Preliminary data on the encapsulation of biologically active materials in liposomes.

Multilamellar and unilamellar phospholipid liposomes were prepared and investigated as regards their properties and the capacity of encapsulating biologically active materials, such as CrO4-(2-)ions, basic dyes, proteins, DNA, as well as Sendai virus particles. The efficiency of encapsulation ranged from 10% for CrO4-(2-)ions to about 80% for toluidine blue; it was found to depend not only on the type of encapsulated material, but also on the method used for liposome preparation and on liposome composition.

Remarks on the pathogenic significance of HBsAg subtypes.

The frequent controversies concerning the possible different pathogenic significance of antigenic hepatitis B virus subtypes determined the authors to analyse the mean values of some biochemical tests in two groups of acute viral hepatitis patients. The results obtained show that a more marked alteration of these values is correlated with the presence of HBsAg/ay in one of the groups (89 patients) and with that of HBsAg/ad in the other group (33 patients). Some explanations of these findings are suggested.

Incidence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in some areas of Romania.

The incidence of HBsAg in several areas of Romania was studied by 253,460 routine determinations performed from 1973 to 1975. HBsAg incidence was of 1.5% in blood donors and reached the highest value in acute viral hepatitis patients undifferentiated according to the clinical form. The values obtained were in agreement with the results of other studies covering more limited zones of the country. Considerable differences in HBsAg incidence depending on geographic area were observed.

[The repair of voluminous postoperative abdominal wall defects with synthetic mesh].

Important postoperative abdominal wall defects, especially recurrent or multirecidivated ones, are raising multiple problems to the surgeon. We are presenting a homogeneous trial of 209 patients with such lesions, in which the abdominal wall repair was made with different kind of synthetic materials, with good results. In a single case the mesh was rejected, because a silent quiescent infection. In three patients undergoing iterative abdominal operations for other diseases we performed optical and electronic microscopical studies showing out that the material integration was done by normal biological reaction. This provides the materials' tolerability and a normal reaction of the organism.
