[Definitive radical radiotherapy in tumors of the prostate. Analysis of statistics].

The records were analyzed of 50 patients treated by definitive external beam irradiation for carcinoma of the prostate in the Oncologic Radiotherapy Department of the "Ospedali Riuniti" of Bergamo, Italy, from January 1981 to December 1985. Our series of patients included 22 cases of stage B and 28 cases of stage C tumors. The actuarial 5-year survival rates, according to the Kaplan-Meier method, were for the whole group 69.9%; 79.5% and 54.9% for stage B and stage C tumors respectively. Relationships were also analyzed of tumor control and survival to stage, grading, and total dose of radiations. The recent increasing interest is explained in the use of radiation therapy in the treatment of this kind of patients. A special emphasis is put on the role of CT in determining both field size and dose distribution, and on the use of high-voltage energy in order to make treatment more technically reliable and reduce its morbidity.

Cysteamine protection of SCEs induced by UV and fluorescent light.

CHO cells were grown for 36 h in the presence of BUDR. 12 h before harvesting, the cells were irradiated with UV or with fluorescent (FL) light. Part of the cultures were treated with cysteamine (Cys) during irradiation. Metaphase spreads were stained by the Hoechst-plus-Giemsa method, and the frequency of SCEs per chromosome was determined in second-mitosis cells. The basal frequency of SCEs (1.07 +/- 0.073) was not increased by Cys treatment (1.15 +/- 0.048). On the other hand, UV and FL induced a 3-4-fold increase in the frequency of exchanges (4.18 +/- 0.2 and 3.32 +/- 0.12 resp.). Cys, when present during irradiation, markedly reduced the frequency of UV- and FL-induced SCEs (2.7 +/- 0.14 and 2.29 +/- 0.11 resp.). It is assumed that Cys prevents the formation of radiation-induced breakages in the BUDR-substituted DNA. The residual increase over the basal levels of SCEs which remains after the treatment with Cys may be due to the persistence of some open breaks, to the presence of protein-DNA crosslinking, or to the combined action of both types of lesion.

Overhead electricity power lines and childhood leukemia: a registry-based, case-control study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: To evaluate the role of exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields generated by overhead power lines on the risk of childhood leukemia, we carried out a case-control study in the area (Varese province) covered by the Lombardy Cancer Registry. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Exposure to magnetic fields was estimated using line load data and the distance between subjects' homes and the nearest power line. A total of 101 cases and 412 controls were investigated. RESULTS: Twenty subjects (9 cases and 11 controls) were considered exposed. A significant fourfold increase in risk for leukemia in exposed subjects and a dose-response relationship were found. The risk was higher than that reported by other studies. Potential biases related to the representativity of controls and validity of exposure assessment do not seem to have influenced the risk estimates. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that measures to remedy residential exposure should be taken wherever practicable.

[Evaluation of the occupational exposure risk to non-ionizing radiation in the working environment in a metal mechanical industry].

Among the various sources of risk present in a metal engineering industry, it is important to take into account the risk related to non ionizing radiations. New technologies, in fact, use radiations in different equipment to an ever increasing extent. It is therefore important, on the basis of the current regulations, to carry out a census, since the frequencies used in the workplaces vary widely. It is also important to measure exposure, in order to limit access areas, but, above all, to measure personal doses, since it is useful to record the personal doses in view of the uncertain regulation and in connection with exposure levels lower than the reference in order to limit non-stochastic effects, as was shown in our study. Information and training of personnel, health surveillance and the specific observation of critical groups of workers, are also of fundamental importance.
