Photocatalytic property and electronic structure of triple-layered perovskite tantalates, MCa2Ta3O10 (M = Cs, Na, H, and C6H13NH3).

The Dion-Jacobson series of triple-layered perovskite tantalates (MCa2Ta3O10, M = Cs, Na, H, and C6H13NH3) were synthesized to evaluate their photocatalytic activity for overall water splitting to evolve H2/O2 under UV irradiation. The photocatalytic activity was susceptible to the hydration of interlayer space. The hydrous Na phase exhibited much higher activity (H2: 308 micromol.h(-1)) compared to the anhydrous Cs phase (24 micromol.h(-1)) and the hydrous H phase (22 micromol.h(-1)) in the presence of 0.5 wt % Ni impregnated. H2O/D2O isotopic experiment suggested that the hydrated interlayer plays as an active site for water splitting, where the high mobility of water molecule in the interlayer should correlate with the total photocatalytic activity. The FLAPW electronic structure calculation demonstrated that the terminating oxygen site, O4, which faces to the interlayer space, contributes largely to the top of the valence band. Judging from comparison with the double-layered tantalates, MLaTa2O7, in our previous study, the contribution of terminating oxygen site to the band structure is supposed to depend on the number of perovskite layers.

A case of cardiac tamponade following esophageal resection.

We report a rare case of cardiac tamponade after esophageal resection for esophageal cancer. A 69-year-old man underwent subtotal esophagectomy and reconstruction of the gastric tube with cervical anastomosis via the poststernal route and three-field lymphadectomy via a median sternotomy. On postoperative day 4, the patient developed dyspnea, chest oppression, and hemodynamic instability due to cardiac tamponade. Emergency percutaneous catheter drainage was performed to manage the cardiac tamponade. Acute pericarditis due to the original surgical procedure was suspected to be the cause of the tamponade. Although rare, cardiac tamponade should be considered as a cause of hemodynamic instability after esophageal resection.

Simple closure of a perforated duodenal diverticulum: "a case report".

Spontaneous perforation of a duodenal diverticulum is a rare but serious complication with significant mortality rates. Just over 100 cases have been reported in the world literature. One case of perforated duodenal diverticulum treated by simple closure is reported. An elderly female was admitted to our hospital with an acute abdomen. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed retroperitoneal air around the duodenum and right kidney. Laparotomy with a Kocher maneuver disclosed a perforated diverticulum in the second portion of the duodenum. Although diverticulectomy is the most common treatment, simple closure of the perforated duodenal diverticulum with drainage was performed to avoid injury to the distal common bile duct and ampulla of Vater, which were close to the diverticulum. The patient has fully recovered and has been asymptomatic with no signs of recurrence for 25 months.
