Adjuvant whole-lung radiation with or without adriamycin treatment in osteogenic sarcoma.

Eighteen consecutive patients with osteogenic sarcoma were treated after initial surgery with 2000 rads of whole-lung radiation for 21--28 days. Eleven of these patients went on to receive adriamycin (20 mg/m2 X 3 days every 6 weeks). Three of seven evaluable patients are free of disease in the radiation group (median time to recurrence, 130 days) while six of ten evaluable patients are free of disease in the radiation + adriamycin group (median time to recurrence, 310+ days). These results are similar to published experience with whole-lung radiation and adriamycin alone.

In vitro growth peculiarities of some human ovarian tumours.

The possibility of applying a short duration method of in vitro cultures for detecting malignancy of ovarian tumours with borderline lesions and with incipient malignant ones was investigated in 24 ovarian tumours. Three main types of histocultures were described in relation with the in vitro behaviour of ovarian tumours and their cytomorphology (atypic growth, mixed growth and normal one). The category of mixed type growth cultures is discussed, corresponding to ovarian tumours with histopathological borderline lesions, with incipient malignancy, as well as two cilio-epithelial cystadenomae rendered malignant with peritoneal seedings.

Atypic adenomatous hyperplasiae of the endometrium. Cytologic and histopathologic confrontations.

By cytologic and histopathologic confrontations performed in uterine curettage products, 34 atypic adenomatous hyperplasiae were comparatively analysed with 38 malignant proliferations of the endometrium. The confrontation was made with the aim of knowing the diagnosis significance of some atypic adenomatous hyperplasiae lesions, finally correlated with the diagnosis established on histerectomy pieces. The significance of anomalies and/or atypies generated by disorders occurred in the cytodifferentiation of glandular cells and of those of the covering epithelium of the endometrium are discussed as well as the value of methods for the early diagnosis of the malignant process at the level of endometrium.

[Changes in the B wave of cones and rods in diabetes mellitus induced by streptozotocin in rats].

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the electroretinophysiological effects of streptozotocin-induced diabetes in the rat. More specifically, both B wave amplitudes and implicit times generated with various intensities of light stimulation were examined in diabetic animals adapted to either scotopic or photopic conditions. Results indicate that B wave amplitudes, but not implicit times, were differentially affected by these two conditions of light adaptation: amplitudes were significantly enhanced but markedly decreased under photopic and scotopic conditions respectively. The possible functional relationships between these specific ERG changes and our previous observations of selective alterations in retinal dopaminergic systems in this animal model of diabetes are discussed.

Dysfunctional endometrium in primary and secondary sterility. An optic and electronmicroscopic study.

Endometria from women with primary and secondary sterility were morphologically, optically and ultrastructurally studied; such endometria were selected by clinical and paraclinical methods. In dysfunctional endometria the most important modification consists in the perturbation of the cyclical maturation process of the epitheliostromal components, perturbation which may take place "synergically" or it may be "dissociated", in disagreement with the theoretic day of the menstrual cycle. Such perturbations took place in varied circumstances: "out of phase", luteal deficit associated with hyper- or hypoestrogenemia, or pure luteal deficit, receptivity disorders, association with specific or unspecific inflammatory lesions, anovulatory cycle. Endometrium biopsy constitutes the best method for the diagnosis of endometrial dysfunctions, showing both the ovary's global hormonal function, and the qualities of the endometrial receptor, with the corrective of the corresponding technical processes and the compulsory knowledge of some clinical data.

Pulmonary function tests during adjuvant lung irradiation for osteogenic sarcoma.

Six patients received whole-lung irradiation at a dose of 2000 rads/4 weeks (nominal standard dose = 700 Rets) after surgery for primary osteogenic sarcoma. Pulmonary function tests performed before and 6-20 months after pulmonary irradiation failed to demonstrate any pulmonary function impairment in any of the patients studied.

Comparative study of the treatment with tetracyclic and tricyclic antidepressants in patients with minor depressive disorders.

One hundred and twenty-nine cases with depression were submitted to a comparative therapeutic study, using a flexible treatment administration: mianserin 30-60 mg and imipramine 50-150 mg. The mean dosages were 43.6 mg of mianserin and 62 mg/day of imipramine. Twenty-nine patients were excluded from the study, the rest constituting 2 equal groups of 50 cases each. The study covered a period of 4 weeks. After this period, almost 40% of the cases were discharged due to their obvious improvement. The significant benefits of mianserin were evident in the 7th and in the 21st day of the study on HDRS for the total score and in the 7th day on HDRS for the anxiety-somatization score. The superiority of mianserin was also obvious due to the total score on Lipmann-Rickels' scale as well as for the general neurotic symptoms. No statistically significant differences between mianserin and imipramine for the antidepressive efficacy were observed by the end of the study. A greater number of secondary effects was noticed in the group treated with imipramine. It seems that mianserin was a better therapy for this category of psychic patients, especially for older cases, probably due to the anxiolytic influence and to a lower incidence of side-effects.
