One-electron versus two-electron mechanisms in the oxidative addition reactions of chloroalkanes to amido-bridged rhodium complexes.

The compound syn-[{Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(CNtBu)(2)}(2)] (1) oxidatively adds C--Cl bonds of alkyl chlorides (RCl) and dichloromethane to each metal centre to give the cationic complexes syn-[{Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(eta(1)-R)(CNtBu)(2)}(2)(mu-Cl)]Cl and anti-[{Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})Cl(CNtBu)(2)}(2)(mu-CH(2))]. Reaction of 1 with the chiral alkyl chloride (-)-(S)-ClCH(Me)CO(2)Me (R*Cl) gave [{Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(eta(1)-R*)(CNtBu)(2)}(2)(mu-Cl)]Cl ([3]Cl) as an equimolecular mixture of the meso form (R,S)-[3]Cl-C(s) and one enantiomer of the chiral form [3]Cl-C(2). This reaction, which takes place in two steps, was modeled step-by-step by reacting the mixed-ligand complex syn-[(cod)Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(2)Rh(CNtBu)(2)] (4) with R*Cl, as a replica of the first step, to give [(cod)Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(2)RhCl(eta(1)-R*)(CNtBu)(2)] (5) with racemization of the chiral carbon. Further treatment of 5 with CNtBu to give the intermediate [(CNtBu)(2)Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(2)RhCl(eta(1)-R*)(CNtBu)(2)], followed by reaction with R*Cl reproduced the regioselectivity of the second step to give (R,S)-[3]Cl-C(s) and [3]Cl-C(2) in a 1:1 molar ratio. Support for an S(N)2 type of reaction with inversion of the configuration in the second step was obtained from a similar sequence of reactions of 4 with ClCH(2)CO(2)Me first, then with CNtBu, and finally with R*Cl to give [(CNtBu)(2)(eta(1)-CH(2)R)Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(2)(mu-Cl)Rh(eta(1)-R*)(CNtBu)(2)]Cl (R = CO(2)Me, [7]Cl) as a single enantiomer with the R configuration at the chiral carbon. The reactions of 1 with (+)-(S)-XCH(2)CH(CH(3))CH(2)CH(3) (X = Br, I) gave the related complexes [{Rh(mu-NH{p-tolyl})(eta(1)-CH(2)CH(CH(3))CH(2)CH(3))(CNtBu)(2)}(2)(mu-X)]X, probably by following an S(N)2 profile in both steps.

Tris(pyrazolyl)borate carbosilane dendrimers and metallodendrimers.

A modified tris(pyrazolylborate) ligand has been prepared in two steps. First, reaction of triisopropylborate with allylmagnesium bromide and further treatment with benzoyl chloride gave CH(2) = CHCH(2)B(O(i)Pr), which was then reacted with potassium pyrazolate and pyrazole to give the compound K[CH(2) = CHCH(2)Bpz(3)]. The new allyl-containing scorpionate anion of acts as a bi- or tri-dentate ligand, as shown by the mononuclear complexes [CH(2) = CHCH(2)Bpz(3)M(LL)] (M = Rh, LL = nbd, ; LL = tfb, ; LL = (CO)(PPh(3)), ; M = Ir, LL = cod, ), obtained from reactions of the chlorido-bridged dinuclear complexes [{M(mu-Cl)(LL)}(2)] with 2. Furthermore, the borate represents a key material to achieve the attachment of tris(pyrazolyl)borate groups to the peripheries of carbosilane dendrimers. Thus, the platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions of compound with the dendritic cores Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)H](4) (G(0)-(SiH)(4)), (G(1)-(SiH)(8)), and (G(2)-(SiH)(16)) gave the corresponding borate-containing dendrimers Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)B(O(i)Pr)(2)](4) (G(0)-B(4)), Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe{(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)B(O(i)Pr)(2)}(2)](4) (G(1)-B(8)), and Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe{(CH(2))(3)SiMe[(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)B(O(i)Pr)(2)](2)}(2)](4) (G(2)-B(16)) selectively in the anti-Markovnikov direction. Further reactions of G(0)-B(4), G(1)-B(8) and G(2)-B(16) with potassium pyrazolate and pyrazole rendered the corresponding polyanionic dendrimers K(4)[Si{(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)Bpz(3)}(4)] (G(0)-(Bpz(3))(4)), G(1)-(Bpz(3))(8), and G(2)-(Bpz(3))(16), respectively, which contain 4, 8, and 16 tris(pyrazolyl)borate groups symmetrically located around the dendritic peripheries. These unusual polyanionic dendrimers are excellent scaffolds to support metal centres, as shown by the reactions of G(0)-(Bpz(3))(4), G(1)-(Bpz(3))(8), and G(2)-(Bpz(3))(16) with [{Rh(mu-Cl)(nbd)}(2)] to give the neutral rhodadendrimers [Si{(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)Bpz(3)Rh(nbd)}(4)] G(0)-(Bpz(3)Rh)(4), G(1)-(Bpz(3)Rh)(8) and G(2)-(Bpz(3)Rh)(16) as stable solids in excellent yields. Following this protocol, mixed rhodium/iridium metallodendrimers can be prepared.

Unprecedented hybrid scorpionate/phosphine ligand able to be anchored to carbosilane dendrimers.

The synthesis of a novel hybrid pyrazolate/phosphine anionic ligand [CH2=CHCH2B(CH2PPh2)(pz)2]- is described. Coordination of this ligand to metals in a fac tridentate fashion occurs in the complexes [CH2=CHCH2B(CH2PPh2)(pz)2M(cod)], prepared by reactions of the lithium salt of the ligand with [M(mu-Cl)(cod)]2 (M=Rh, Ir). They are pentacoordinated, with the rhodium complex showing a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal structure in the solid state, as determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Furthermore, the ligand has been linked to the periphery of a carbosilane dendrimer, resulting in the polyanionic dendrimer [Li(TMED)]4[Si{(CH2)3SiMe2(CH2)3B(CH2PPh2)(pz)2}4], which leads further to the corresponding metallodendrimer with four rhodium atoms.

Discrete iridium pyridonate chains with variable metal valence: nature and energetics of the Ir-Ir bonding from DFT calculations.

The structure of the Ir(I) complex [Ir2(mu-OPy)2(CO)4] (Opy = 2-pyridonate) has been fully characterized in its head-to-head (A) configuration as a "dimer of dimers" AA in which two binuclear complexes are connected by means of a weak, but unsupported, iridium-iridium interaction (Ir(2)...Ir(2A) 2.9808(6) A). The head-to-tail isomer, referred to as B, was found in equilibrium with A in solution. It has been shown that this complex can be oxidized by diiodine to give iridium chains with highly selective configurations and general formula I-[Ir2(mu-OPy)2(CO)4]n-I (n = 1-3). The synthesis of IAI (1), of the isomers IAAI (2AA) and IABI (2AB), and of IABAI (3) is reported. DFT calculations have been carried out on A and B and on the known isomers of 1-3, as well as on two isomers of the hypothetic chain of eight Ir(1.25) atoms corresponding to n = 4. The stability of the metal chain is assigned to a 2-electron/2n-center sigma bond delocalized along the metal backbone and supplemented with a weak attractive interaction of the metallophilic type. Calculations confirm that further oxidation of the Ir chains corresponding to n > 1 by iodine, yielding the cleavage of one or two unsupported bond(s), is a highly exothermic process. The formation of the I-[Ir2(mu-OPy)2(CO)4]n-I chains is also computed to be exothermic, either highly for n = 1 or still significantly for n = 2 and 3. At variance with these results, the formation of an octanuclear chain is predicted to be no more than marginally exothermic (DeltaG = 1.7 kcal.mol(-1)), mainly because of interligand strain induced by the steric bulk of the amidate rings.

Peripheral SH-functionalisation of carbosilane dendrimers including the synthesis of the model compound dimethylbis(propanethiol)silane and their interaction with rhodium complexes.

Treatment of the allyl-containing compounds Me2Si(CH2CHCH2)2 and MeSi(CH2CHCH2)3 with thioacetic acid in the presence of AIBN gave Me2Si[(CH2)3SC(O)CH3]2 and MeSi[(CH2)3SC(O)CH3]3, respectively, which were reduced with LiAlH4 to the dithiols Me2Si[(CH2)3SH]2(3) and MeSi[(CH2)3SH]3(4). This protocol was applied to the first and second generations of the doubly and triply-branched carbosilane allyl dendrimers, Si[(CH2)3SiMe(CH2CHCH2)2]4(G(1)allyl-8), Si[(CH2)3SiMe{(CH2)3SiMe(CH2CHCH2)2}2]4(G(2)allyl-16), Si[(CH2)3Si(CH2CHCH2)3]4(G(1)allyl-12), and Si[(CH2)3Si{(CH2)3Si(CH2CHCH2)3}3]4(G(2)allyl-36) to give the corresponding SH functionalised surface dendrimers Si[(CH2)3SiMe(CH2CH2CH2SH)2]4(G(1)SH-8), G(2)SH-16, G(1)SH-12, and G(2)SH-36. Reactions of 3 with [M(acac)(diolefin)](M = Rh, Ir; diolefin = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, 2,5-norbornadiene) gave the compounds of the type [M2(mu-Me2Si[(CH2)3S]2)(diolefin)2]n. These diolefin complexes are octanuclear (n= 4) in solution while the complex [Rh2(mu-Me2Si[(CH2)3S]2)(cod)2]n(5) is tetranuclear in the solid state. The structure of 5, solved by X-ray diffraction methods, consists of a 20-membered metallomacrocycle formed by two dimethylbis(propylthiolate)silane moieties bridging four fragments Rh(cod) in a mu2 fashion through the sulfur atoms. Treatment of [Rh(acac)(CO)2] with 3 gave [Rh2(mu-Me2Si[(CH2)3S]2)(CO)4]n, which is a mixture of tetra (n= 2) and octanuclear (n= 4) complexes in a 2 : 1 ratio in solution, while the related complex [Rh2(mu-Me2Si[(CH2)3S]2)(CO)2(PPh3)2]2 is tetranuclear. Reactions of [Rh(acac)(L-L)](L-L = cod, (CO)2, (CO)(PPh3)) with 4 and the dendrimers G(1)SH-8, G(2)SH-16, and G(1)SH-12, gave microcrystalline solids of formulae [Rh3(MeSi[(CH2)3S]3)(L-L)3]n, [Si[(CH2)3SiMe{(CH2)3SRh(cod)}2]4]n([G(1)Rh(cod)-8]n), [Si[(CH2)3Si{(CH2)3SRh(cod)}3]4]n([G(1)Rh(cod)-12]n), etc., which presumably are tridimensional coordination polymers.

Crescent-shaped rhodium(I) complexes with bis(o-carboxymethylphenyl)triazenide.

Reaction of [[Rh(mu-Cl)(CO)2]2] with the triazene ArNNNHAr (Ar = o-CO2MeC6H4) produced the mononuclear complex [RhCl(ArNNNHAr)(CO)2] (1). Complex 1 reacted with KOH in methanol to give the dinuclear compound [[Rh(mu-ArNNNAr)(CO)2]2] (2), which showed a "mu-(1kappaN1,2kappaN3)-ArNNNAr" coordination mode for both bridging ligands. The dinuclear complex [[Rh(mu-ArNNNAr)(CO)2]2] (2) easily undergoes redistribution reactions in which the eight-membered "Rh2(NNN)2" core is broken. Thus, reaction of 2 with the anionic complex (NHEt3)[RhCl2(CO)2] gave the single-bridged complex (NHEt3)[Rh2(mu-ArNNNAr)Cl2(CO)4] (4), while the trinuclear complexes [Rh3(mu-ArNNNAr)(mu-Cl)(mu-CO)Cl(CO)4] (5) and [Rh3(mu-ArNNNAr)2(mu-Cl)(mu-CO)(CO)3] (6) were isolated by addition of the neutral compound [[Rh(mu-Cl)(CO)2]2] to 2, depending on the molar ratio employed. The formation of 5 and 6 involved the loss of carbonyl groups and the coordination of the oxygen atoms of the CO2Me groups. The structures of 4, 5, and 6 have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods, which show the ability of bis(o-carboxymethylphenyl)triazenide to act as bi-, tri-, and tetra-dentate ligand-spanning dinuclear moieties in trinuclear complexes.

Tetranuclear [Rh4(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)4] complexes as building blocks for new inorganic architectures: synthesis of coordination polymers and heteropolynuclear complexes with electrophilic d8 and d10 metal fragments.

The reaction of [Rh4(mu-PyS2)2(cod)4] (PyS2 = 2,6-pyridinedithiolate, cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) with CF3SO3Me gave the cationic complex [Rh(4)(mu-PyS(2)Me)(2)(cod)4][CF3SO3]2 (1) with two 6-(thiomethyl)pyridine-2-thiolate bridging ligands from the attack of Me+ at the terminal sulfur atoms of the starting material. Under identical conditions [Rh4(mu-PyS2)2(tfbb)4] (tfbb = tetrafluorobenzobarrelene) reacted with CF3SO3Me to give the mixed-ligand complex [Rh(4)(mu-PyS2)(mu-PyS2Me)(tfbb)4][CF3SO3] 2. The nucleophilicity of the bridging ligands in the complexes [Rh4(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)4] was exploited to prepare heteropolynuclear species. Reactions with [Au(PPh3)(Me2CO)][ClO4] gave the hexanuclear complexes [(PPh3)2Au2Rh4(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)4][ClO4]2 (diolefin = cod (3), tfbb (4)). The structure of 4, solved by X-ray diffraction methods, showed the coordination of the [Au(PPh3)]+ fragments to the peripheral sulfur atoms in [Rh4(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)4] along with their interaction with the neighbor rhodium atoms. Neutral coordination polymers of formula [ClMRh4(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)4]n (M = Cu (5, 6), Au (7)) result from the self-assembly of alternating [Rh4(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)4] ([Rh4]) blocks and MCl linkers. The formation of the infinite polymetallic chains was found to be chiroselective for M = Cu; one particular chain contains exclusively homochiral [Rh4] complexes. Cationic heterometallic coordination polymers of formula [MRh4(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)4]n[BF4]n (M = Ag (8, 9), Cu (10, 11)) and [Rh5(mu-PyS2)2(diolefin)5]n[BF4]n (12, 13) result from the reactions of [Rh4] with [Cu(CH2CN)4]BF4, AgBF4, and [Rh(diolefin)(Me2CO)2]BF4, respectively. The heterometallic coordination polymers exhibit a weak electric conductivity in the solid state in the range (1.2-2.8) x 10(-7) S cm(-1).

Heteronuclear rhodium, palladium, platinum, and gold organoimido complexes from dinuclear organoamido rhodium precursors.

Treatment of the organoamido complexes [Rh(2)(mu-4-HNC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(L(2))(2)] (L(2) = 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod), L = CO) with nBuLi gave solutions of the organoimido species [Li(2)Rh(2)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(L(2))(2)]. Further reaction of [Li(2)Rh(2)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(cod)(2)] with [Rh(2)(mu-Cl)(2)(cod)(2)] afforded the neutral tetranuclear complex [Rh(4)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(cod)(4)] (2), which rationalizes the direct syntheses of 2 from [Rh(2)(mu-Cl)(2)(cod)(2)] and Li(2)NC(6)H(4)Me. Reactions of [Li(2)Rh(2)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(CO)(4)] with chloro complexes such as [Rh(2)(mu-Cl)(2)(CO)(4)], [MCl(2)(cod)] (M = Pd, Pt), and [Ru(2)(mu-Cl)(2)Cl(2)(p-cymene)(2)] afforded the homo- and heterotrinuclear complexes PPN[Rh(3)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(CO)(6)] (5; PPN=bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium), [(CO)(4)Rh(2)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)M(cod)] (M = Pd (6), Pt(7)) and [(CO)(4)Rh(2)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)Ru(p-cymene)] (8), while the reaction with [AuCl(PPh(3))] gave the tetranuclear compound [(CO)(4)Rh(2)(mu--4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)[Au(PPh(3))](2)] (9). The structures of complexes 6, 8, and 9 were determined by X-ray diffraction studies. The anion of 5 reacts with [AuCl(PPh(3))] to give the butterfly cluster [[Rh(3)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(CO)(6)]Au(PPh(3))] (10), in which the Au atom is bonded to two rhodium atoms. Reaction of the anion of 5 with [Rh(cod)(NCMe)(2)](BF(4)) gave the tetranuclear complex [Rh(4)(mu-4-NC(6)H(4)Me)(2)(CO)(6)(cod)] (11) in which the Rh(cod) fragment is pi-bonded to one of the arene rings, while the reaction of the anion of 5 with [PdCl(2)(cod)] afforded the heterotrinuclear complex 6 through a metal exchange process.

Protonation reactions of dinuclear pyrazolato iridium(I) complexes.

The complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)] (1) undergoes double protonation reactions with HCl and with HO(2)CCF(3) to give the neutral dihydride complexes [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(X)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)] (X = Cl, eta(1)-O(2)CCF(3)), in which the hydride ligands were located trans to the X groups and in the boat of the complexes, both in the solid state and in solution. The complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(Cl)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)] evolves in solution to the cationic complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)(mu-Cl)]Cl. Removal of the anionic chloride by reaction with methyltriflate allows the isolation of the triflate salt [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)(mu-Cl)]OTf. This complex undergoes a metathesis reaction of hydride by chloride in CDCl(3) under exposure to the direct sunlight to give the complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(Cl)(CNBu(t))(2)](2)(mu-Cl)]OTf. Protonation of both metal centers in [[Ir(mu-Pz)(CO)(2)](2)] with HCl occurs at low temperature, but eventually the mononuclear compound [IrCl(HPz)(CO)(2)] is isolated. The related complex [[Ir(mu-Pz)(CO)(P[OPh](3))](2)] reacts with HCl and with HO(2)CCF(3) to give the neutral Ir(III)/Ir(III) complexes [[Ir(mu-Pz)(H)(X)(CO)(P[OPh](3))](2)], respectively. Both reactions were found to take place stepwise, allowing the isolation of the intermediate monohydrides. They are of different natures, i.e., the metal-metal-bonded Ir(II)/Ir(II) compound [(P[OPh](3))(CO)(Cl)Ir(mu-Pz)(2)Ir(H)(CO)(P[OPh](3))] and the mixed-valence Ir(I)/Ir(III) complex [(P[OPh](3))(CO)Ir(mu-Pz)(2)Ir(H)(eta(1)-O(2)CCF(3))(CO)(P[OPh](3))].

Stereoselective oxidative additions of iodoalkanes and activated alkynes to a sulfido-bridged heterotrinuclear early-late (TiIr2) complex.

The reactions of the early-late trinuclear complex [Cp(acac)Ti(mu(3)-S)(2)Ir(2)(CO)(4)] (1) with electrophiles have been found to occur on the iridium atoms with no other involvement of the early metal than in electronic effects. The reaction with iodine gave two isomers of the diiridium(II) complex [Cp(acac)Ti(mu(3)-S)(2)Ir(2)I(2)(CO)(4)] differentiated by the relative positions of the iodo ligands on the iridium atoms. The reactions with iodoalkanes are highly stereoselective to give one sole isomer of formula [Cp(acac)Ti(mu(3)-S)(2)Ir(2)(R)(I)(CO)(4)] (R = CH(3), CH(2)I, CHI(2)) with a carbonyl and the iodo ligand trans to the metal-metal bond. The structures of the symmetrical isomer with the iodo ligands trans to the metal-metal bond and that of the compound with R = CHI(2) have been solved by X-ray diffraction methods. The stereoselectivity of the oxidative-addition reactions can be rationalized assuming the influence of steric effects of the groups on the titanium center and a radical-like mechanism. Reactions of 1 with the activated acetylenes, dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate and methylacetylenecarboxylate, gave the complexes [Cp(acac)Ti(mu(3)-S)(2)Ir(2)(mu-eta(1)-RC=CCO(2)Me)(CO)(4)] (R = CO(2)Me, H), with the alkyne bridging the two iridium centers as a cis-dimetalated olefin and the C=C bond parallel to the Ir-Ir axis. Two isomers resulting from the disposition of the alkyne along the Ir-Ir vector were observed in solution for the compound with the nonsymmetrical alkyne (R = H), while only one was observed for the compound with R = CO(2)Me. An exchange, fast in the NMR time scale, of the apical with the equatorial carbonyls occured in the complexes [Cp(acac)Ti(mu(3)-S)(2)Ir(2)(mu-eta(1)-RC=CCO(2)Me)(CO)(4)], producing their equivalence in the (13)C((1)H) NMR spectra.

Structural and dynamic studies on amido-bridged rhodium and iridium complexes.

Treatment of [[M(mu-Cl)(diolefin)](2)] with the lithium salts of primary and secondary amines (LiNRR') in diethyl ether affords the complexes [[M(mu-NRR')(diolefin)](2)] (M=Rh, Ir; diolefin=1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod), tetrafluorobenzobarrelene (tfb); R'=H, R=tBu, Ph, 4-MeC(6)H(4); R=R'=Ph, 4-MeC(6)H(4)). Mixed-bridged chloro/amido complexes are intermediates in these syntheses, two of which, [[Rh(cod)](2)(mu-NHR)(mu-Cl)] (R=tBu, 4-MeC(6)H(4)), have been isolated. Replacement of the diolefin ligands by carbon monoxide or tert-butyl isocyanide in selected compounds takes place with retention of the binuclear structure to give the corresponding complexes [[M(mu-4-HNC(6)H(4)Me)(CO)(2)](2)], [[Rh(mu-4-HNC(6)H(4)Me)(CNtBu)(2)](2)] (12), and [[Rh(mu-NPh(2))(CNtBu)(2)](2)] (13). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of the complexes [[Rh(mu-NRR')(cod)](2)] (R'=H, R=4-MeC(6)H(4) (3); R=R'=4-MeC(6)H(4) (5)), 12, and 13 have shown that the conformation of the "RhN(2)Rh" four-membered metallacycle is planar in 5 and folded in 3, 12, and 13. The complexes with primary amides, 3 and 12, were found to exist as the syn, endo stereoisomers. The fluxionality of the complexes with secondary amides is due to rotation of the aromatic substituents about the N-C(ipso) bond and, in the case of 13, to the inversion of the "RhN(2)Rh" metallacycle as well. The complexes [[M(mu-NHR)(cod)](2)] (R=Ph, 4-MeC(6)H(4)) were found to exist as isomeric mixtures in solution, the syn/anti ratio being 2:3 for the rhodium derivatives and 1:1 for their iridium counterparts. Again, the motion detected was due to rotation of the aromatic substituents, and could be frozen only in the case of the syn isomers. The complex [[Rh(mu-NHtBu)(cod)](2)] with aliphatic amido ligands was found to be the anti folded isomer and proved to be nonfluxional. The most common conformation of the "RhN(2)Rh" metallacycle in these compounds is folded, and the preferred configuration varies from syn for the less encumbered compounds to anti on increasing the bulkiness of the bridging and ancillary ligands.

Dinuclear rhodium and iridium complexes with mixed amido/methoxo and amido/hydroxo bridges.

The reactions of [[M(mu-OMe)(cod)](2)] (M = Rh, Ir; cod = 1,5- cyclooctadiene) with p-tolylamine, alpha-naphthylamine, and p-nitroaniline gave complexes with mixed-bridging ligands, [[M(cod)](2)(mu-NHAr)(mu-OMe)]. Similarly, the related complexes [[Rh(cod)](2)(mu-NHAr)(mu-OH)] were prepared from the reactions of [[Rh(mu-OH)(cod)](2)] with p-tolylamine, alpha-naphthylamine, and p-nitroaniline. The reactions of [[Rh(mu-OR)(cod)](2)] (R = H, Me) with o-nitroaniline gave the mononuclear complex [Rh(o-NO(2)C(6)H(4)NH)(cod)]. The syntheses of the amido complexes involve a proton exchange reaction from the amines to the methoxo or hydroxo ligands and the coordination of the amide ligand. These reactions were found to be reversible for the dinuclear complexes. The structure of [[Rh(cod)](2)(mu-NH[p-NO(2)C(6)H(4)])(mu-OMe)] shows two edge-shared square-planar rhodium centers folded at the edge with an anti configuration of the bridging ligands. The complex [[Rh(cod)](2)(mu-NH[alpha-naphthyl])(mu-OH)] cocrystallizes with [[Rh(mu-OH)(cod)](2)] and THF, forming a supramolecular aggregate supported by five hydrogen bridges in the solid state. In the mononuclear [Rh(o-NO(2)C(6)H(4)NH)(cod)] complex the o-nitroamido ligand chelates the rhodium center through the amido nitrogen and an oxygen of the nitro group.
