Oxo- and imidovanadium complexes incorporating methylene- and dimethyleneoxa-bridged calix[3]- and -[4]arenes: synthesis, structures and ethylene polymerisation catalysis.

Reaction of [V(X)(OR)3] (X=O, Np-tolyl; R=Et, nPr or tBu) with p-tert-butylhexahomotrioxacalix[3]areneH3, LH3, affords the air-stable complexes [{V(X)L}n] (X=O, n=1 (1); X=Np-tolyl, n=2 (2)). Alternatively, 1 is readily available either from interaction of [V(mes)3THF] with LH3, and subsequent oxidation with O2 or upon reaction of LLi3 with [VOCl3]. Reaction of [V(Np-tolyl)(OtBu)3] with 1,3-dimethylether-p-tert-butylcalix[4]areneH2, Cax(OMe)2(OH)2, afforded [{VO(OtBu)}2(mu-O)Cax(OMe)2(O)2].2 MeCN (42 MeCN), in which two vanadium atoms are bound to just one calix[4]arene ligand; the n-propoxide analogue of 4, namely [{VO(OnPr)}2(mu-O)Cax(OMe)2(O)2].1.5 MeCN (51.5 MeCN), has also been isolated from a similar reaction using [V(O)(OnPr)3]. Reaction of [VOCl3], LiOtBu, (Me3Si)2O and Cax(OMe)2(OH)2 gave [{VO(OtBu)Cax(OMe)2(O)2}2Li4O2].8 MeCN (68 MeCN), in which an Li4O4 cube (two of the oxygen atoms are derived from the calixarene ligands) is sandwiched between two Cax(OMe)2(O)2. The reaction between [V(Np-tolyl)(OtBu)3] and Cax(OMe)2(OH)2, afforded [V(Np-tolyl)(OtBu)2Cax(OMe)2(O)(OH)]5 MeCN (75 MeCN), in which two tert-butoxide groups remain bound to the tetrahedral vanadium atom, which itself is bound to the calix[4]arene through only one phenolic oxygen atom. Reaction of p-tert-butylcalix[4]areneH4, Cax(OH)4 and [V(Np-tolyl)(OnPr)3] led to loss of the imido group and formation of the dimeric complex [{VCax(O)4(NCMe)}2].6 MeCN (86 MeCN). Monomeric vanadyl oxo- and imidocalix[4]arene complexes [V(X)Cax(O)3(OMe)(NCMe)] (X=O (11), Np-tolyl (12)) were obtained by the reaction of the methylether-p-tert-butylcalix[4]areneH3, Cax(OMe)(OH)3, and [V(X)(OR)3] (R=Et or nPr). Vanadyl calix[4]arene fragments can be linked by the reaction of 2,6-bis(bromomethyl)pyridine with Cax(OH)4 and subsequent treatment with [VOCl3] to afford the complex [{VOCax(O)4}2(mu-2,6-(CH2)2C5H3N)].4 MeCN (134 MeCN). The compounds 1-13 have been structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane, these complexes displayed poor activities, however, the use of dimethylaluminium chloride and the reactivator ethyltrichloroacetate generates highly active, thermally stable catalysts for the conversion of ethylene to, at 25 degrees C, ultra-high-molecular-weight (>5, 500,000), linear polyethylene, whilst at higher temperature (80 degrees C), the molecular weight of the polyethylene drops to about 450,000. Using 1 and 2 at 25 degrees C for ethylene/propylene co-polymerisation (50:50 feed) leads to ultra-high-molecular-weight (>2,900,000) polymer with about 14.5 mol% propylene incorporation. The catalytic systems employing the methyleneoxa-bridged complexes 1 and 2 are an order of magnitude more active than the bimetallic complexes 5 and 13, which, in turn, are an order of magnitude more active than pro-catalysts 8, 11 and 12. These differences in activity are discussed in terms of the structures of each class of complex.

Two square-planar palladium(II) complexes with P,O-bidentate hybrid ligands.

In the two square-planar palladium(II) complexes chloro[(diphenylphosphinoamino)diphenylphosphine oxide]methylpalladium(II) dimethyl sulfoxide solvate, [Pd(CH3)Cl(C24H21NOP2)].C2H6OS, (I), and chloro{[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]diethoxymethane}methylpalladium(II), [Pd(CH3)Cl(C23H25O2P)], (II), a trans disposition of the diphenylphosphino and chloro groups is observed. The Pd atom in both complexes displays a distorted square-planar configuration formed by the four unique donor atoms (P, Cl, C and O). In compound (I), the five-membered Pd-P-N-P-O metallacycle is best described as having an envelope conformation, whereas in (II) the six-membered Pd-P-C-C-C-O metallacycle adopts a skewed boat conformation. Furthermore, within the P-N-P-O backbone in (I), the P-N distances are consistent with single-bond character [1.659 (3) and 1.692 (3) A], whilst the P=O bond shows appreciable double-bond character [1.509 (2) A].

Radical reactions with 3H-quinazolin-4-ones: synthesis of deoxyvasicinone, mackinazolinone, luotonin A, rutaecarpine and tryptanthrin.

Alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl and acyl radicals have been cyclised onto the 2-position of 3H-quinazolin-4-one. The side chains containing the radical precursors were attached to the nitrogen atom in the 3-position. The cyclisations take place by aromatic homolytic substitution hence retain the aromaticity of the 3H-quinazolin-4-one ring. The highest yields were obtained using hexamethylditin to facilitate cyclisation rather than reduction without cyclisation. The alkaloids deoxyvasicinone , mackinazolinone , tryptanthrin , luotonin A and rutaecarpine were synthesised by radical cyclisation onto 3H-quinazolin-4-one.

Chromogenic indicator for anion reporting based on an N-substituted oxoporphyrinogen.

5,10,15,20-Tetrakis-3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-oxocyclohexadienylidene porphyrinogen and its di-N-benzylated derivative are solvatochromic dyes capable of binding anionic species. The influence of solvent polarity and hydrogen bonding on their electronic absorption spectra was observed. Hydrogen bonding by the porphyrinogen amine protons of acetone solvent molecules could be observed in the solid state. The acetone solvate of N21N23-dibenzyl-5,10,15,20-tetrakis-3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-oxocyclohexadienylidene porphyrinogen crystallized under anhydrous conditions in the space group P with cell dimensions a = 12.1693(11) A, b = 17.5849(13) A, c = 21.0965(17) A, alpha = 69.870(4) degrees , beta = 78.140(4) degrees , gamma = 82.865(5) degrees . These porphyrinogens are capable of binding a variety of anions and can be used to distinguish fluoride chromogenically from the other halide anions. Solvatochromism was combined with anion binding in an attempt to provide more selective tests for anions. The anion binding properties were investigated using UV/vis spectrophotometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Neutral molecular Pd6 hexagons using kappa3-P2O-terdentate ligands.

The one-step synthesis of three new P2O-terdentate carboxylic acid ditertiary phosphines 2-{(Ph2PCH2)2N}-3-(X)C6H3CO2H (X = OCH3, L1; X = OH, L2) and 2-{(Ph2PCH2)2N}-5-(OH)C6H3CO2H (L3) by a phosphorus-based Mannich condensation reaction using Ph2PCH2OH and the appropriate amine in CH3OH is reported. Compounds L1-L3 function as typical kappa2-P2-didentate ligands upon complexation to Pd(CH3)Cl(cod) (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene), affording the neutral, mononuclear complexes Pd(CH3)Cl(L1-L3) (1-3). Metathesis of 1 with NaX (X = Br, I) gave the corresponding (methyl)bromopalladium(II) (4) and (methyl)iodopalladium(II) (5) complexes, respectively. When chloroform or chloroform/methanol solutions of 1-3 (or 5) were allowed to stand, at ambient temperatures, yellow crystalline solids were isolated in very high yields (71-88%) and were analyzed for the novel hexameric palladium(II) compounds 6-9. All new compounds reported have been fully characterized by a combination of spectroscopic (multinuclear NMR, Fourier transform IR, electrospray mass spectrometry, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry) and analytical methods. The self-assembly reactions are remarkably clean as monitored by 31P{1H} and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray structures have been determined for L1, 4, 7.17CDCl3.2Et2O, 8.6CHCl3.8CH3OH, and 9.17CDCl3. In hexamers 7-9, all six square-planar palladium(II) metal centers comprise a kappa2-P2-chelating diphosphine, a kappa1-O-monodentate carboxylate, and either a chloride or iodide ligand, leading to 48-membered metallomacrocycles (with outside diameters of ca. 2.5 nm). Whereas only intramolecular O-H...N hydrogen bonding between the hydroxy group and tertiary amine has been observed in 7, strong intermolecular O-H...O hydrogen bonding of the type CO...HO(CH3)...HO, involving a methanol solvate, has been found in 8, leading to an unprecedented three-dimensional network motif.

Unexpected ring expansion of an enantiopure imidazoline carbene ligand.

[reaction: see text] We report an unexpected ring expansion reaction of an enantiopure fenchone-derived imidazolinium salt during attempts to form copper complexes of the corresponding imidazoline carbene ligand. A N,N'-difenchyl piperazinone was formed in low yield together with the difenchyl-substituted five-membered urea.

An unprecedented alpha-olefin distribution arising from a homogeneous ethylene oligomerization catalyst.

Treatment of the bis(benzimidazolyl)amine chromium complex 2 with ethylene in the presence of MAO affords an exceptionally active oligomerization catalyst and an unprecedented distribution of 1-olefin products in which the C4n series is much more abundant than the C4n+2 series. Deuterium labeling studies are consistent with a metallacyclic chain growth mechanism in which the unusual product distribution arises from the interplay of two sites.

Solution, solid phase and computational structures of apicidin and its backbone-reduced analogs.

The recently isolated broad-spectrum antiparasitic apicidin (1) is one of the few naturally occurring cyclic tetrapeptides (CTP). Depending on the solvent, the backbone of 1 exhibits two gamma-turns (in CH(2)Cl(2)) or a beta-turn (in DMSO), differing solely in the rotation of the plane of one of the amide bonds. In the X-ray crystal structure, the peptidic C==Os and NHs are on opposite sides of the backbone plane, giving rise to infinite stacks of cyclotetrapeptides connected by three intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the backbones. Conformational searches (Amber force field) on a truncated model system of 1 confirm all three backbone conformations to be low-energy states. The previously synthesized analogs of 1 containing a reduced amide bond exhibit the same backbone conformation as 1 in DMSO, which is confirmed further by the X-ray crystal structure of a model system of the desoxy analogs of 1. This similarity helps in explaining why the desoxy analogs retain some of the antiprotozoal activities of apicidin. The backbone-reduction approach designed to facilitate the cyclization step of the acyclic precursors of the CTPs seems to retain the conformational preferences of the parent peptide backbone.

Synthesis of ellipticine: a radical cascade protocol to aryl- and heteroaryl-annulated[b]carbazoles.

[reaction: see text] Imidoyl selanides, synthesized from amides, have been used as radical precursors of imidoyl radicals in cascade reactions. The novel radical cascade has been developed for the simple synthesis of the medicinally important aryl-annulated[b]carbazoles. The protocol has been exemplified with the high-yielding total synthesis of the anticancer alkaloid ellipticine.

Synthetic applications of (Me3SiNSN)2E (E = S, Se) in chalcogen-nitrogen chemistry: formation and structural characterization of Cl2TeESN2 (E = S, Se) and [PPh4]2[Pd2(mu-Se2N2S)X4] (X = Cl, Br).

The reaction of (Me3SiNSN)2S with TeCl4 in CH2Cl2 affords Cl2TeS2N2 (1) and that of (Me3SiNSN)2Se with TeCl4 produces Cl2TeSeSN2 (2) in good yields. The products were characterized by X-ray crystallography, as well as by NMR and vibrational spectroscopy and EI mass spectrometry. The Raman spectra were assigned by utilizing DFT molecular orbital calculations. The pathway of the formation of five-membered Cl2TeESN2 rings by the reactions of (Me3SiNSN)2E with TeCl4 (E = S, Se) is discussed. The reaction of (Me3SiNSN)2Se with [PPh4]2[Pd2X6] yields [PPh4]2[Pd2(mu-Se2N2S)X4] (X = Cl, 4a; Br, 4b), the first examples of complexes of the (Se2N2S)2- ligand. In both cases, this ligand bridges the two palladium centers through the selenium atoms.

1lambda(4),4lambda(4),8lambda(4),11lambda(4)-Tetrathiacyclotetradecane-1,4,7,10-tetraylidenetetraaminium tetrakis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate).

Investigations of the reactivity of the thio-crown [14]aneS(4) (1,4,8,11-tetrathiacyclotetradecane) towards the aminating agent o-mesitylsulfonylhydroxylamine have lead to the crystallization of 1lambda(4),4lambda(4),8lambda(4),11lambda(4)-tetrathiacyclotetradecane-1,4,7,10-tetraylidenetetraaminium tetrakis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate), C10H28N4S(4)4+.4C9H11O3S-. The compound crystallizes in a centrosymmetric space group, with half a formula unit in the asymmetric unit. All S atoms within the cationic component are aminated, with the four NH(2) substituents arranged in pairs on neighbouring S atoms on opposite faces of the crown. The macrocyclic cation in the compound forms hydrogen bonds with the 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate anions to create chains, which are further linked into thick two-dimensional sheets.

Polymorphism in ammonium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate.

During investigations into sulfide- and selenide-amination reactions using the aminating agent o-mesitylsulfonylhydroxylamine, the monoclinic, (I), and orthorhombic, (II), polymorphs of ammonium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate, NH4+.C9H11O3S-, have been crystallized. Investigation of the hydrogen-bonding motifs within the two polymorphs shows that both contain N+-H...O- hydrogen bonds between the ammonium cations and the 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate anions. Polymorph (I) contains R(4)(4)(12) and R(4)(2)(8) graph-set ring motifs, while polymorph (II) contains the same R(4)(4)(12) ring motif in combination with an R(4)(3)(10) motif. The two hydrogen-bonding patterns result in slightly different packing structures for the two polymorphs, but both are based on a thick-sheet arrangement, in which the NH4+ cations are enveloped between two layers of 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate anions. In (I), the aromatic rings of the anions are approximately coplanar, giving parallel sheets, whereas in (II) the sheets are antiparallel and the anions pack in a herring-bone manner within the sheets, with angles of 78.76 (8) degrees between the planes of the aromatic rings.

N-(Diphenylselenio)diphenylsulfimidium tetraphenylborate.

The title compound, C24H20NSSe+.C24H20B-, exhibits disorder (S/Se scrambling) of the chalcogen sites within the S-N-Se triad. Similar disorder was observed in the bromide salt [Aucott, Bailey, Elsegood, Gilby, Holmes, Kelly, Papageorgiou & Pedron-Haba (2004). New J. Chem. pp. 959-966]. The S-N and Se-N bond lengths are 1.6735 (15) and 1.8045 (14) A, respectively. Whereas the chalcogens in the bromide salt are involved in S...Br and Se...Br interactions of very similar distances, the scrambled S and Se sites in the title compound are involved in distinct non-bonded interactions. The site predominantly occupied by sulfur is involved in C-H...S/Se interactions, while the site predominantly occupied by selenium is involved in Se/S...pi interactions.
