Spontaneous circulation in ground-state spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.

We report on a study of the spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By solving the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equations for this system, we find three ground-state phases. Moreover, we show that a substantial orbital angular momentum accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking emerges spontaneously in a certain parameter regime. We predict that all these phases can be observed in the spin-1 87Rb condensate by changing the number of atoms or the trap frequency.

Einstein-de Haas effect in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.

The general properties of the order parameter for a dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensate are discussed based on symmetries of interactions. An initially spin-polarized dipolar condensate is shown to dynamically generate a nonsingular vortex via spin-orbit interactions--a phenomenon reminiscent of the Einstein-de Haas effect in ferromagnets.

Symmetry breaking and enhanced condensate fraction in a matter-wave bright soliton.

An exact diagonalization study reveals that a matter-wave bright soliton and the Goldstone mode are simultaneously created in a quasi-one-dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein condensate by superpositions of quasidegenerate low-lying many-body states. Upon formation of the soliton the maximum eigenvalue of the single-particle density matrix increases dramatically, indicating that a fragmented condensate converts into a single condensate as a consequence of the breaking of translation symmetry.

Vortex molecules in coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates.

A vortex molecule is predicted in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates whose internal hyperfine states are coupled coherently by an external field. A vortex in one component and one in the other are connected by a domain wall of the relative phase, constituting a "vortex molecule," which features a nonaxisymmetric (pseudo)spin texture with a pair of merons. The binding mechanism of the vortex molecule is discussed based on a generalized nonlinear sigma model and a variational ansatz. The anisotropy of vortex molecules is caused by the difference in the scattering lengths, yielding a distorted vortex-molecule lattice in fast rotating condensates.

Emergence of BLOCH bands in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate.

A rotating Bose-Einstein condensate is shown to exhibit a Bloch band structure even in the absence of a periodic potential. Vortices enter the condensate via Bragg reflection if the frequency of a rotating drive is adiabatically increased or decreased, or if the interaction is adiabatically changed at a constant rotating drive. A localized state analogous to a gap soliton in a periodic system is predicted to occur near the edge of the Brillouin zone.

Ultrafine Na-4-mica: uptake of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations by ion exchange.

The cation exchange properties of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations at room temperature were investigated on an ultrafine, highly charged Na-4-mica (with the ideal mica composition Na4Mg6Al4Si4O20F4.xH2O). Ultrafine mica crystallites of 200 nm in size led to faster Sr2+ uptake kinetics in comparison to larger mica crystallites. The alkali metal ion (K+, Cs+, and Li+) exchange uptake was rapid, and complete exchange occurred within 30 min. For the alkaline earth metal ions Ba2+, Ca2+, and Mg2+, however, the exchange uptake required lengthy periods from 3 days to 4 weeks to be completed, similar to its Sr uptake, as previously reported. Kinetic models of the modified Freundlich and parabolic diffusion were examined for the experimental data on the Ba2+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ uptakes. The modified Freundlich model described well the Ba2+ ion uptake kinetics as well as that for the Sr2+ ion, while for the Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions the parabolic diffusion model showed better fitting. The alkali and alkaline earth ion exchange isotherms were also determined in comparison to the Sr2+ exchange isotherm. The thermodynamic equilibria for these cations were compared by using Kielland plots evaluated from the isotherms.

Vortex phase diagram in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates.

We investigate the structure of vortex states in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with equal intracomponent but varying intercomponent-coupling constants. A phase diagram in the intercomponent-coupling versus rotation-frequency plane reveals rich equilibrium structures of vortex states. As the ratio of intercomponent to intracomponent couplings increases, the interlocked vortex lattices undergo phase transitions from triangular to square, to double-core lattices, and eventually develop interwoven "serpentine" vortex sheets with each component made up of chains of singly quantized vortices.

Energy gaps and roton structure above the nu=1/2 Laughlin state of a rotating dilute Bose-Einstein condensate.

Exact diagonalization study of a rotating dilute Bose-Einstein condensate reveals that as the first vortex enters the system the degeneracy of the low-energy yrast spectrum is lifted and a large energy gap emerges. As more vortices enter with faster rotation, the energy gap decreases towards zero, but eventually the spectrum exhibits a rotonlike structure above the nu=1/2 Laughlin state without having a phonon branch despite the short-range nature of the interaction.

Split instability of a vortex in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate.

An attractive Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex splits into two pieces via the quadrupole dynamical instability, which arises at a weaker strength of interaction than the monopole and the dipole instabilities. The split pieces subsequently unite to restore the original vortex or collapse.

Divergence-free WKB method.

A new semiclassical approach to the linear and nonlinear one-dimensional Schrödinger equation is presented. For both equations our zeroth-order solutions include nonperturbative quantum corrections to the WKB solution and the Thomas-Fermi solution, thereby allowing us to make uniformly converging perturbative expansions of the wave functions. Our method leads to a new quantization condition that yields exact eigenenergies for the harmonic-oscillator and Morse potentials.
