Steroids.

Anabolic steroids have been used by athletes for more than three decades in an attempt to improve athletic performance in sports requiring great strength and size. Within the last decade, use of these drugs has spread, involving not only elite athletes, but recreational athletes as well. In the last several years it has become apparent that adolescents are using anabolic steroids. The author describes the physiological effects and side effects of steroids, and reasons for their use by adolescents. The role of the physician in screening for and preventing steroid use is also addressed.
