Program for increasing enrollment of early acceptees in medical school.

Early acceptees by medical schools generally have higher Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores and grade-point averages than those accepted later. Between 1977 and 1979, the number of these individuals actually enrolling at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Rutgers Medical School (UMDNJ-RMS) declined from 20.4 to 6.5 percent of all incoming medical students. This prompted the development in 1980 of a one-day, preenrollment program informing early acceptees about the UMDNJ-RMS educational program. Subsequently, more than 40 percent of the early acceptees have enrolled at the UMDNJ-RMS, and this noticeable increase appears to be related directly to the program.

Flight, orientation, and homing abilities of honeybees following exposure to 2.45-GHz CW microwaves.

Foraging-experienced honeybees retained normal flight, orientation, and memory functions after 30 minutes' exposure to 2.45-GHz CW microwaves at power densities from 3 to 50 mW/cm2. These experiments were conducted at power densities approximating and exceeding those that would be present above receiving antennas of the proposed solar power satellite (SPS) energy transmission system and for a duration exceeding that which honeybees living outside a rectenna might be expected to spend within the rectenna on individual foraging trips. There was no evidence that airborne invertebrates would be significantly affected during transient passage through microwaves associated with SPS ground-based microwave receiving stations.

Longevity and food consumption of microwave-treated (2.45 GHz CW) honeybees in the laboratory.

Adult honeybees, confined singly or in small clusters, were exposed for 0.5, 6, and 24 hours to 2.45-GHz continuous wave microwave radiation at power densities of 3, 6, 12, 25, and 50 mW/cm2. Following exposure, bees were held in the incubator for 21 days to determine the consumption of sucrose syrup and to observe mortality. No significant differences were found between microwave-treated and sham-treated or control bees.

Diuretics↗

Indomethacin-associated acute renal failure.

A 61 year old man experienced oliguric acute renal failure during therapy with indomethacin. Proteinuria (5.1 g/24 hours) and hypertension, which accompanied renal insufficiency, cleared with recovery of function. These features may suggest drug-associated acute kidney failure.

Acute Kidney Injury↗

Heparin allergy accompanying acute renal failure.

A generalized cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to a porcine heparin preparation was observed in a patient during the course of acute renal failure. Immunological studies, including gel diffusion and immunoelectrophoresis, suggested that the reaction was to a contaminant of the heparin and involved both IgG and IgE antibodies.
