Epileptic laughter with precocious puberty.

A child with associated epileptic laughter and precocious puberty is reported. The significance of epileptic laughter as a possible marker of hypothalamic disease is noted.

Protein phosphorylation in a dopamine-sensitive homogenate of rat caudate. Effect of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate and putative neurotransmitters.

Adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and its 8-methylthio derivative stimulate the incorporation of 32P into proteins endogenous to a homogenate of rat caudate nucleus when 4 micrometer [gamma-32P] ATP is used as substrate. Higher concentrations of ATP reduced the effect of the cyclic nucleotide until at 400 micrometer no significant increase in protein phosphorylation was seen. Incubation of the homogenate with 400 micron ATP and 100 micron dopamine resulted in an approx. 2-fold increase in cyclic AMP but did not alter caudate protein phosphorylation suggesting that the catecholamine could not stimulate protein phosphorylation under the experimental conditions used in the present study.

Dihydrofolate reductase: x-ray structure of the binary complex with methotrexate.

A central eight-stranded beta-pleated sheet is the main feature of the polypeptide backbone folding in dihydrofolate reductase. The innermost four strands and two bridging helices are geometrically similar to but are connected in a different way from those in the dinucleotide binding domains found in nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide-linked dehydrogenases. Methotrexate is bound in a 15-angstrom-deep cavity with the pteridine ring buried in a primarily hydrophobic pocket, although a strong interaction occurs between the side chain of aspartic acid 27 and N(1), N(8), and the 2-amino group of methotrexate.

The functional independence of response latency and accuracy: implications for the concept of conceptual tempo.

Kagan (1965a) developed the concepts of impulsive and reflective cognitive styles (conceptual tempo) to add a new dimension to the understanding and assessment of human intelligence. Although latency (the principal component of conceptual tempo) is negatively correlated with academic performance, it may not be necessary to modify latency in order to modify accuracy.. With 40 disadvantaged preschool children, it was found that reinforcing long latencies in choice tasks did not increase accuracy and vice versa, and that reinforcing both long latencies and accuracy was no more effective than reinforcing accuracy alone. These data were used to question the usefulness of the construct of conceptual tempo.

Handwriting characteristics and their relationship to Eysenck's extraversion-introversion and Kagan's impulsivity-reflectivity dimensions.

Examined the relationship between certain handwriting characteristics and Eysenck's Extraversion-Introversion and Kagan's Impulsivity-Reflectivity personality dimensions. Using 46 female subjects, scores on the EPQ inventory and Matching Familiar Figures test were compared by factor analysis to the handwriting characteristics of: middle zone height; middle zone breadth; upper zone height; lower zone height; space between words; right margin breadth; left margin breadth; a general size measure; handwriting time; paragraph indention; slant. The factor analysis revealed three distinct writing styles: one related to Extraversion; another related to Introversion; and a final one related to Reflectivity. These findings were discussed in relation to statements made by graphologists. Also, the significance of trait-sign and factor analysis in comparison with other methods of graphoanalysis was discussed.

A two-phased model for library instruction.

This article describes two methods of library orientation and instruction: self-paced audiotapes and computer-assisted instruction (CAI). The tapes are used to orient the user to the libraries' physical facilities, policies, services, and tools, while CAI is used to provide detailed library information in an interactive mode.
