Practical use of a word processor in a histopathology laboratory.

Some of the facilities available with a commercially purchased word processing program, linked to a DEC PDP 11/23 computer are described, together with an account of the practical histopathological use. The system is based on a share of the computer with a Clinical Chemistry Department. Development was time-consuming and required the constant availability of the Department of Physics. However, once working, considerable saving in secretarial time has resulted and a number of projects have been started which would not have been contemplated without the use of the word processor and its linked computer.

Benign thyroid inclusions within cervical lymph nodes: an alarming incidental finding.

Small clusters of microscopically normal thyroid follicles within cervical lymph nodes are very occasionally encountered during histological examination. We support the view that provided the thyroid gland is not palpable and a technetium thyroid scan is normal, these should be regarded as benign thyroid inclusions and do not represent small metastatic lesions from thyroid carcinoma. We report an example of these inclusions in a cervical lymph node which was removed incidentally during the excision of a branchial cyst in a 25-year-old woman. The inclusion was too small to be noticed macroscopically and consisted of a small aggregation of histologically normal thyroid follicles situated in the subcapsular region of the lymph node.

Congenital oesophageal stenosis caused by tracheobronchial structures in the oesophageal wall.

Congenital oesophageal stenosis caused by heterotopic cartilage and other tracheobronchial structures in the oesophageal wall is a very rare condition. The first case was described by Frey and Duschl in 1936, and only 16 further cases have been reported since that date. We report two further cases of the anomaly. The first, like the majority described previously, was an isolated defect in an otherwise normal child. The second was associated with an oesophageal atresia with a tracheooesophageal fistula and multiple developmental anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract.

Long-term study of flunisolide treatment in perennial rhinitis with special reference to nasal mucosal histology and morphology.

Ten patients with allergic perennial rhinitis completed a 3-month course of reatment with flunisolide nasal spray. Biopsy of the nasal mucosa was carried out before the initiation of treatment and at the end of the treatment period. The flunisolilde was administered as a 0.025% solution twice daily at a total daily dose of 200 micrograms. No histological abnormalities which could have been attributed to the effects of the drug were found in the post-treatment biopsies. Comparison of the pre- and post-treatment histological features showed either that there had been no apparent changes or that there had been a reduction in the oedema and/or cellular infiltration which had been present initially. All except one patient improved clinically and in this case the pre-treatment nasal biopsy demonstrated features of atrophic rhinitis.
