysaccharides. The possible source of hyaluronic acid is discussed.

Predicting the dose of warfarin for therapeutic anticoagulation.

The validity of a previously described technique for predicting warfarin requirements based on the anticoagulant response to a fixed loading dose was assessed prospectively in 57 patients. There was a close relationship between the predicted and initially observed daily warfarin dose required to maintain the patient within the therapeutic range for anticoagulation. The significant relationship between predicted and observed maintenance dose persisted at 4 and 12 weeks although it decreased with increasing time. The relationship between observed and predicted maintenance requirement of warfarin was not affected by the concomitant use of intermittent intravenous injections of heparin when 9 hr was allowed to elapse between the previous dose of heparin and the thrombotest estimation on which the prediction was based. It is concluded that the method is valuable in predicting an individual's warfarin requirement, although it does not obviate the need for regular monitoring of anticoagulant control.

Genetic predisposition to renal stone disease in the first-degree relatives of stone-formers.

Stone formers, their spouses and first-degree relatives have been investigated for hypercalciuria and crystalluria. The incidence of hypercalciuria was far greater in stone-formers and their first-degree relatives than in their spouses. The urine of the stone-formers and their first-degree relatives contained calcium oxalate crystals in greater number and of larger size than that of the spouses or the controls. It was concluded that the predisposition to renal stone disease was far greater in those who shared the genetic pattern of stone-formers than those who shared their environmental conditions only.

Morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

Most studies indicate that diabetics have both a higher mortality rate and a higher morbidity rate secondary to generalized vascular occlusive disease than non-diabetic patients of corresponding age and sex. There is also some evidence that diabetics with proliferative retinopathy are more at risk than diabetics without retinopathy. This study was undertaken to determine and compare the morbidity and mortality rates in diabetics with: (a) No retinopathy, (b) Background retinopathy, (c) Proliferative retinopathy. The records and fundus photographs of 800 diabetics were reviewed and the data statistically analysed according to age, sex, presence and type of retinopathy, morbidity, and mortality. The mortality rates were also compared with the normal population life study data.
