Although many investigations on the thermal expansion of dental investments have already been done, the conditions upon which thermal expansion was measured were not always definitely shown and the phenomena on thermal behavior of dental investments were not reasonably interpreted. In this investigation the effects of W/P ratio of samples, heating rate and furnace atmosphere were studied by "Push Rod" Dilatometer in order to attempt to standardise dilatometry of dental investments. All experiments were designed with two-way layout techniques. The main results were as follows, 1) W/P ratio, heating rate and furnace atmosphere have significant effects on the thermal expansion curves of the gypsum bonded investments. 2) One steep expansion and three stages of shrinkage in heating process of these investments from room temperature to about 900 degrees C were observed. 3) The quantity of the steep expansion, first and second stages of shrinkage and the expansion at 650 degrees C were affected by W/P ratio. 4) The temperature at which the steep expansion or shrinkage occurred were affected by heating rate. 5) Furnace atmosphere affected on both quantity of the steep expansion or shrinkage and their temperature. It also affected on the expansion at 650 degrees C. Then, these factors should be considered in dilatometry of gypsum bonded investments and in dental practice.
The results obtained by macro-DTA were not reproducible because they were largely influenced by the packing method, the amount of samples and many other factors related to each apparatus. The dehydration process of gypsum was investigated by micro-DTA in this study. The results were compared with those of macro-DTA studies. Two endothermic peaks were generally observed. These peaks tended to overlap with the increase of particle size. As the water vapor pressure decreased, the two peaks shifted to lower temperature and finally overlapped completely. The effect of the amount of samples was very similar to that of the atmosphere. When the amount was less than about 1 mg, only a single peak was observed. The dehydration process of gypsum was discussed on the basis of a phase diagram of the system of CaSO4-H2O. Moreover, the activation energies of the first and second dehydration reactions were calculated by Kissinger's method. The former was about 25 kcal/mol and the latter was about 24 kcal/mol. They werein good agreement with those obtained by other workers.

Effects of ifenprodil tartrate, a potent vasodilator, on the autonomic, peripheral and central nerve system were studied in experimental animals. In isolated vas deferens of guinea pigs, the contraction in response to noradrenaline and sympathetic nerve stimulation was competetively antagonized by ifenprodil 10(-7)--10(-5) M (pA2: 7.69 against noradrenaline). Ifenprodil (50 approximately 1,000 mug/kg i.v.) inhibited the contraction of cat nictitating membrane and dog urinary bladder induced by sympathetic nerve stimulation. Ifenprodil (250 approximately 1,000 mug/kg i.v.) lowered adrenaline-induced lethality (ED50: 360 mug/kg). The drug produced a hypermotility of guinea pig uterus, and showed a transient hypertonus of dog gut which was abolished by atropine. Ifenprodil (10 approximately 20 mg/kg i.v.) inhibited the propulsion of charcoal meal in mice. In Shay rats, more than 10 mg/kg i.m. of the drug inhibited the secretion of acid gastric juice and the ulceration. Ifenprodil showed a potent local anesthetic action in the guinea pig cornea and skin. The spontaneous EEG of rabbits showed a resting pattern (0.25 approximately 2 mg/kg i.v.) followed by an arousal pattern (5 approximately 10 mg/kg). Ifenprodil (20 approximately 100 mg/kg p.o.) potentiated a hypnosis induced by barbital, and potentiated pentylenetetrazol, strychnine and picrotoxin induced convulsion. The drug (20 and 100 mg/kg p.o.) lowered the body temperature of rats. From these results it is concluded that ifenprodil produces a blocking action of alpha-adrenoceptors in various smooth muscle preparations and a direct relaxation of the smooth muscle itself without affecting the motor and central nerve systems.

The precipitation hardening process of a dental silver base alloy, Ag-28 Pd-10 Cu-12 wt % Au, was studied by means of X-ray diffraction, hardness measurement and metallographic observations. After solution treatment at 900 degrees C for 30 min, specimens were subjected to anisothermal annealing at the rate of 1 degrees C/min. PdCu ordered phase and alpha2 solid solution (Ag rich phase) precipitated hetelogeneously at the grain boundaries and then grew up into each grain. Drastic increase in hardness was recognized with the spread of nodular region. Electron microscopic observation of these precipitates showed very fine lamellar structure. It is concluded that the age hardening of this alloy could be attributed to this grain boundary precipitation and the softening at the overaged stage to the second grain boundary reaction which produced very coarse lamellar structure.
