Acid-promoted rearrangement of carbonate functionality anchored to the lower rim of a Calix

A unique calix[4]arene lower-rim intramolecular rearrangement, resulting in molecular asymmetry arising from the upper- and lower-rim substitution pattern, produces a new class of inherently chiral calix[4]arenes in a partial cone conformation. This was aided by molecular rigidification arising from pi-pi and C-H.pi interactions between bulky lower-rim substituents, with the corresponding circular dichroism spectra exhibiting the most intense bisignate Cotton effects yet observed for calix[4]arenes not bearing a chiral center.

Resorcarene-Based Nanoarchitectures: Metal-Directed Assembly of a Molecular Loop and Tetrahedron.

Large cavities and portals are present in the nanoscale molecular architectures formed from dithiocarbamate-functionalized resorcarene ligands and zinc(II) or copper(III) ions. With Zn(II) a molecular loop based on a triangle of resorcarene cups is prepared-the cavity is circular (shown on the left). A molecular cage based on a distorted tetrahedron of four resorcarene ligands assembled by eight Cu(III) ions contains triangular-shaped portals suitable for guest passage (shown on the right).

A Small-Molecule Guanidinium Receptor: The Arginine Cork.

A highly preorganized, artificial receptor for guanidinium cations binds arginine with high affinity in polar solvents, even in water! The X-ray crystal structure of its bis(N-ethylguanidinium) complex shows the formation of hydrogen bonds between the receptor and the guest (see picture). This observation explains the strength of the complex formed with the dipeptide diarginine (K(d)=50 µM in H(2)O).
