Correlations between cerebral grey matter flow and hepatic histology in alcoholism.

Thirty alcoholic with a mean age of 44.8 years were examined with the intravenous 133-Xenon method for measurements of regional cerebral flow (rCBF). The results were related to liver histology and hepatic function tests. While there exists no correlation between the rCBF values and hepatic function tests, an important connection between rCBF decrease and the severity of the histological liver analysis is shown. It is suggested that the hepatic biopsy is a good criterion for the long-term evaluation of alcohol impact upon the brain of a given individual and some physiopathological mechanism are discussed.

Breast pathology in MRI. First results.

The authors present the first results of the assessment of MRI (0.35 T) with adapted surface reel in the exploration of mammary pathology in 90 cases. On a morphological level, MRI permits a new analysis of signs of dystrophy. As far as MRI is concerned, no specific sign of mammary neoplasia seems to exist. A classification is suggested, taking into account morphology and parameters of relaxation.

[Bone x-ray computed tomographic densitometry by the dual energy technic in a single rotation. Initial results].

Computed tomography is one of the most promising methods for the non-invasive measurement of the bone mass. A review of the theoretical bases of the double energy technique developed by the authors' experimental study on tubes containing defined calcium concentrations and on cadaver vertebrae, demonstrates the value of this investigation in this field. The theoretical study also reveals the limitations of the technique, in particular the decrease in the values induced by fat. The value of this new technique has been confirmed by the preliminary clinical results obtained in non-osteoporotic control women and in women with confirmed osteoporosis, which obviously need to be confirmed by larger series.

Early in vitro stimulation of endometrial (Na+-K+)-ATPase by estradiol.

Physiological concentrations of estradiol (2-10 nM) can approximately double the activity of the endometrical (Na+-K+)-ATPase in immature mammalians. This stimulation in vitro is optimum as early as 30 minutes after contact of uteri with the hormone and it is not inhibited by incubation with cycloheximide. Analogues of 17 beta estradiol have little effect on the enzyme activity, but another steroid hormone testosterone, is capable of a similar activating effect.

3D modeling in myocardial 201TL SPECT.

A method to model the left ventricular myocardium in thallium-201 Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is presented. This method is based on the fitting of the morphological skeleton of the left ventricle to a truncated bullet. This automatic approach would provide a more reproducible visualization of the organ for clinical applications.

A comparative study of Powell's and Downhill Simplex algorithms for a fast multimodal surface matching in brain imaging.

Multimodal images registration can be very helpful for diagnostic applications. However, even if a lot of registration algorithms exist, only a few really work in clinical routines. We developed a method based on surface matching and compared two minimization algorithms: Powell's and Downhill Simplex. We studied the influence of some factors (chamfer map computation, number and order of parameters to determine, minimization criteria) on the final accuracy of the algorithm. Using this comparison, we improved some processing steps to allow a clinical use, and selected the simplex algorithm which presented the best results.
