Ground states and defect energies of the two-dimensional XY spin glass from a quasiexact algorithm.

We employ a novel algorithm using a quasiexact embedded-cluster matching technique as minimization method within a genetic algorithm to reliably obtain numerically exact ground states of the Edwards-Anderson XY spin-glass model with bimodal coupling distribution for square lattices of up to 28 x 28 spins. Contrary to previous conjectures, the ground state of each disorder replica is nondegenerate up to a global O(2) rotation. The scaling of spin and chiral defect energies induced by applying several different sets of boundary conditions exhibits strong crossover effects. This suggests that previous calculations have yielded results far from the asymptotic regime. The novel algorithm and the aspect-ratio scaling technique consistently give theta(s)=-0.308(30) and theta(c)=-0.114(16) for the spin and chiral stiffness exponents, respectively.

Plastocyanin is indispensable for photosynthetic electron flow in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plastocyanin is a soluble copper-containing protein present in the thylakoid lumen, which transfers electrons to photosystem I. In the chloroplast of the flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana, a cytochrome c6-like protein is present, which was recently suggested to function as an alternative electron carrier to plastocyanin. We show that Arabidopsis plants mutated in both of the two plastocyanin-coding genes and with a functional cytochrome c6 cannot grow photoautotrophically because of a complete block in light-driven electron transport. Even increased dosage of the gene encoding the cytochrome c6-like protein cannot complement the double mutant phenotype. This demonstrates that in Arabidopsis only plastocyanin can donate electrons to photosystem I in vivo.

Tracking the function of the cytochrome c6-like protein in higher plants.

The contention that plastocyanin is the only mobile electron donor to photosystem I in higher plants was recently shaken by the discovery of a cytochrome c(6)-like protein in Arabidopsis and other flowering plants. However, the genetic and biochemical data presented in support of the idea that the cytochrome c(6) homologue can replace plastocyanin have now been challenged by two complementary studies. This re-opens the debate on the real function(s) of cytochrome c in the chloroplasts of higher plants.

Random-cluster multihistogram sampling for the q-state Potts model.

Using the random-cluster representation of the q-state Potts models we consider the pooling of data from cluster-update Monte Carlo simulations for different thermal couplings K and number of states per spin q. Proper combination of histograms allows for the evaluation of thermal averages in a broad range of K and q values, including noninteger values of q. Due to restrictions in the sampling process correct normalization of the combined histogram data is nontrivial. We discuss the different possibilities and analyze their respective ranges of applicability.
