Respiratory symptoms and lung function disturbances in a polluted area of the Netherlands, compared with a rural area.

In an epidemiological field survey of CNSLD 1800 men and women aged 15-64 were studied in a rural area and an industrial area. In each person a standardized interview, lung function tests, cardiac examinations, analysis of the phlegm and chest X-ray were performed. The interview conducted with the standard questionnaire gives very good information regarding chronic effects of smoking and atmospheric pollution. Spirometry seems to be a sensitive method for registering an acute disturbances caused by air pollution.

Biphasic reaction after inhalation of Haemophilus influenzae in patients with chronic nonspecific lung disease.

In patients with chronic nonspecific lung disease (CNSLD), who had precipitins against Haemophilus influenzae (HI), a biphasic bronchial obstructive reaction is described after inhalation of killed HI bacteria. There was an early obstructive reaction, occurring immediately after the inhalation and lasting for 1 hr, followed by a late reaction, which started 5-6 hr after the inhalation and lasted for about 8 hr. The late reaction was accompanied by fever, malaise and leucocytosis. The difference in reaction after HI inhalation in five patients and two controls, and the effect of protection with sodium cromoglycate and prednisolone are discussed.

Determination of low cencentrations of the quaternary ammonium compound thiazinamium methylsulphate in plasma and urine.

A sensitive and selective method for the quantitative determination of the quaternary ammonium antiacetylcholine-compound thiazinamium methylsulphate (Multergan) in plasma and urine is described. The procedure is based on ion pair extraction of the compound with iodide as the counter ion. This is followed by gas chromatography using an alkali flame ionization detector. The detection limit is 2 ng ml-1 with a recovery of 88-0 +/- 6-2% from plasma, 91-4 +/- 4-6% from urine. The described method can also be applied to other quaternary ammonium compounds.
