[Xeroradiography. Technic, methodology, and image characteristics].

Xeroradiography is a new technique employing the photoconductive property of an amorphous metalloid: selenium. The conventional radiographic film is replaced by a selenium plate which, during exposure to x-rays, loses its electrostatic charge in a manner directly proportional to the density of the body structure examined. The latent electrostatic image can then be transferred and fixed on a sheet of plastified paper. The technique presents incontestable advantages, particularly in respect of the richness of detail obtained, and the possibility of demonstrating structures with very different densities in the same image. Currently, however, certain technical limitations, such as the low density of the selenium plate which requires increased doses of the rays administered, prevents xeroradiography from being considered as a total substitute for conventional radiography.

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis. A case report with a discussion of differential diagnosis.

The rare disease of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is characterized by innumerable microscopic stones, mainly of tribasic calcium phosphate, within the pulmonary alveoli. In a 13-year-old boy an earlier radiological examination showed diffuse lung opacity. The main differential diagnoses taken into consideration were sarcoidosis, idiopathic hemosiderosis, diffuse interstitial fibrosis and alveolar proteinosis. The correct diagnosis was made after a lung biopsy which showed intra-alveolar microliths. The radiological findings are in agreement with the reports in the literature. The specific X-ray features of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis are calcified opacities, nodules, hilifugal trabeculations and pleural striae. These radiological signs are sufficiently diagnostic to restrict lung biopsy to particularly difficult cases. The disease is resistant to all therapeutic measures.

Adolescent↗

[Aortic subvalvular stenosis].

Six cases of supravalvular aortic stenosis with other abnormalities are presented. Their causes, anatomical, pathological, and clinical aspects are discussed and reference is made to the excellent results of treatment.

[Acute hemolytic anemia due to autoantibodies with cholelithic complication. Echotomographic diagnostic importance in a case report].

While the cholelithiasis is very common among chronic hemolytic anemia, it is not in acute. A case of cholelithiasis as a complication of autoimmune acute hemolytic anemia in a 5 years old child is reported. A specific and accurate diagnosis was readily made with grey-scale ultrasound. Serial sonograms were obtained to follow the resolution of this case.

Acute Disease↗

[Diagnostic and prognostic value of the echo-Doppler and transcranial Doppler methods in the acute phase of ischemic ictus].

The ischaemic ictuses are a frequent pathology. For their annulling potentiality a quick etiopathogenetic diagnosis is necessary to institute a suitable therapy that limiting the extension of the cerebral damage. In this respect, it is fundamental the use of the duplex methods in real time together with doppler valuation of the neck vessels (carotid and vertebral) and of the intracranial big arteries. The direct observation of the endoluminal surface in the extracranial vessels and the valuation of the circulatory condition in the individual arterial districts explored give as important of haemodynamic information which, added to that obtained through a computerized axial tomography and the clinic, allows a correct diagnostic valuation with important effects on the therapy as well as a reliable prognostic formulation. Description of two clinical cases.

Acute Disease↗

[A case of thrombosis of the superior longitudinal sinus].

A case of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is described in a forty-two years old patient. The literature is reviewed about clinical presentation and neuroradiological findings. We consider the use of NMR in diagnosis.

Adult↗

[Ureteral duplication and anomalous symptomatology. Presentation of a case].

The authors report a case of unilateral ureteral duplication with extravesical ureteral orifice evaluated with sonography and confirmed by surgery. The peculiarity of the case is founded on the anomalous clinical findings with poorly significant uroculture and the apparent discrepancy between sonographic and urographic finding. The important rule of sonographic evaluation in early diagnosis of kidney malformations is confirmed.

Child↗

[Polymorphism of the cleidocranial dysplasia syndrome. Presentation of 2 cases].

Following a brief description of the clinical and radiological features of cleidocranial dysplasia (see Table), two patients are presented who respectively exemplify the classic and the incomplete form of this syndrome. The morphologic appearance of the bone segments involved may suggest a diagnosis of cleidocranial dysplasia even through occasional radiologic examinations, specially in the pediatric age. The patients suffering from this condition, which in itself is not incapacitating, should be serially observed so that appropriate therapeutic measures can be adopted, mainly in the presence of hip dysplasia or when the thoracic cage or the spine are severely involved.
