Considerations on the sinus node microangioarchitecture.

The importance of the sinus node as the cardiac pacemaker is well known. The aim of the present study was to investigate the microangioarchitecture at the level of the sinus node. Ten human adult hearts were injected with India ink in the initial segments of the coronary arteries. Pieces were drawn and diaphanized. The results of the study can be summarized: (1) the sinus node is rather an irregularly shaped structure, with peripheral strands intermingling with strands of the atrial myocardium; at this level two vascular patterns can be recognized: (a) the myocardial capillary networks that parallels the muscular bundles, and (b) the peripheral nodal networks built upon dichotomizing arterioles; (2) it seems that while the thick and large sinus node artery does not branch in the nodal tissue, the blood supply of this tissue is ensured by the peripheral nodal networks; (3) characteristically, in the periphery of the nodal tissue are largely present glomeruli made by capillaries with pericellular dispositions. The results strongly suggest that the nodal tissue is mainly supplied from its periphery and the sinus node artery is rather a scaffold than a supplier of that tissue.

Considerations on the left papillary muscles microangioarchitecture.

The aim of the present study was to bring macroscopic and microscopic evidence on the left papillary muscles blood supply in human hearts. For the study were used human adult hearts from patients without clinically known cardiac ischemic history. Ten hearts were used for injecting China ink in the coronary arteries and other twenty hearts were dissected to evidence the characteristics of the main arteries of the left papillary muscles. Pieces - left papillary muscles - were drawn from the injected hearts and diaphanised. In all dissected hearts the left anterolateral papillary muscles were supplied by the left coronary system: anterior interventricular artery, second diagonal branch and left (obtuse) marginal artery. In 70% the left posteromedial papillary muscles were supplied by the right coronary system (posterior interventricular artery, left retroventricular artery) and in 30% by the left coronary system (circumflex artery). The left papillary muscles were supplied each by one or two main arteries that penetrated the muscles longitudinally. The ventricular wall attaching the papillary muscles was supplied by the subepicardial vessel sending the main arteries of the papillary muscles but also by neighbor subepicardial vessels distributed in that wall. The mural vessels were finer than the papillary muscles main arteries. Injected papillary muscles presented each with two systems of blood perfusion: one represented by segmental centers of arterial branching and distribution of the main arteries of the muscle and other represented by capillary extensions of the mural networks at that level. From the segmental branching centers were perfused the neighbor segments of the papillary muscles and intrasegmental anastomoses were recognized. The microvascular study of the left papillary muscles proves the usual overlapping of sources for segmental supply; this overlapping is reinforced by the high capillary density to ensure the vascularisation of the papillary muscles.

Viral contamination of some drinking waters in Romania: a twenty years survey.

A synthesis is made on the 20 years virological survey of the drinking water from some towns of Romania. The sampling of the water was made by the gauze-pad method. The virus concentration method by adsorption-elution with the yeast cells was applied concomitantly, at first with the PE60 method, then, during the last years, either with aluminum hydroxide or with the polymer PV methods, and the concentrates were inoculated both into suckling mice and into cell cultures. Various types of coxsackievirus A and B, poliovirus and adenovirus were detected. The proportions of positive samples varied between 0 and 25% annually, in diverse towns, the mean proportion being 2.1%. These proportions are relative low, although two concentrating and two detecting methods were applied concomitantly.

[Detection of enteroviruses in seawater and beach sand].

In the years from 1975 to 1978 investigations were carried out to detect enteroviruses in the sea-water and in the sand of the beaches of the Rumanian Black Sea coast, in zones with and without waste water discharge. The quantities of enteroviruses found in the seawater and in the sand of the beaches were lower than those verified in other countries. For the identification of viruses we used two concentration methods simultaneously (polyelectrolyte PE60 Monsanto USA and brewer's yeast cells) as well as two methods of isolation (in cell cultures and with newborn mice). The incidence of enteroviruses depended on the season, with no viruses present in the sea-water and in the sand of the beaches during the periods considered to be outside the holidaying season. The discharge of purified sewage into the sea was not attended by considerable viral contamination of the sea-water and of the beaches.

Viral pollution of some artificial reservoirs in Romania.

Five reservoirs were investigated for the presence of enteroviruses by using simultaneously two methods for concentration (PE60 and yeast cells) and two techniques for isolation (inoculation into suckling mice and into cell cultures). The average rate of virus positive samples was lower in reservoir water than in the water of the adjoined rivers. The paper discusses the possibilities of viral self-purification in reservoir water and the advantages of its use for drinking purposes after adequate treatment.

Enteric viruses in the Danube river water and sludge.

A study of the viral pollution of the Roumanian course of the Danube river was carried out from 1972 to 1974. The presence of enteric viruses was investigated in 123 water samples, taken by the gauze swab method and in 116 sludge samples from the bottom of the river. The samples were collected from 20 sampling points along the river from Moldova Veche to Brăila, in accordance with the water use and the main pollution sources. Viruses were recovered from 17.5% of the samples. The frequency of virus isolations from water samples was similar to that observed in sludge samples. Therefore, the viral pollution of the Romanian course of the Danube showed a low level in comparison with other rivers, though two concentration techniques into suckling mice and into tissue cultures, were used for each sample.

[Incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in diabetics (author's transl)].

Diabetics are particularly prone to tuberculosis, For this reason, radiological examination of the lungs must be carried out every half year. Chemoprophylactic therapy with INH should always be instituted even with the smallest apical changes. Glycemic equilibrium is essential for the success of antituberculous chemotherapy, and it must be achieved in every tuberculous diabetic.
