Synthesis and characterization of zirconogermanates.

Six new zirconogermanates have been prepared under hydrothermal conditions using amines as bases. There are four new structure types (ASU-n) with a common motif of ZrGe(5). ASU-23 is a layered structure: ZrGe(3)O(8)(OH)F.[C(10)H(26)N(4)].H(2)O, space group P2(1)/n, a = 6.7957(8) A, b = 12.700(1) A, c = 24.293(3) A, beta = 97.936(2) degrees, V = 2076.4(4) A(3). ASU-24 is a pillared layered structure: Zr(3)Ge(6)O(18)(OH(2),F)(4)F(2).[C(6)H(18)N(2)].[C(6)H(17)N(2)](2).2H(2)O, space group P2(1)/n, a = 7.4249(3) A, b = 25.198(1) A, c = 11.3483(5) A, beta = 90.995(1) degrees, V = 2122.9(2) A(3). This material has the lowest framework density (FD) of any oxide material that we are aware of (FD = 8.48 metal atoms/nm(3)). Two other materials form three-dimensional open-frameworks, ASU-25: ZrGe(3)O(9).[C(3)H(12)N(2)], space group P112(1)/a, a = 13.1994(4) A, b = 7.6828(2) A, c = 11.2373(3) A, gamma = 91.233(3) degrees, V = 1139.29(5) A(3). The other is ASU-26: ZrGe(3)O(9).[C(2)H(10)N(2)], space group Pn, a = 13.7611(3) A, b = 7.7294(2) A, c = 11.2331(3) A, beta = 104.793(1) degrees, V = 1155.21(4) A(3). ASU-25 is related to the mineral umbite K(2)ZrSi(3)O(9).H(2)O. The germanium equivalent has been prepared through the inorganic route: K(2)ZrGe(3)O(9).H(2)O, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 13.6432(6) A, b = 7.4256(3) A, c = 10.3973(4) A, V = 1053.33(8) A(3). The structural relationships between ASU-25 and its inorganic counterpart are described. The thermal decomposition of the germanium umbite generated the cyclic trigermanate K(2)ZrGe(3)O(9), analogue of the mineral wadeite, crystallizing in the orthorhombic system, a = 7.076 A, b = 12.123 A, c = 10.451 A, V = 904.5 A(3).

Release of protein-bound residues of thiabendazole from liver.

Tissue-bound residues of thiabendazole (TBZ), a veterinary anthelmintic and postharvest fungicide, are formed when this compound is incubated with rabbit hepatocytes or administered to mice or pigs. Several pretreatment steps were investigated for removing free TBZ and metabolites prior to the release of bound residues, and three procedures were evaluated for the release of bound residues from solvent-extracted rabbit hepatocytes: incubation under acidic conditions, enzymatic action using cystathionine beta-lyase, and Raney nickel desulfurization. Immunoaffinity chromatography utilizes monoclonal antibodies capable of binding TBZ or its 5-hydroxy metabolite enabled isolation of crossreactive residue fractions. Residues released from incurred pig liver and isolated by immunoaffinity included TBZ, as determined by HPLC with photodiode array detection. The methodology described should facilitate food safety assessments of TBZ.

Identification of and symmetry computation for crystal nets.

Exact methods are presented to determine whether two periodic nets are combinatorially isomorphic and to compute the full combinatorial symmetry group of a net. It is found that for a large class of nets, which includes all known zeolite nets and most other known crystal nets, this group can be realized as a crystallographic space group.

Reticular synthesis and the design of new materials.

The long-standing challenge of designing and constructing new crystalline solid-state materials from molecular building blocks is just beginning to be addressed with success. A conceptual approach that requires the use of secondary building units to direct the assembly of ordered frameworks epitomizes this process: we call this approach reticular synthesis. This chemistry has yielded materials designed to have predetermined structures, compositions and properties. In particular, highly porous frameworks held together by strong metal-oxygen-carbon bonds and with exceptionally large surface area and capacity for gas storage have been prepared and their pore metrics systematically varied and functionalized.

Hydrogen storage in microporous metal-organic frameworks.

Metal-organic framework-5 (MOF-5) of composition Zn4O(BDC)3 (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) with a cubic three-dimensional extended porous structure adsorbed hydrogen up to 4.5 weight percent (17.2 hydrogen molecules per formula unit) at 78 kelvin and 1.0 weight percent at room temperature and pressure of 20 bar. Inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy of the rotational transitions of the adsorbed hydrogen molecules indicates the presence of two well-defined binding sites (termed I and II), which we associate with hydrogen binding to zinc and the BDC linker, respectively. Preliminary studies on topologically similar isoreticular metal-organic framework-6 and -8 (IRMOF-6 and -8) having cyclobutylbenzene and naphthalene linkers, respectively, gave approximately double and quadruple (2.0 weight percent) the uptake found for MOF-5 at room temperature and 10 bar.

Three-periodic nets and tilings: regular and quasiregular nets.

Regular nets are defined as those with symmetry that requires the coordination figure to be a regular polygon or polyhedron. It is shown that this definition leads to five regular 3-periodic nets. There is also one quasiregular net with a quasiregular coordination figure. The natural tiling of a net and its associated essential rings are also defined, and it is shown that the natural tilings of the regular nets have the property that there is just one kind of vertex, one kind of edge, one kind of ring and one kind of tile, i.e. transitivity 1111. The quasiregular net has two kinds of natural tile and transitivity 1112.

One-step synthesis and structure of an oligo(spiro-orthocarbonate).

The reaction of pentaerythritol and tetraethylorthocarbonate at 260 degrees C for 12 h yields a white crystalline material that was characterized by 13C CPMAS NMR, CHN analysis, FT-IR, electron and X-ray powder diffraction, and Rietveld analysis. The white crystalline material was found to have the formula C6H8O4 and a crystal structure with a monoclinic cell [a = 9.167 A, b = 5.681 A, c = 5.880 A, beta = 90.0 degrees , space group I2] of hexagonally arranged spiro-oligomeric chains.

Cu(2)[o-Br-C(6)H(3)(CO(2))(2)](2)(H(2)O)(2).(DMF)(8)(H(2)O)(2): a framework deliberately designed to have the NbO structure type.

The synthesis of an NbO-type metal-organic framework was achieved by design: o-Br-BDC (BDC = benzenedicarboxylate) was used to direct the formation of Cu2(CO2)4 paddle wheel units at 90 degrees to each other and thus yield the target network. The compound was formulated as Cu2[o-Br-BDC]2(H2O)2.(DMF)8(H2O)2 (MOF-101) and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction [cubic, space group Imm (No. 229) with a = 21.607(3) A, V = 10088(2) A3, Z = 6], which fully confirmed the presence of the expected structure. Despite having very large apertures and voids, MOF-101 has a noninterpenetrated structure, an intriguing observation that is discussed in the context of dual structures.

Systematic design of pore size and functionality in isoreticular MOFs and their application in methane storage.

A strategy based on reticulating metal ions and organic carboxylate links into extended networks has been advanced to a point that allowed the design of porous structures in which pore size and functionality could be varied systematically. Metal-organic framework (MOF-5), a prototype of a new class of porous materials and one that is constructed from octahedral Zn-O-C clusters and benzene links, was used to demonstrate that its three-dimensional porous system can be functionalized with the organic groups -Br, -NH2, -OC3H7, -OC5H11, -C2H4, and -C4H4 and that its pore size can be expanded with the long molecular struts biphenyl, tetrahydropyrene, pyrene, and terphenyl. We synthesized an isoreticular series (one that has the same framework topology) of 16 highly crystalline materials whose open space represented up to 91.1% of the crystal volume, as well as homogeneous periodic pores that can be incrementally varied from 3.8 to 28.8 angstroms. One member of this series exhibited a high capacity for methane storage (240 cubic centimeters at standard temperature and pressure per gram at 36 atmospheres and ambient temperature), and others the lowest densities (0.41 to 0.21 gram per cubic centimeter) for a crystalline material at room temperature.

Screening of clostebol and its metabolites in bovine urine with ELISA and comparison with GC-MS results in an interlaboratory study.

An extraction procedure for clostebol metabolites in urine is developed including enzymatic hydrolysis of conjugated metabolites with Helix pomatia juice (SHP) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) with further cleanup of sample extracts. For the enzymatic deconjugation step, variables such as buffer pH, amount of enzyme, incubation time, and temperature are examined. For the SPE step, different wash solutions and combinations with subsequent liquid-liquid extractions are examined. Incurred bovine urine samples, obtained through oral and intramuscular administration of clostebol acetate to animals, are used to test the performance of the developed method. In addition to the optimization of the sample pretreatment procedure, an interlaboratory study for the analysis of the incurred urine samples with ELISA and GC-MS is performed and good agreements are observed.
