Surface-assisted coordination chemistry and self-assembly.

This article discusses different approaches to build up supramolecular nanoarchitectures on surfaces, which were simultaneously investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on the single-molecule level. Following this general road map, first, the hydrogen-bonding guided self-assembly of two different, structural-equivalent molecular building blocks, azobenzene dicarboxylic acid and stilbene dicarboxylic acid, was studied. Secondly, the coordination chemistry of the same building blocks, now acting as ligands in metal coordination reactions, towards co-sublimed Fe atoms was studied under near surface-conditions. Extended two-dimensional tetragonal network formation with unusual Fe2L(4/2)-dimers at the crossing points was observed on copper surfaces. Complementary to the first two experiments, a two-step approach based on the solution-based self-assembly of square-like tetranuclear complexes of the M4L4-type with subsequent deposition on graphite surfaces was investigated. One- and two-dimensional arrangements as well as single molecules of the M4L4-complexes could be observed. Moreover, the local electronic properties of a single M4L4-complexes could be probed with submolecular resolution by means of scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS).

The [Fe(III)[Fe(III)(L1)2]3] star-type single-molecule magnet.

Star-shaped complex [Fe(III)[Fe(III)(L1)2]3] (3) was synthesized starting from N-methyldiethanolamine H2L1 (1) and ferric chloride in the presence of sodium hydride. For 3, two different high-spin iron(III) ion sites were confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy at 77 K. Single-crystal X-ray structure determination revealed that 3 crystallizes with four molecules of chloroform, but, with only three molecules of dichloromethane. The unit cell of 3.4CHCl3 contains the enantiomers (delta)-[(S,S)(R,R)(R,R)] and (lambda)-[(R,R)(S,S)(S,S)], whereas in case of 3.3CH2Cl2 four independent molecules, forming pairs of the enantiomers [lambda-(R,R)(R,R)(R,R)]-3 and [lambda-(S,S)(S,S)(S,S)]-3, were observed in the unit cell. According to SQUID measurements, the antiferromagnetic intramolecular coupling of the iron(III) ions in 3 results in a S = 10/2 ground state multiplet. The anisotropy is of the easy-axis type. EPR measurements enabled an accurate determination of the ligand-field splitting parameters. The ferric star 3 is a single-molecule magnet (SMM) and shows hysteretic magnetization characteristics below a blocking temperature of about 1.2 K. However, weak intermolecular couplings, mediated in a chainlike fashion via solvent molecules, have a strong influence on the magnetic properties. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) were used to determine the structural and electronic properties of star-type tetranuclear iron(III) complex 3. The molecules were deposited onto highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). Small, regular molecule clusters, two-dimensional monolayers as well as separated single molecules were observed. In our STS measurements we found a rather large contrast at the expected locations of the metal centers of the molecules. This direct addressing of the metal centers was confirmed by DFT calculations.

STM/STS observation of polyoxoanions on HOPG surfaces: the wheel-shaped [Cu20Cl(OH)24(H2O)12(P8W48O184)]25- and the ball-shaped [{Sn(CH3)2(H2O)}24{Sn(CH3)2}12(A-PW9O34)12]36-.

A combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) techniques have been performed on the wheel-shaped [Cu20Cl(OH)24(H2O)12(P8W48O184)]25- and the ball-shaped [{Sn(CH3)2(H2O)}24{Sn(CH3)2}12(A-PW9O34)12]36- deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surfaces. Small, regular molecule clusters, as well as separated single molecules, were observed. The size of the molecules is in agreement with the data determined by X-ray crystallography. In STS measurements, we found a rather large contrast at the expected location of the Cu metal centers in our molecules, i.e., the location of the individual Cu ions in their organic matrix is directly addressable by STS.

Improved fingerprint identification with supervised filtering enhancement.

An important step in the fingerprint identification system is the reliable extraction of distinct features from fingerprint images. Identification performance is directly related to the enhancement of fingerprint images during or after the enrollment phase. Among the various enhancement algorithms, artificial-intelligence-based feature-extraction techniques are attractive owing to their adaptive learning properties. We present a new supervised filtering technique that is based on a dynamic neural-network approach to develop a robust fingerprint enhancement algorithm. For pattern matching, a joint transform correlation (JTC) algorithm has been incorporated that offers high processing speed for real-time applications. Because the fringe-adjusted JTC algorithm has been found to yield a significantly better correlation output compared with alternate JTCs, we used this algorithm for the identification process. Test results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Comparative study of face recognition techniques that use joint transform correlation and principal component analysis.

Face recognition based on principal component analysis (PCA) that uses eigenfaces is popular in face recognition markets. We present a comparison between various optoelectronic face recognition techniques and a PCA-based technique for face recognition. Computer simulations are used to study the effectiveness of the PCA-based technique, especially for facial images with a high level of distortion. Results are then compared with various distortion-invariant optoelectronic face recognition algorithms such as synthetic discriminant functions (SDF), projection-slice SDF, optical-correlator-based neural networks, and pose-estimation-based correlation.

Optical security system for the protection of personal identification information.

A new optical security system for the protection of personal identification information is proposed. First, authentication of the encrypted personal information is carried out by primary recognition of a personal identification number (PIN) with the proposed multiplexed minimum average correlation energy phase-encrypted (MMACE_p) filter. The MMACE_p filter, synthesized with phase-encrypted training images, can increase the discrimination capability and prevent the leak of personal identification information. After the PIN is recognized, speedy authentication of personal information can be achieved through one-to-one optical correlation by means of the optical wavelet filter. The possibility of information counterfeiting can be significantly decreased with the double-identification process. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Dynamic target tracking with fringe-adjusted joint transform correlation and template matching.

Target tracking in forward-looking infrared (FLIR) video sequences is a challenging problem because of various limitations such as low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), image blurring, partial occlusion, and low texture information, which often leads to missing targets or tracking nontarget objects. To alleviate these problems, we developed a novel algorithm that involves local-deviation-based image preprocessing as well as fringe-adjusted joint-transform-correlation--(FJTC) and template-matching--(TM) based target detection and tracking. The local-deviation-based preprocessing technique is used to suppress smooth texture such as background and to enhance target edge information. However, for complex situations such as the target blending with background, partial occlusion of the target, or proximity of the target to other similar nontarget objects, FJTC may produce a false alarm. For such cases, the TM-based detection technique is used to compensate FJTC breaking points by use of cross-correlation coefficients. Finally, a robust tracking algorithm is developed by use of both FJTC and TM techniques, which is called FJTC-TM technique. The performance of the proposed FJTC-TM algorithm is tested with real-life FLIR image sequences.

Three-dimensional fringe-adjusted joint transform correlation.

A three-dimensional (3D) pattern recognition technique using the concept of fringe-adjusted joint-transform correlation is proposed in this paper. The proposed technique yields better correlation discrimination ability compared with alternate 3D classical joint-transform correlation by producing sharper and stronger correlation peak intensity. Simulation results verify the performance of the proposed technique.
