1. The renin-like substance isolated from the placenta of the rabbit produces a prolonged increase of blood pressure in the nephrectomized rat. If incubated with renin substrate from ox serum, it forms a pressor substance that elevates blood pressure in exactly the same way as does angiotensin. 2. This angiotensin-like principle was concentrated by means of ion-exchange chromatography and compared with Val-5-angiotensins I and II in two paper-chromatography systems and in paper electrophoresis. 3. In all the three methods the unknown principle behaved like a mixture of the two reference compounds. 4. It is concluded that incubation of the renin-like substance of placental origin with substrate from ox serum gave a mixture of Val-5-angiotensins I and II. This is evidence that the enzyme isolated from the placenta is either closely related to, or identical with, renin.

Isologous isolated islets of Langerhans were transplanted into the peritoneum and, via the portal vein, into the liver of diabetic rats. In both groups almost normal blood glucose and serum insulin levels were achieved for a period of three months. Glucose tolerance tests were markedly improved. Morphological examination of the transplanted islets and immunohistochemical tests for insulin and glucagon showed the liver to be a more suitable site for islet grafting than the peritoneum.
Plasma noradrenaline (NA) concentrations and the activity of its synthetic enzyme, dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH), were determined during sexual activity in one male subject on three occasions. Blood was obtained through an intravenous catheter by means of a peristaltic pump and an automatic fraction collector. NA was significantly (P less than 0.001) related to stages of sexual arousal and erection quality. Maximal arousal and erection was accompanied by plasma NA concentration 100% to 1200% higher than basal levels. NA levels also increased significantly with upright posture and with emotional stress. DBH activity did not correlate closely with sexual arousal and erection.
This study examined the role of chronic life stress (homelessness), coping style, and hypertension on beta-adrenergic receptors in a sample of homeless men. Sixteen healthy normotensive subjects and nine untreated hypertensive subjects were studied. Life stress was measured with the Brown and Harris categorization; coping style was measured with the Ways of Coping Scale. Lymphocyte beta-adrenergic receptors were characterized in terms of receptor density (Bmax). Individuals with high life stress had lower Bmax (p < .005). In multiple regression analyses, 50% of the variance in Bmax was accounted for by life stress and coping style (p = .01). Receptor measures may be useful for characterizing the physiological response to continuing life adversity.
Due to medical complications related to stiffness developed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) feeding tubes presently manufactured with di-octylphthalate (DOP), we have assessed the flexibility of PVC tubes manufactured with a nonmigrating plasticizer, ti-octyltrimellitate (TOTM) (National Catheter Co., Argyle, NY). Two sizes of DOP and TOTM PVC feedings tubes were evaluated, #5 French and #8 French. Number 5 French DOP tubes became significantly stiffer as early as 1 to 2 days after intubation and continued to stiffen up to 8 days of use. Among the #5 French DOP tubes, those placed in the jejunum were found to become significantly stiffer than those placed in the stomach. No correlations were found between the development of stiffness and gestational age, postnatal age, sex, birthweight, or kinds of feedings. In contrast, #5 French TOTM and #8 French tubes (DOP and TOTM) did not develop any significant stiffness up to 5 to 8 days of use. This study demonstrates the sustained flexibility of TOTM tubes, and important factor to increase the safety of enteral feedings in newborn infants.
50 Patients weighing between 45 and 114 kg underwent standardized computed tomography of the pelvis. Fat compartments from inside and outside of the small pelvis were assessed quantitatively by means of tracing the fat tissue borders and planimetry. Fat compartments within the small pelvis showed a rather weak correlation with body weight and the so called Rohrer-Index as a weight/height-Index, correlations with the latter being slightly better. From the fat compartments within the single levels the functional reduction of birth channel diameters caused by fat tissue was calculated for. The weight/height-index dependent increase of space demand within the birth channel was rather pronounced at the pelvic brim becoming slighter when reaching mid-pelvis or even pelvic outlet. Hence, the common assumption can no longer be maintained, that adiposity necessarily causes soft tissue dystokia due to larger fat compartments within the small pelvis.

The authors describe characteristics and clinical application of the "ROTOP-insulin-test'' set. Radioimmunological insulin determination is carried out by the principle of reverse titration: 50 ml of plasma is incubated for 18 hours with antiserum. The remaining free valencies of insulin antibodies are bound with the excess of 125I-insulin. Bound 125I-insulin is precipitated after the addition of alcohol. The variation coefficient is 7.4% in one batch and 9.1% in analysis in 48 hours (insulin concentration = 2.08 ng/ml = 49 mcU/ml). The precision index of the standard curve was 0.022. Insulin secretion was analyzed in 107 healthy persons with a normal body weight under conditions of prolonged glucose infusion. Two phases of insulin secretion were shown.
