From karyometrical measurements performed by us and from investigations of other authors it results that the obtained values of nuclear volumes are smaller than real ones. This is caused by different sectioning planes of measured nuclei. Previously published corrections seem not to reflect the real error as they are based on the analysis of the circle, and not of the sphere. In the presented paper a method is given, which may be applicated to interpretation of the results of morphometrical measurements. The proposed method is based on the well known in statistical analysis 3o rule. The obtained results were applicated to a practical example.

After the outbreak of an endemy of HCV infections in the paediatric haematology and oncology wards, epidemiological analysis was performed for cancer children, health-care workers and controls. The study included a total of 639 persons, divided into four groups. The results were as follows: 1) The number of infected paediatric cancer patients was 100/237 (42.4%). 2) Of the 44 health-care workers in the haemato-oncology ward none was infected with HCV. 3) In the other parts of the hospital, five out of 258 (1.9%) permanently employed staff at risk of occupational exposure to blood and other body fluids were infected with HCV; however, the infection rate included only nurses (5/125, i.e. 4%). 4) One hundred adults consecutively tested for anti-HCV antibodies before a planned surgical procedure were not infected with HCV (control group). This study shows that complex nonspecific prophylaxis and full awareness in everyday work has helped to prevent transmission of HCV from highly contagious patients to medical personnel, particularly to nurses who have the highest occupational risk.
Described is a case of a boy with congenital acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with pre-pre-B-ALL immunophenotype, presenting as diarrhea, organomegaly, hyperleucocytosis of 1434 G/L, and tumor lysis syndrome. The lymphoblasts showed low proliferative activity and high in vitro drug sensitivity measured by the MTT assay. An excellent response to therapy was observed, but relapse ocurred 3 months later. On relapse, blasts showed extremely high drug resistance, high expression of P-glycoprotein, and high proliferative activity. The response to therapy was again positive, but a second relapse occurred in 1 month. The MTT assay indicated increasing drug resistance to all drugs. Cytogenetic analysis revealed deletion in 11q23 locus. This unfavorable case shows complex biology and differential drug resistance in congenital leukemia.
