Giant optical activity in quasi-two-dimensional planar nanostructures.

We examine the spectral dependence in the visible frequency range of the polarization rotation of two-dimensional gratings consisting of chiral gold nanostructures with subwavelength features. The gratings, which do not diffract, are shown to exhibit giant specific rotation (approximately 10(4) degrees/mm) of polarization in direct transmission at normal incidence. The rotation is the same for light incident on the front and back sides of the sample. Such reciprocity indicates three dimensionality of the structure arising from the asymmetry of light-plasmon coupling at the air-metal and substrate-metal interfaces. The structures thus enable polarization control with quasi-two-dimensional planar objects. However, in contradiction with recently suggested interpretation of experiments on larger scale but otherwise similar structures, the observed polarization phenomena violate neither reciprocity nor time-reversal symmetry.

Heavy photon states in photonic chains of resonantly coupled cavities with supermonodispersive microspheres.

We propose and demonstrate a "bottom-up" approach to constructing photonic structures for photon manipulation. Supermonodispersive polymer microspheres are used as building blocks and a size uniformity better than 0.05% could be obtained by sorting the spheres using spectroscopic methods. The spheres are positioned in a V groove on a silicon substrate and form a photonic chain with resonant coupling of the optical whispering-gallery modes. Photonic band modes are clearly observed in fluorescence and resonant scattering spectra, and an excellent agreement with a tight-binding model calculation is found. Heavy photon states and a group index as high as 40 are obtained.

Photonic molecule lasing.

Lasing at resonantly coupled whispering-gallery mode frequencies is observed in photonic molecules consisting of bispheres of 4.2 and 5.1 microm in diameter placed in a silicon V-groove. We examine spatial profiles of photonic molecule modes by use of frequency-resolved imaging and reveal bonding and antibonding mode features. From the lasing threshold characteristics, we quantitatively measure the quality factor and the spontaneous-emission coupling ratio of the photonic molecule modes and confirm that strong coherent coupling leads to photonic molecule modes.

Recoil-limited laser cooling of 87Sr atoms near the Fermi temperature.

A dynamic magneto-optical trap, which relies on the rapid randomization of population in Zeeman substates, has been demonstrated for fermionic strontium atoms on the 1S0-3P1 intercombination transition. The obtained sample, 1x10(6) atoms at a temperature of 2 microK in the trap, was further Doppler cooled and polarized in a far-off resonant optical lattice to achieve 2 times the Fermi temperature.

Formation of a high T(c) electron-hole liquid in diamond.

We report on the observation of electron-hole ( e-h) liquid (EHL) in diamond by time-resolved luminescence measurements under an intense femtosecond photoexcitation above the band gap. The EHL luminescence band is observed below the e-h plasma band, showing a finite rise time of several tens of picoseconds. The rise time, which corresponds to the nucleation and the growth of the e-h droplets, plummets on approaching the EHL critical temperature. Time-resolved spectral shape analysis reveals a very high carrier density of 1x10(20) cm(-3) and very high critical temperature of T(c) = 165 K of EHL.
