Electrn microscopic observations on virus-like particles associated with SH antigen.

The structural aspects of SH antigen-containing particles were investigated. These studies confirmed the existence of a large spherical particle (ca. 43 nm) and smaller (ca. 20 nm) rod- and sphere-shaped particles. The large particle consists of an outer and inner membrane and a core of "nucleic acid" as seen by positive staining techniques. The outer membrane of the large particle appears to be similar to that of the 20-nm diameter spheres and rods known to possess the SH antigen.

The production of calcium and magnesium during pancreatic function tests in health and disease.

Duodenal calcium and magnesium concentrations after pancreatic stimulation were measured in 25 patients with and without pancreatic disease. The concentration of both ions was higher in those with pancreatic disease, and furthermore these patients showed a different secretory pattern. These findings may be relevant to the aetiology of pancreatitis and to pancreatic calcification, and might be of diagnostic value.

Determination of vitamin B 12 absorption by a simple whole body counter.

This paper reports the results of estimating vitamin B(12) absorption by whole body counting in patients without known gastrointestinal disorder, and in patients with pernicious anaemia, idiopathic achlorhydria, achlorhydria following gastric operations, and various forms of small intestinal disease. Patients with pernicious anaemia absorbed less than 30% of the test dose; they could be distinguished from patients without gastrointestinal abnormality and from most achlorhydric patients who secreted more than 300 mg units of intrinsic factor in the post-histamine hour. Nevertheless, the wide range of normal absorption and the variable absorption from the normal gastrointestinal tract is emphasized and discussed. There is no relation between histamine-stimulated intrinsic factor production and vitamin B(12) absorption in patients with small intestinal disease.
