Observation of random-phase lattice solitons.

The coherence of waves in periodic systems (lattices) is crucial to their dynamics, as interference effects, such as Bragg reflections, largely determine their propagation. Whereas linear systems allow superposition, nonlinearity introduces a non-trivial interplay between localization effects, coupling between lattice sites, and incoherence. Until recently, all research on solitary waves (solitons) in nonlinear lattices has involved only coherent waves. In such cases, linear dispersion or diffraction of wave packets can be balanced by nonlinear effects, resulting in coherent lattice (or 'discrete') solitons; these have been studied in many branches of science. However, in most natural systems, waves with only partial coherence are more common, because fluctuations (thermal, quantum or some other) can reduce the correlation length to a distance comparable to the lattice spacing. Such systems should support random-phase lattice solitons displaying distinct features. Here we report the experimental observation of random-phase lattice solitons, demonstrating their self-trapping and local periodicity in real space, in addition to their multi-peaked power spectrum in momentum space. We discuss the relevance of such solitons to other nonlinear periodic systems in which fluctuating waves propagate, such as atomic systems, plasmas and molecular chains.

Spontaneous pattern formation with incoherent white light.

We present the first experimental observation of modulation instability and spontaneous pattern formation with incoherent white light emitted from an incandescent light bulb. We show experimentally that modulation instability of white light propagating in a noninstantaneous self-focusing medium is a collective effect, where the entire temporal spectrum of the light beam becomes unstable at the same threshold value and collectively forms a pattern with a single periodicity. We experimentally demonstrate that the temporal spectrum of the evolving perturbation self-adjusts to match the collective pattern formation phenomenon.

Grating-mediated waveguiding.

We propose a method of optical waveguiding, which relies on Bragg diffractions from a 1D grating that gives rise to waveguiding in the direction normal to the grating wave vector. The waveguide structure consists of a shallow 1D grating that has a bell- or trough-shaped amplitude in the confinement direction. Finally, we provide an experimental proof of the concept for this mechanism.

Two-dimensional higher-band vortex lattice solitons.

We study self-localized second-band vortex states in two-dimensional photonic lattices and find stable ring solitons whose phase forms an array of counterrotating vortices. We also identify composite solitons in which a second-band vortex is jointly trapped with a mode arising from the first band and study their stability. When such a composite entity is unstable, it disintegrates while exchanging angular momentum between its constituents, eventually stabilizing into another form of composite soliton.

Observation of elliptic incoherent spatial solitons.

We present the first experimental observation of spatially incoherent elliptic solitons. We use partially spatially incoherent light with anisotropic correlation statistics and observe elliptic solitons supported by the photorefractive screening nonlinearity.

Self-deflection and all-optical beam steering in CdZnTe.

We report on the experimental observation of very large self-deflection of optical beams, along with all-optical steering, and electro-optic beam deflection. We observe as many as 27 resolvable spots of deflection at 1-W/cm2 intensity. These deflections arise from enhanced photorefractive effects in CdZnTe:V, giving rise to optically induced index changes in excess of 0.08, which is to our knowledge the strongest nonlinearity ever reported for any bulk semiconductor.

Two-dimensional optical lattice solitons.

We study various families of two-dimensional discrete or lattice solitons, and show that they are possible only when their power level exceeds a critical threshold. In addition, we show that gap-lattice solitons exist only when the lattice possesses a complete 2D band gap. Our results suggest that these conditions are universally valid, irrespective of the nature of the nonlinearity or the specific structure of the index lattice. The analysis explains fundamental aspects of behavior of two-dimensional discrete solitons that have been very recently observed in photosensitive optical crystals.

Observation of locked optical kink-antikink spatial shock waves.

We report the first experimental observation of optical spatial shock-wave pairs. The shock waves consist of two coupled kink and antikink beams that remain locked to each other throughout propagation in a nonlinear diffusion-driven photorefractive crystal. These coupled shock-wave pairs move undistorted at angles that fall outside their original angular sector of propagation.

Multiband vector lattice solitons.

We predict multiband vector solitons in nonlinear periodic systems, using photonic lattices as a prime example. The solitons consist of two optical fields arising from different bands of the transmission spectrum, which involve both bound state and radiation mode components.

Cavity pattern formation with incoherent light.

We study the propagation dynamics of an incoherent light beam circulating in a passive cavity containing noninstantaneous nonlinear media. It is shown that patterns form in this cavity in spite of spatial incoherence of the light. We show that the pattern formation process is always associated with two consecutive thresholds. The first (instability) threshold is unaffected by the cavity boundary conditions, whereas the second threshold is induced by the feedback through the interplay of nonlinear gain and cavity loss.

White-light solitons.

Optical spatial solitons made from incoherent white light were experimentally observed in 1997 by Mitchell and Segev [Nature (London) 387, 880 (1997)]. We present what is believed to be the first theory describing these solitons and find the characteristic features of their spatiotemporal coherence properties and their temporal power spectrum.

Collisions of two solitons in an arbitrary number of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

We show that pairwise soliton collisions in N>2 intensity-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations can be reduced to pairwise soliton collisions in two coupled equations. The reduction applies to a wide class of systems, including the N-component Manakov system. This greatly simplifies the analysis of such systems and has important implications for the application of soliton collisions to all-optical computing.

Observation of two-dimensional discrete solitons in optically induced nonlinear photonic lattices.

Nonlinear periodic lattices occur in a large variety of systems, such as biological molecules, nonlinear optical waveguides, solid-state systems and Bose-Einstein condensates. The underlying dynamics in these systems is dominated by the interplay between tunnelling between adjacent potential wells and nonlinearity. A balance between these two effects can result in a self-localized state: a lattice or 'discrete' soliton. Direct observation of lattice solitons has so far been limited to one-dimensional systems, namely in arrays of nonlinear optical waveguides. However, many fundamental features are expected to occur in higher dimensions, such as vortex lattice solitons, bright lattice solitons that carry angular momentum, and three-dimensional collisions between lattice solitons. Here, we report the experimental observation of two-dimensional (2D) lattice solitons. We use optical induction, the interference of two or more plane waves in a photosensitive material, to create a 2D photonic lattice in which the solitons form. Our results pave the way for the realization of a variety of nonlinear localization phenomena in photonic lattices and crystals. Finally, our observation directly relates to the proposed lattice solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates, which can be observed in optically induced periodic potentials.

Observation of discrete solitons in optically induced real time waveguide arrays.

We report the first experimental observation of discrete solitons in an array of optically induced waveguides. The waveguide lattice is induced in real time by illuminating a photorefractive crystal with a pair of interfering plane waves. We demonstrate two types of bright discrete solitons: in-phase self-localized states and the staggered (pi out-of-phase) soliton family. This experiment is the first observation of bright staggered solitons in any physical system. Our scheme paves the way for reconfigurable focusing and defocusing photonic lattices where low-power (mW) discrete solitons can be thoroughly investigated.

Discrete solitons in photorefractive optically induced photonic lattices.

We demonstrate that optical discrete solitons are possible in appropriately oriented biased photorefractive crystals. This can be accomplished in optically induced periodic waveguide lattices that are created via plane-wave interference. Our method paves the way towards the observation of entirely new families of discrete solitons. These include, for example, discrete solitons in two-dimensional self-focusing and defocusing lattices of different group symmetries, incoherently coupled vector discrete solitons, discrete soliton states in optical diatomic chains, as well as their associated collision properties and interactions. We also present results concerning transport anomalies of discrete solitons that depend on their initial momentum within the Brillouin zone.

Propagation of incoherent "white" light and modulation instability in noninstantaneous nonlinear media.

We develop a theory describing propagation of spatially and temporally incoherent light in noninstantaneous nonlinear media, and predict the existence of modulation instability of "white" light. We find that the modulation instability of white light is fundamentally a collective effect, where all the temporal frequencies participate in the formation of a pattern, and self-adjust their respective contributions.
