Polyhydramnios and hypercalcemia associated with congenital mesoblastic nephroma: case report and a new appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Polyhydramnios and hypercalcemia are known complications of congenital mesoblastic nephroma. Hypercalcemia has been shown to cause polyuria. Polyuria is believed to be the probable cause for the polyhydramnios, but the exact mechanism remains unknown. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a relationship between hypercalcemia and polyhydramnios. CASE: A 26-year-old primigravida was diagnosed with congenital mesoblastic nephroma and polyhydramnios at 36 weeks' gestation. Neonatal hypercalcemia was detected immediately after delivery at 40 weeks' gestation. After removal of the nephroma, the calcium level normalized. CONCLUSION: Hypercalcemia may be the mechanism underlying polyhydramnios in cases of congenital mesoblastic nephroma. Calcium levels should be monitored after delivery, and prompt surgical removal of the tumor should be performed.

Establishment and characterization of a new human cell line derived from ovarian clear cell carcinoma.

A new cell line, designated OCC1, was established from the ascitic fluid of a patient with a clear cell carcinoma of the ovary. The cell line grew well without interruption for over 12 months and over 80 passages. The doubling times of OCC1 were 36 and 38 hr at the 10th and 40th passages, respectively. Chromosomal analysis of the cell line showed hypertriploidy with modal number around 70-77. Several structural chromosomal abnormalities were consistently found. Electron microscopy revealed that OCC1 produced a basement membrane-like structure in vitro. Histological evaluation of xenografts from OCC1 in the 33th passage implanted and grown in nude (athymic) mice revealed a morphology identical to that of the original tumor.

The clinical significance of the serum haptoglobin concentration in patients with invasive cervical carcinoma.

The serum haptoglobin concentration was measured by rate nephalometry in 56 patients with invasive carcinoma of the cervix, and in 24 women with no evidence of cervical pathology who served as control subjects. There was a significant difference in the mean serum haptoglobin concentration (p less than 0.005) between the 2 groups of patients. However there was no significant correlation between the serum haptoglobin concentration and the clinical stage of the disease. From our data we propose that a serum haptoglobin concentration greater than 96 mg/dl is suggestive of invasive carcinoma of the cervix, and that this may be used as additional investigation in the initial assessment of such patients.

A microcomputer based interview system for antenatal clinic.

A microcomputer-based antenatal interview system, using a low cost Apple IIb computer with an on-line printer, was tested for the feasibility of application in an obstetric clinic. This simple to use interview program was written in the PASCAL language. This paper describes the development and features of this program.
